Shastri tears into Indian bowling unit for 'rubbish' display, expects 'harsh words' from Gambhir and Morkel after Day 2

Ravi Shastri blasted the Indian bowling unit for their 'rubbish display' on Thursday that allowed England to seize control on Day 2 of the fourth Test at the Old Trafford in Manchester. The Cricketer-turned-commentator also expected head coach Gautam Gambhir as well as bowling coach Morne Morkel to have some 'harsh words' with the bowlers after the day's play, which saw the after bowling India out for 358.

'Just not consistent enough.They will look back at this session and see, especially some of the boundary deliveries, that it's pretty ordinary stuff, at times rubbish,' Shastri said on air, referring to the afternoon session in which they were smashed for 77 runs in 14 overs by English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.
Wouldn't hold back if I still were coach, says Shastri
Shastri added that he would react in a similar manner, perhaps 'in better terms' if he still was the head coach.
'Absolutely, maybe in better terms. Maybe get the local lingo in there, which can sound harsher. Some harsh words will be exchanged by the coach and the bowling coach,' he added.
Crawley (84) and Duckett (94) would go on to bring up their half-centuries and add 166 for the opening wicket – the second-highest in the ongoing series after their 188-run stand at Headingley that laid the foundation for their successful chase of 371.
It wasn't until Ravindra Jadeja got rid of Crawley right after the drinks interval in the evening session that the opening partnership was finally broken. Debutant Anshul Kamboj would grab his maiden international wicket shortly after by having Duckett caught-behind, denying the southpaw a century.
Despite losing a couple of wickets towards the end of the day's play, England remained firmly in control and are poised to collect a sizeable first innings lead on the 'Moving Day'.
Though Jadeja (1/37) and Kamboj (1/48) were the only Indians to take a wicket on Day 2, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (13-4-37-0) stood out once again with his economy of 2.84 – the only Indian with an economy under 4.

Senior pacer Mohammed Siraj finished wicketless for 58 runs in 10 overs while all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who returned to the XI for the first time since the series opener at Headingley, was hit for 35 runs in five wicketless overs at an economy of 7.

Xavi Hernandez and Pep Guardiola's applications were not genuine: AIFF
A day after its top official claimed that World Cup-winning Spanish great Xavi Hernandez was among the applicants for India football coach's position, the All India Football Federation said that the e-mail received in his name was found to be "not genuine" and three others have been short-listed for the job. The AIFF did not reveal the names in the pruned list but it is widely believed that Khalid Jamil, currently the head coach of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, is the front-runner for the post left vacant by Spaniard Manolo Marquez. "The AIFF received an e-mail furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the e-mail applications were not genuine," AIFF stated in a media release. One of its officials, on conditions of anonymity, had stated on Friday that the application of Xavi could not be processed as the AIFF did not have resources to hire his services. The IM Vijayan-headed Technical Committee, it is learnt, has also kept Englishman Stephen Constantine, who has previously coached India, and Slovakia's Stefan Tarkovic in the short-list. Constantine has coached the Indian team in two phases earlier, while Tarkovic is the most decorated among the shortlisted candidates having managed Slovakia during the 2020 Euro Championship, where his team beat a fancied Poland which had Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski in its ranks. "Following comprehensive discussions and a rigorous selection process, 10 candidates were selected for the committee to review, following which, the TC shortlisted three," the release also stated. "Given the immediate needs of the national team, it is advisable to recommend three coaches from the short-listed pool for final consideration," former India skipper Vijayan was quoted as saying in the release. "Other prominent applicants, many of whom are highly qualified international coaches, will be taken into account for long-term strategic roles in the future," he added. National Team Director Subrata Paul, also a former India skipper, spoke about preference being given to those with some understanding of Indian football. "It is a very important moment for Indian football, and we are committed to appointing a coach who not only brings technical expertise but also understands the unique style, culture, and dynamics of Indian and Asian football. "We believe such a coach will be able to connect with our players quickly and effectively," Paul stated.

CC Sabathia and his family have a bumpy ride to Cooperstown
COOPERSTOWN, NY (AP) — For CC Sabathia, getting elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame was much easier than actually getting to the Hall of Fame. HT Image Sabathia, whose career spanned 19 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees, was voted in on his first year of eligibility. Getting to Cooperstown for Hall of Fame weekend activities to be capped by his induction Sunday proved a tad more difficult. 'It was an adventure,' Sabathia said Saturday. Sabathia, wife Amber and their four children left their Alpine, New Jersey, home at about 4 p.m. Thursday. They traveled in two vehicles as is their family custom and were about 75 miles (120 kilometers) into their 177-mile trip when things got interesting. 'We stopped to get food. Everything's going great,' Sabathia said. 'We tried to get on the on-ramp on (Route) 17 and the car just stopped. I was behind her (Amber). Most of the time when we're driving, I'm gone. I'm never driving behind her, but for some reason I was taking my time riding behind her.' Sabathia had a clear view of what was happening. They called for assistance. The family piled into Sabathia's car and returned home to grab another vehicle as a tow truck towed their broken-down Escalade back to Alpine. The Sabathias arrived in Cooperstown at about midnight. What should have been a drive of about three hours became an eight-hour journey. 'It was pretty funny. I was taking pictures. My kids were doing TikToks and Amber was in the back like the super serious person she is getting everything done,' Sabathia said. 'People were honking at us and recognizing us on the side of the road. It was fun for us. 'For her it was a nightmare.'
