
Kia K4 Hatch to debut more efficient engine in Australia

small car range is set to grow in Australia during the fourth quarter of 2025, and the Korean brand's local product boss has confirmed it will include the debut of a new, more efficient petrol engine option Down Under.
Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the updated
Sportage
mid-size range, Kia Australia's general manager for product planning Roland Rivero wouldn't be drawn on the local prospects for the
K4 Hybrid
(HEV), which is yet to be revealed, but he did confirm a more efficient drivetrain is coming to the core K4 lineup.
'We've got [the] hatchback first – the K4 Hatch. That does adopt a new powertrain which you're familiar with from the Seltos… which helps us out from a CO2 perspective – that will be our first adjustment in light of NVES [the federal government's New vehicle Efficiency Standard],' Mr Rivero said.

The powertrain in question is the Atkinson-cycle 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with what Hyundai and Kia call an 'IVT' or Intelligent Variable Transmission. Effectively, it's Hyundai/Kia-speak for a CVT.
As Mr Rivero mentioned, this drivetrain is already on sale locally in the
Seltos
small SUV, and also serves in the related
Hyundai i30 Sedan
and
Kona
crossover.
Due to its more efficient Atkinson cycle, the new engine makes slightly less grunt than the existing 2.0-litre 'MPI' engine (110kW/180Nm versus 112kW/192Nm) but is claimed to be more fuel-efficient, helped in part by the different transmission.
'The CO2 on that is better than even the 1.6 turbo – I think it's about a 30g/km improvement [over the 2.0L MPI]. Whether we spec it with [idle stop/start] is TBC,' Mr Rivero added.
The current 2.0L MPI engine with a six-speed automatic in the K4 Sedan quotes combined fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km and CO2 emissions of 167g/km, while the more powerful 1.6 T-GDI engine in the GT-Line with its eight-speed auto quotes 6.7L/100km and 158g/km.
For reference, the related Hyundai i30 Sedan with the Smartstream-branded Atkinson-cycle engine and CVT quotes a much thriftier 6.1L/100km and 139g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle.
Mr Rivero said the new drivetrain will be applied to both the upcoming K4 Hatch as well as the existing K4 Sedan during the fourth quarter of 2025, likely coinciding with model year 2026 (MY26) production.
As yet there's still no word on a K4 Hybrid or HEV variant, which has been all but confirmed for a future introduction. It will almost certainly draw upon the 1.6-litre hybrid system used in the i30 Sedan and Kona hybrids, which makes 104kW and 265Nm.
Since launching earlier this year, the Kia K4 has managed 1892 registrations to the end of May. By comparison, its top-selling predecessor, the Cerato, managed 6323 registrations during the January-May 2024 period. But last month, the new sedan-only K4 outsold the outgoing Cerato hatch and sedan with 577 sales versus just 68, which was nevertheless short of segment leaders including the Toyota Corolla (1576), Hyundai i30 (909) and Mazda 3 (735).
However, the K4 currently lacks an ANCAP safety rating, which is a requirement for many of the large fleet customers that account for a large proportion of small car sales across the industry, so the addition of a more popular hatchback body style and an independent safety rating should give the K4 a significant shot in the arm.
'It's taken a few months… but now [the K4] is starting to build momentum. Once it gets its ANCAP rating, it will open the door to fleets,' said Dean Norbiato, general manager for marketing at Kia Australia.
'Then we get the hatchback. We are a hatch-biased market, so when that comes at the back end of the year we're really confident in that product taking over a really important model in the Cerato, and that hatch in particular will definitely meet the demand and appetite of the Australian market as well.'

