Philippines accuses China of ‘aggressive' sea tactics
The Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources condemned on Thursday what it said was the 'aggressive interference' of the Chinese coastguard against the Datu Sanday and a second ship during the incident on Wednesday.
The encounter occurred near a group of small sandbanks in the Spratly Islands where two Filipino ships were collecting sand samples 'as part of a marine scientific research initiative', the statement said.
'At approximately 0913H, CCG vessel 21559 water cannoned and sideswiped the BRP Datu Sandaytwice … putting at risk lives of its civilian personnel.' The 'aggressive interference, dangerous maneuvers, and illegal acts' damaged the Philippine ship's port bow and smokestack, according to the bureau's statement. The Chinese coastguard said the Philippine vessel 'dangerously' approached its ship. (Agencies)

Dhaka plane crash: Death toll rises to 31
dpa Dhaka The death toll from the crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training jet into a school in Dhaka has risen to 31, most of whom are pupils, officials said on Tuesday. The Chinese-made F-7BGI fighter jet crashed into the two-storey Milestone School and College in the north of the capital on Monday. The armed forces said in the afternoon that the death toll had risen to 31, without giving details. Twenty deaths and some 171 wounded were reported on Monday. Seven more people died of their injuries overnight. Earlier, Sayedur Rahman, an assistant to interim government head Muhammad Yunus, said the pilot and 25 children were among the 27 dead counted by that point. The identity of six bodies could not be determined, he said. Some 78 people, mostly students and many with burn injuries, were undergoing treatment at different hospitals. The crash occurred minutes after the plane took off on Monday afternoon, according to the Bangladeshi military. It said that the pilot of the training aircraft noticed a technical malfunction soon after it took off from Dhaka's Kurmitola airbase. At the time of the crash, many children were still at the school, which teaches children from elementary class up to 12th grade. The government announced a day of national mourning on Tuesday. The national flag has been lowered to half-mast at all public and private institutions. Several hundred pupils demonstrated near the crash site, demanding a thorough investigation and an accurate death count. The demonstration began as two senior advisers from the interim administration arrived at the scene in the morning. The protesters chanted slogans such as 'We want justice' and 'Why did our brothers die? We demand answers!' effectively trapping the advisers and several senior officials inside the school building. Pupils have alleged that authorities attempted to conceal the true number of casualties, a claim the government has dismissed as false.

Israel killing Gaza civilians with commercial drones, probe finds
Agencies The Israeli army is weaponising Chinese-made drones to kill Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to an investigation by the Israeli publications 972 Magazine and the Local Call. The drones are operated manually by soldiers on the ground to bomb civilians – including children – to force them out of their homes or prevent them from returning to areas where Palestinians have been expelled, the outlets reported on Sunday. The publications interviewed seven soldiers and officers to produce their findings, they said. The report was published as criticism of Israel's plan to set up an internment camp in southern Gaza is growing. Former Israeli Prime Ministers Yair Lapid and Ehud Olmert said it would amount to a 'concentration camp' if Palestinians there are not allowed to leave. 'The weaponisation of civilian drones to kill and dispossess Palestinians is the latest revelation of the cruelties normalised in Gaza and further evidence of how Israel is trying to forcibly transfer the population to the south of the Strip,' Al Jazeera's Nour Odeh said, reporting from Amman, Jordan, because Israel has banned Al Jazeera from reporting from Israel and the occupied West Bank. Soldiers are using mostly Evo drones produced by the Chinese company Autel, which are sold commercially for about $3,000 and used by photographers, the investigation found. 'However, with a military-issued attachment known internally as an 'iron ball', a hand grenade can be affixed to the drone and dropped with the push of a button to detonate on the ground,' the report said, adding that a majority of Israeli military companies in Gaza use these drones. 'Deliberately targeted children' An Israeli soldier who served in the Rafah area this year and was identified in the report only as S was tasked with coordinating drone attacks in a neighbourhood of the city that the army had ordered to be evacuated, the Israeli media outlets reported. 'It was clear that they were trying to return to their homes – there's no question,' the soldier told the publications. 'None of them were armed, and nothing was ever found near their bodies. We never fired warning shots. Not at any point.' Israeli soldiers also said they did not allow bodies to be collected, sometimes letting stray dogs eat them as they watched and filmed from afar. In several cases, S told the outlets, the Israeli army deliberately targeted children. 'There was a boy who entered the [off-limits] zone. He didn't do anything. [Other soldiers] claimed to have seen him standing and talking to people. That's it – they dropped a grenade from a drone,' S said. Israeli soldiers said the drones 'were used to empty Palestinian neighbourhoods and to teach Palestinians, through blood, not to return', Odeh said. According to the soldiers interviewed, the commercial drones are advantageous because they are much cheaper than military-grade ones. 'It's very cheap, it's very easy to use. It's decentralised in a way, the use of these drones, because it's a platoon that can use them. It does not need to require the authorisation from central command,' Meron Rapoport, editor and writer at the Local Call, told Al Jazeera. Israeli army units in Gaza are also crowdfunding in Israel and the United States to buy more of these drones, posting videos to thank donors for their contributions, the report said.

Chinese national detained at Milan airport over US espionage claims
RomecTypeface:> A Chinese national has been detained at a Milan airport over suspicion of espionage in the United States. Italy's ANSA news agency reported on Monday that the 33-year-old man was accused by the FBI of involvement in a hacker group that allegedly spied on COVID-19 vaccine research data at the University of Texas in 2020. The arrest occurred on Thursday as the man arrived at Milan Malpensa Airport from Shanghai. The man was facing an international arrest warrant. He maintains his innocence but is currently in custody. According to ANSA, the suspect is accused of cyberfraud and aggravated identity theft, having been accused of spying on universities, immunologists and virologists in the US. (DPA)
