The Shocking Truth About Eating Ultra-Processed Foods And Your Lifespan, According To A New Study
A new study suggests that eating lots of ultra-processed foods can increase risk of death up to 10 percent.
The findings were based on more than 540,000 American adults who tracked their diets for nearly 30 years.

Whether you're grabbing a quick deli meat sandwich from the grocery store or sipping on a soda for an afternoon pick-me-up, there's a solid chance you'll encounter several ultra-processed foods (UPFs) as you go about your day. But while UPFs are certainly delicious and convenient, research consistently suggests that consuming a lot of these foods in your diet isn't great for your health.
In fact, a new study hammers that finding home. The findings suggest that having a diet that's heavy in UPFs could actually shorten your lifespan. These foods make up about 70 percent of our food supply, making it very tricky to avoid them entirely. But the study's findings definitely provide a little extra motivation if you're looking to cut back and find. Here's everything to know about the new data and what it could mean for you.

For the study, which was published in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers followed more than 540,000 American adults between the ages of 50 and 71, and tracked their diets for nearly 30 years. More than half of the people in the study, which started in the mid-1990s, have since died. The researchers looked at the death rates of people who ate the most UPFs and those who ate the least, and also drilled down on the types of UPFs they ate.
The researchers discovered that having a diet heavy in UPFs was linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and colorectal cancer, along with about a 10 percent higher risk of early death. Processed meat (think: deli meat and hot dogs) was linked to an 11 percent increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 7 percent higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. Sugar-sweetened beverages like sodas led to an 8 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes and a 2 percent higher risk of heart disease.
The researchers stressed that more research is needed, but say the findings only add to the growing recommendations that people cut back on their ultra-processed food intake.
The level of processing that food undergoes before it ends up on our table is classified by a system known as the NOVA scale. This breaks foods into four categories, explains Jessica Cording, RD, CDN, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers:
Unprocessed and minimally processed foods: Foods that fall into this group are in their natural state or barely altered, Cording says. That includes things like strawberries, avocados, and milk.
Processed culinary ingredients: Foods in this camp are minimally processed through steps like pressing, refining, grinding, or milling. Almond flour and olive oil are processed culinary ingredients, Cording explains.
Processed foods: Foods that are considered processed have been changed from their natural state and often contain salt, oil, and sugar. That includes some cheeses and canned fish, per Cording.
Ultra-processed foods: These foods are processed, but take it another step by also including ingredients like artificial colors and flavors, along with preservatives for shelf stability, and ingredients to preserve texture. Packaged foods usually fall into this group.
There are several things that could be at play here. For starters, UPFs are linked with a higher risk of developing serious health issues like heart disease and colorectal cancer, and having those conditions raises your risk of early death.
It's likely related to inflammation, says Keri Gans, RDN, author of The Small Change Diet. 'Diets rich in ultra-processed foods may cause inflammation in the body, which over time may increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and other serious health issues that can reduce your lifespan,' she says.
There are a few reasons why these foods aren't great for your heart. 'Ultra-processed foods are often high in added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium, which may increase blood pressure, LDL ('bad') cholesterol, and inflammation, all key risk factors for heart disease,' Gans says.
But eating a lot of UPFs also means that you're likely crowding out healthier choices, Cording points out. 'If someone is eating a lot of ultra-processed foods that don't offer much in the way of important vitamins and minerals, and over-consuming sugar, preservatives, and empty calories, it can set someone up for adverse health issues,' she says.
This food category is quite broad and includes things like bars and protein powders, along with stuff people typically think of, like hot dogs and sodas. While dietitians stress that whole foods are best, Cording says you don't need to freak if you grab the odd bar to tide you over until dinner. 'It's really the overall diet pattern that matters,' she says.
Still, if you'd prefer to cut out or cut down on UPFs in your life, Gans recommends filling your plate with whole foods first. 'Focus on eating more whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and lean proteins, which naturally leave less room for ultra-processed ones,' she says. Reading ingredients lists is also helpful, Gans adds. 'Look for lengthy lists that include added sugars, saturated fats, and excessive sodium,' she suggests.
The experts also know that it's difficult to be perfect here. 'You don't have to cut everything out, but being mindful helps,' she says.

