Rangers fans know me as a flop but I helped negotiate Erling Haaland's blockbuster transfer to Manchester City
Egil Ostenstad played a pivotal role in one of the most high-profile transfers in recent history when he helped bring superstar Erling Haaland to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022.
But to fans of a certain age, the former Norwegian forward will forever be remembered for flopping at Rangers in the 2003/04 season.
Ostenstad was brought to Ibrox by Alex McLeish on a free transfer from Blackburn and despite scoring just two goals across the previous three years, notably appeared for his country at the 1998 World Cup in France.
But his stint in the blue half of Glasgow proved to be nothing short of a disaster, with a return of just two goals in 17 matches - both of which came in League Cup ties against Forfar and St Johnstone - failing to justify his reported salary of £20,000 a week.
The ex-Viking attacker had his contract in Govan ripped up before the campaign - which finished trophyless for Gers - had even drawn to a close and after a decent second spell with Viking, hung up his boots in 2005 to become club's director of football until 2011.
But through his close friendship with former Norway and Man City teammate Alf-Inge Haaland - Ostenstad then began to represent the family's financial interests, also heading his pal's investment firm Tyrannus, which is based in Luxembourg.
After helping negotiate Haaland Jr's moves from Molde to Salzburg in 2020 and then to Dortmund six months later, they hit the jackpot when Pep Guardiola's Etihad giants forked out £51million to bring him to the Premier League.
But in an interview with FourFourTwo last month, the 53-year-old was asked about his ill-fated stint at Ibrox, and replied: "It came up late in the transfer window.
"I had 10 months left on my contract at Blackburn and Rangers are a massive club. I had an opportunity to play in the Champions League with them, so I took it, but they signed me more as a squad player.
"I didn't do well. I was struggling with an Achilles problem and couldn't train properly. I'm grateful that I got to experience being at such a huge club. I would've loved to do better.
"I did my best, but it wasn't enough at the time. It's hard as a Rangers player when Celtic are performing better."

'Jamie is an excellent player who has brought us great joy. It was his wish to take the next step in his career at Chelsea, and we wish him all the very best and much success.' Gittens made 76 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund, scoring 12 goals, and also played in their Champions League campaigns. Chelsea have already spent heavily in the summer window, with Joao Pedro coming in from Brighton on a reported £60m transfer after England under-21 international Liam Delap had been signed from Ipswich.

As Newcastle edge closer to securing a big-money deal for Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga, hands will be rubbing together at Manchester United. The Sweden international has been impressive since joining Forest from the Red Devils and was a big part of their surprisingly good campaign last time round. Elanga certainly appears close to a move to St James' Park and a crack at Champions League football with Newcastle next season. Manchester United will not be playing Champions League football, but they will be making some money out of any Elanga transfer. When Manchester United sold the 23-year-old to Forest in 2023 for £15m, they inserted a sell-on clause which will see the Red Devils owed a reported 15 per cent of any profit. That would mean the Red Devils receiving 15 per cent of £40m, which clocks in at £6m. Elanga played in all 38 of Nottingham Forest's Premier League games last season as they finished seventh in the top flight. He scored six goals and provided an impressive 11 assists, up from five goals and nine assists in the previous campaign. His 11 assists over last season was only bettered by Mo Salah (18) and Newcastle's Jacob Murphy (12). Jamie Gittens transfer statement confirms end of 'challenging' Chelsea talks
Chelsea are ready to continue their summer spending with the signing of Jamie Gittens, having agreed a £55million deal with Borussia Dortmund, who've released a statement Chelsea have reached a full agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign Jamie Gittens, a statement has confirmed. Gittens, 20, is set to join the Blues on a seven-year contract after the two clubs finalised a deal in the USA. Negotiations were described as 'challenging' by Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl and they note that the details of the Englishman's contract with Chelsea are still to be finalised. Reports claim that the deal is worth £55million after the Blues saw their bid of £42m turned down by the Bundesliga giants last month, despite Gittens having already agreed personal terms. Both teams are currently competing at the Club World Cup which has reached the quarter-final stage. It's unconfirmed whether Gittens will be allowed to play for Chelsea while Dortmund are involved in the tournament. Gittens joined BVB in 2020 after leaving Manchester City, where he crossed paths with Blues manager Enzo Maresca. Chelsea's co-director of recruitment and talent, Joe Shields, brought the highly-rated winger to City during his time at the club. Once the transfer is completed, Gittens will be the fifth ex-City academy graduate in Maresca's squad, following in the footsteps of Cole Palmer, Tosin Adarabioyo, Romeo Lavia and Liam Delap. On Thursday, Dortmund confirmed that the 20-year-old was on the verge of signing for Chelsea, issuing a statement with comments from CEO Lars Ricken and Kehl. "Jamie Gittens' career is exemplary for the development of top talents at BVB," Ricken said. "We discovered Jamie very early, signed him practically for free, continuously developed him in our youth academy, and also offered him playing time at the highest level with the professional team. "Jamie has repaid the trust placed in him with commitment, performance, and goals. His transfer back to his native England would be extremely valuable to us. We wish Jamie only the very best for his sporting future." Kehl added: "The talks with Chelsea were challenging, but ultimately we are pleased that we can most likely realise our financial ambitions and then have planning security.
