The Vietnamese fishing boat caught for illegal trawling of sea cucumbers in Kudat waters.
KUDAT (July 22): A Vietnamese fishing vessel was detained for attempting to ram into a patrol vessel of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kudat waters on Monday.
MMEA Kudat director Maritime Commander Hasbullah Omar said the foreign boat was detected 1.22 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Bukit Pulau Malawali in Kudat at around 4am on July 21.
'As MMEA personnel approached, the suspects immediately fled the area. They also installed iron bars on the left and right sides of the boat to prevent MMEA from approaching.
'The suspects also tried to ram into MMEA patrol boat in their bid to escape,' said Hasbullah in a statement on Tuesday.
A 15-minute chase ended when MMEA personnel jumped onto the boat.
After a search, the boat was found conducting illegal trawling of sea cucumbers or gamat.
'About 40 kilograms of sea cucumbers and 300 litres of diesel oil were discovered on the boat.
'Five Vietnamese, aged between 28 and 39, were detained for not having any valid identification documents,' said Hasbullah.
The suspects together with the seafood and the boat, worth more than RM2 million, were escorted back to the Kudat MMEA jetty for further action.
The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1956/63.
Hasbullah thanked the public for their continuous cooperation with the agency to combat illegal activities in Kudat waters.

KOTA KINABALU (July 24): A businessman pleaded not guilty in a Sessions Court here today to three charges of cheating in connection with the acquisition of an honorary 'Dato'' title. Datuk Ling How Ee, 40, entered his plea before judge Jason Juga, who had the charges read to him in Mandarin. Ling is accused of dishonestly inducing a man to transfer RM2,500, RM500, and RM3,000 into his bank account for the purported purchase of gold accessories for ceremonial attire, and to assist in securing a 'Dato'' title from Pahang, despite having no authority to do so. The alleged offences took place at a bank branch here on April 19, April 20 and May 17, 2023. All the charges fall under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of imprisonment between one and ten years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. The court set September 3 for pre-trial case management. Ling was granted bail of RM10,000 with a RM3,000 deposit and one local surety. Additional conditions imposed included reporting to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) once every two months, surrendering his passport to the court (if any), and refraining from contacting or interfering with prosecution witnesses. He was represented by counsel Ngui Kuang Kee @ George Ngui. Ling was arrested on July 2 after giving a statement at the Sabah MACC Office.

MELAKA: A former soldier claimed trial at a Magistrate's Court in Ayer Keroh here to a charge of allegedly assaulting his father. The accused, Mohd Salihudin Hasan, 35, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman on Thursday(July 24). According to the charge, Mohd Salihudin is accused of intentionally causing injury to his 64-year-old father, Hasan Jaffar, at about 10pm on July 18, outside their family home in Taman Peruna in Sungai Udang, here The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, whhich carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. It is understood that the incident stemmed from a family disagreement involving Mohd Salihudin and his younger sibling. The father had attempted to mediate and urged both children to mend their strained relationship by asking Mohd Salihudin to reconcile with his sibling. However, Mohd Salihudin allegedly became enraged after being reprimanded by his father and allegedly responded by slapping him. Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Nabihah Sofian proposed to the court to set the bail at RM8,000. Mohd Salihudin, who was unrepresented, told the court that he is self-employed and had no one present to post bail on his behalf. The court later granted a bail of RM4,000, with an additional condition that the accused must not disturb the victim. However, at press time Mohd Salihudin has failed to post the bail. The court also fixed the mention date for Sept 2.

KUCHING (July 24): A 42-year-old insurance company manager claimed trial in the Magistrates' Court here today to a charge of using as genuine a forged document three years ago. Ling Swee Loi entered the plea before Magistrate Heng Yi Min after being charged under Section 471 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 465 of the same Code. The Section provides for up to two years in prison, or with a fine, or both upon conviction. According to Section 417 of the Penal Code, whoever fraudulently or dishonestly uses as genuine any document which he knows or has reason to believe to be a forged document, shall be punished in the same manner as if he had forged such document. Heng granted Ling bail of RM2,500 with one local surety and fixed Aug 27, 2025 for the next hearing. According to the charge, Ling is accused of dishonestly using a forged Life Insurance Proposal Form (regular premium) under the name of a 41-year-old man as a genuine document, which also contained his forged signature. The alleged offence took place at a premises in Lorong Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce 12 here around 4.17pm on June 15, 2022. Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while Ling was represented by counsels Tiong Ing Neng and Alex Kong. *An earlier version of this report has been amended*