HHS abruptly cancels preventive services task force meeting
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has abruptly postponed a meeting of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force originally scheduled for Thursday, according to an email sent to members of the public who had planned on attending. 'The Immediate Office of the Secretary is postponing the July USPSTF meeting. Moving forward, HHS looks forward to engaging with the Task Force to promote the health and well-being of the American people,' the email stated. An HHS spokesman confirmed the cancellation but did not provide a reasoning. The cancellation comes on the heels of a Supreme Court decision last month that asserted Kennedy has power to hire and fire members of the task force at will, and to review and potentially delay or veto the recommendations they issue — something that no prior administration has ever done. The task force is composed of medical experts who serve four-year terms on a volunteer basis. They are appointed by the HHS secretary and are supposed to be shielded from political influence. Congress designed the task force to be 'independent and, to the extent practicable, not subject to political pressure.' Task force members meet three times a year, in March, July and November. ObamaCare requires insurers cover services the task force recommends with a 'grade' of A or B, such as cancer screenings and HIV-prevention drugs. The sudden cancellation of the meeting raised alarms among public health experts, who fear Kennedy could meddle with the task force's composition or fire its members, like he did with a vaccine advisory panel last month. AcademyHealth, a nonpartisan group representing health researchers, sent a letter to congressional health leaders Wednesday urging them to protect the integrity of the USPSTF 'from intentional or unintentional political interference.' 'The loss of trustworthiness in the rigorous and nonpartisan work of the Task Force would devastate patients, hospital systems, and payers as misinformation creates barriers to accessing lifesaving and cost effective care,' the group wrote.

How to power the AI economy while supporting local communities
American leadership in artificial intelligence promises massive economic opportunities and transformation across industries: AI systems are poised to drive breakthroughs in drug discovery, enable critical infrastructure, and revolutionize sectors from healthcare to finance. To drive these shifts, AI needs a massive amount of energy. By 2028, AI data centers are expected to account for 12 percent of nationwide electricity demand. Data centers' median size will more than double over the next decade, according to a survey of US data center operators from power provider Bloom Energy. Some will require more than a gigawatt of power – enough for over 800,000 average American homes. Many Americans are concerned about how AI's hunger for energy will impact them. Communities around the country are pushing back against the building of new data centers nearby, despite their potential to create jobs and boost local economies. Chief among communities' concerns are rising energy costs and how new data centers could drive them up further. Growing pressure on the grid also increases the risk of power outages, and communities are alarmed about data centers' potential pollution, noise, and water and land use. Powering the AI economy without local communities bearing the brunt of higher energy bills, power outages, and pollution is a challenge, to be sure. But specific types of onsite power can create a 'yes, and' to fuel AI's growth and support communities. Onsite power means physically producing electricity at the location where it's used. For example, fuel cells are a type of onsite power that convert natural gas, hydrogen, or biogas into electricity without using combustion. Other power sources that data centers can deploy onsite include natural gas engines and turbines. When data centers use certain kinds of onsite power, it creates several advantages for both local communities and AI's growth. Lower impact on consumer energy costs. Some facilities use onsite power to go 'off-grid,' meaning they don't connect to the electricity grid – and therefore that their energy costs don't affect local residents' utility bills. Others use onsite power as a primary source while maintaining a connection to the grid. Utilities can also work directly with onsite power providers to produce energy for data centers in their service areas and 'fence off' that coverage, preventing data centers' costs from being passed on to consumers. Approaches like these help keep consumer utility bills stable while providing reliable power for data centers to fuel AI. Less pollution. Some onsite power technologies like fuel cells produce significantly lower emissions than traditional energy sources because they don't use combustion. Fuel cells also reduce smog-forming local air pollution by more than 99% compared to traditional energy generation technologies, and use a tiny fraction of the water that legacy combustion generators need. Smaller footprint. High power density—producing relatively large amounts of power in a given space—is a major benefit of some onsite power sources. Gas turbines and reciprocating engines provide up to 50 megawatts of power per acre, while fuel cells can deliver double that – up to 100 megawatts on less than an acre. This small footprint can help ease communities' concerns about data centers' visual impacts and the loss of open space. Quieter. Excess noise is a significant concern among many communities near data centers. Onsite power sources like fuel cells are much quieter than other energy sources, operating at ~70 dBA – about the sound level of a normal conversation. Interest is rising in onsite power generation for data centers: by 2030, nearly 40% expect to use some onsite power and 27% say it will provide all of their electricity. This will help data centers deliver on their promised local economic benefits—and AI's broad transformative potential—without the adverse effects of higher energy costs, power outages, and more pollution and noise in American communities.