However, it is flanked by a set of more basic gauges, and while the screen sizes make it feel at least a bit more modern than its predecessor, by class standards it's already out of date. It might officially be a larger (small, rather than light) SUV, but for not that much more money the new MG ZS Hybrid+, for example, has twin 12.3-inch screens across the range. Even so, the useability and controls on offer in the Toyota are good, with a volume dial to make quick adjustments, and there are standard climate controls down below with buttons – far simpler than diving through menus on a screen. And maybe that's the best way to think of the cabin – simple, but effective. The finishes are fine, but nothing special. There's cloth seat trim in the GXL, hard plastics across the dash, and a microfibre trim on the front doors, while rear seat occupants just get hard plastic finishes – great if you have grubby kids, but less good for adult elbows. Rear seat space is more generous than you might expect of a sub-4.2m SUV. At 182cm/6'1', I could fit behind my own driving position with my knees just brushing the seat ahead, but with good foot space and enough head and shoulder space to feel comfortable… but there was no-one next to me. Three across will be VERY tight, but you can fit two adults in the back with ease, or two child seats if you need to. There are outboard ISOFIX child seat anchor points and three top-tethers, and while the middle seat doesn't have a flip-down armrest, it does fold down completely to access a ski-port load-through space, and there are cupholders there, too. 2025 Toyota Yaris Cross Credit: CarExpert Otherwise, it's a bit bare in the second row, with just one map pocket on the front passenger's seat-back, and bottle holders in the doors. There are no air-vents, and no USB charge ports, either. The biggest annoyance with the second-row, though, is that the doors don't open very far. Lifting a kiddo in is painful, especially if you're an awkward unit, and you almost feel like you're going to rip the door clean off when you try and open it with too much gusto. Boot space is quite good in the Yaris Cross, with 390 litres of cargo capacity in the front-wheel drive versions, but that shrinks to just 314 litres in AWD models, because of the revised rear suspension design. There are a couple of shopping bag hooks and a light in the back, too. It's probably exacerbated by the fact it's a hybrid, and the electric motor can take care of momentum at times – meaning that, in essence, it can be close to silent before the petrol engine makes quite the racket when it gets up and running. And it'll be even more vocal if you drive in B mode, rather than D. That mode is designed to maximise battery regeneration, and it will make the engine more actively work as a generator to fill up the battery to make EV driving more doable. The downside, yes, is that it vibrates notably and may also make you think there's something wrong with the car, if you're not familiar with how it all works. 2025 Toyota Yaris Cross Credit: CarExpert But it's not just the engine that's loud – it's generally a very noisy experience, with loads of road noise entering on rougher surfaces, and noticeable intrusion from outside elements like other cars, trucks, buses and even cicadas. Drive it in the rain, and you might be surprised how clearly you can hear the weather inside the cabin. But noisy stuff aside, it's a bloody good thing to drive. The steering is accurate and has some liveliness to it, with predictable responses at parking pace or when you're threading through traffic on the freeway. Ride comfort and body control are also very good. It has a slightly sharp edge to the suspension at times, but it feels assured and confident – bigger than its diminutive dimensions suggest, in fact. 2025 Toyota Yaris Cross Credit: CarExpert And the braking response is also excellent. It doesn't suffer from a lack of feel despite the regenerative braking system, and pulls up quickly and confidently. There is also a big plus in terms of safety technology integration. Unlike some of the other models in this class, it doesn't get on your nerves in terms of the tech. There is a speed sign recognition system, but it doesn't chime at you, and the lane-keeping technology is pretty well measured, too. While the powertrain is a vocal one, it's pretty smooth in the way it switches between EV and petrol modes, and if you really need to get on the move, it hustles along quicker than you'd expect. Really, it'll come down to whether you can handle the noise, vibration and harshness of the drive experience or not. Revealed: The car type that lies most about fuel consumption
New data has exposed a startling truth about fuel consumption claims among popular vehicles in Australia. The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) has released results from its Real-World Testing Program, a $14 million government-funded scheme that examines models for their fuel consumption and emissions standards. New vehicle testing by the nation's peak motoring body has shown consumers cannot rely on the fuel consumption and emissions information provided at the point of sale. Many cars use more fuel than manufacturers claim. MORE: The hybrid delivering more for less Of the latest 30 cars tested, 25 consumed more fuel than advertised. Among these vehicles, 11 cars were found to consume 10 per cent or more fuel than advertised. Interestingly, hybrids exhibited the most significant discrepancy in fuel efficiency, consuming more than laboratory results. The Hyundai Kona Hybrid showed the highest discrepancy, consuming 33 per cent more fuel on the road than its advertised laboratory figure. Hyundai Kona Hybrid. Following closely was the Kia Stonic, which recorded a fuel consumption that was 26 per cent higher than advertised, and the Hyundai i30 Hybrid, which showed a result that was 17 per cent more fuel-efficient than its lab results, indicating a discrepancy between real-world consumption and lab results. AAA Managing Director Michael Bradley says the latest findings have revealed a concerning trend that indicates a widespread issue in the industry. 'It's becoming clear that carmakers continue to optimise their vehicles' performance for lab testing, meaning new cars are too often overstating their improvements in fuel use and environmental performance,' Michael said. 'Some vehicles perform as advertised, but most do not, and our Program is seeking to reward carmakers that deliver genuine financial and environmental savings.' Video clips and images published by MG on Chinese social media have shown off a minimalist interior in a shade of beige, featuring a large and free-standing, landscape-oriented touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. A single row of buttons sits below the touchscreen, while in China at least it'll offer MG's new 'cockpit system', which was developed with smartphone brand Oppo but also supports Huawei and Apple devices, allowing voice-activated commands, gesture-based navigation and smartphone mirroring. There's still much that is not known about the vehicle, though MG Motor Australia confirmed earlier this year that it is based on a different platform to the rear/all-wheel drive Modular Scalable Platform that underpins the existing MG 4 and new MG S5 EV small electric SUV. A Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing, shared by Car News China, revealed the new MG 4 measures 4395mm long, 1842mm wide and 1551mm tall on a 2750mm wheelbase. That makes it 108mm longer, 6mm wider and up to 47mm taller than the current MG 4, on a 45mm longer wheelbase. Technical specifications in the filing are reportedly limited, though a single electric powertrain comprising a 120kW electric motor is listed, along with a kerb weight of 1485kg. The new hatch uses a 70kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Despite featuring a front bumper and tail-lights inspired by the flagship Cyberster electric sports car, the new hatch is much more softly styled than the existing MG 4 that's no longer offered in China but remains popular in markets such as Australia and Europe. The softer styling is complemented by new pastel green and purple exterior finishes, though MG has also shown off a bright red MG 4 on Weibo with black stripes. The current MG 4 may not have been a hit in China, but in the first half of 2025 it was Australia's fifth best-selling EV. That makes it 108mm longer, 6mm wider and up to 47mm taller than the current MG 4, on a 45mm longer wheelbase. Technical specifications in the filing are reportedly limited, though a single electric powertrain comprising a 120kW electric motor is listed, along with a kerb weight of 1485kg. The new hatch uses a 70kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Despite featuring a front bumper and tail-lights inspired by the flagship Cyberster electric sports car, the new hatch is much more softly styled than the existing MG 4 that's no longer offered in China but remains popular in markets such as Australia and Europe. The softer styling is complemented by new pastel green and purple exterior finishes, though MG has also shown off a bright red MG 4 on Weibo with black stripes. The current MG 4 may not have been a hit in China, but in the first half of 2025 it was Australia's fifth best-selling EV. MG delivered 2268 examples, making it more popular than the Dolphin (1337) despite a sales drop of 18.2 per cent from the same period last year.
