Chandigarh: MC slaps ₹13,500 fine on PNB for littering
MC officials said on Friday the challan was issued under the Solid Waste Management Rules.
'On July 2, MC teams were carrying out an inspection in Sector 17-B when heaps of garbage were found outside the bank. Acting promptly, the team thoroughly inspected the dumped waste and retrieved slips belonging to the bank, thereby confirming the origin of the litter,' said the MC official.
The official added that teams had earlier too found the bank dumping waste in the open instead of handing it over to garbage collectors. Though the bank was warned, it did not mend its ways, said the official.
Municipal commissioner Amit Kumar also issued a warning to all commercial and institutional establishments, besides residents. 'Any form of littering or violation of cleanliness norms in public spaces will invite strict action. The action (against PNB) reiterated the civic body's commitment to maintaining cleanliness across Chandigarh. We urge all citizens and organisations to act responsibly. MC continues its efforts to ensure a cleaner and greener city and seeks full cooperation from the public in this mission,' said Kumar.
5,200 challans issued in just 4 months
The MC revealed that from January 1 to April 31 this year, over 5,200 challans were issued for various violations related to littering and improper waste disposal. On an average, around 1,200 challans are being issued each month, as the corporation ramps up enforcement drives across residential, commercial, and institutional areas.
MC officials said that, like in the PNB case, garbage is often thoroughly inspected during drives to trace its origin. These forensic-style inspections have become a key tool in holding violators accountable.
In addition to penalising public littering, the Chandigarh MC is also acting tough against residents who fail to segregate garbage at source. Households are required to separate dry, wet, and sanitary waste, and non-compliance is leading to further penalties.
Special task force to trace supply chain of plastic bags
MC commissioner Amit Kumar issued a stern warning to all individuals, traders, and commercial establishments found violating the single-use plastic ban in the city.
While reviewing the enforcement of the ban, the commissioner directed the MC officers concerned to trace and dismantle the supply chain of plastic carry bags entering Chandigarh. He warned that strict legal action will be taken, which may include heavy penalties, seizure of goods, and in severe cases, temporary or permanent closure of the establishment.
As part of the Plastic Mukt Chandigarh campaign, rigorous enforcement drives have been conducted since the ban came into effect on June 18, 2025. So far, 520 challans have been issued, 123 kg banned plastic carry bags have been confiscated besides selling 423 kg compostable bags.
The commissioner said that MC enforcement teams are inspecting sensitive areas such as apni mandis, grocery shops, street vendors, and markets on a daily basis.

There are about 15 subsidiaries or joint ventures of PSBs lined up for initial public offering or divestment in medium to long term, sources said. Wherever required, banks should invest funds to scale up operations of their subsidiaries or joint ventures, sources said, adding, banks can look at unlocking value at an opportune time. As a precursor to monetisation, sources said, banks should improve governance, professional decision-making and bring in greater operational efficiency in their subsidiaries.

Pune alleged rape case: Police serve notice to suspect as survivor admits knowing him for a year
A day after releasing the suspect following his detention in the Kondhwa alleged rape case, the Pune police on Saturday issued him a notice under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, Section 41A (notice of appearance before police officer), asking him to cooperate with the investigation and remain available for questioning when summoned. The duo was questioned for over an hour, during which the woman admitted that she had known the suspect for over a year. Their parents were also called to the police station during this exercise, said police. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) 'We also conducted a face-to-face interrogation between the 25-year-old suspect, an IT professional, and the complainant, a techie working with an IT firm. The duo was questioned for over an hour, during which the woman admitted that she had known the suspect for over a year. Their parents were also called to the police station during this exercise,' said Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, who is monitoring the case. 'According to the woman, although she had invited the man to her house, she was uncomfortable over how things progressed and decided to approach the police. The rape angle is still being probed,' Kumar said, adding that the survivor's medical report is inconclusive on her accusations. Kumar said the complainant is undergoing counselling sessions facilitated by police-appointed professionals. He said that the motive behind the woman's actions is still unclear and part of the ongoing investigation. 'The suspect was not a delivery executive but has known the woman for a year and was invited to the flat by the latter. The selfie was clicked with mutual consent, and the message on her mobile that raised alarm was edited and posted by the woman after he left. The suspect would often visit the complainant's flat and even order food for her through online platforms,' the senior police officer said. Meanwhile, speaking to the media on the alleged rape case after attending a Guru Purnima event in the city on Saturday, deputy chief minister and Pune guardian minister Ajit Pawar said, 'People should not jump to conclusions before facts are established. Based on a report I received late last night, both the complainant and suspect are familiar with each other. I have asked the police chief to hold a press briefing to share details about the case.'

Four booked for assaulting ASI, looting service gun in Gurugram
At least four unidentified suspects were booked for allegedly assaulting an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), ransacking his car and then looting his loaded service pistol when he had tried to intervene in a brawl causing road block on the Delhi-Jaipur expressway service lane in Bilaspur, police said on Saturday. Three of the suspects involved in the incident were detained on Saturday. (ARCHIVES) Investigators said that the incident took place at 10.20pm on Thursday when ASI Lalit Kumar had reached near Sidhrawali. Kumar was the gunner of an additional district judge posted in Rewari and was returning to his residence in Nuh when the incident took place, said police. Three of the suspects involved in the incident were detained on Saturday by the Manesar crime branch unit, said Sandeep Kumar, public relations officer of the Gurugram police. 'Their identities are being verified. The team was carrying out raids at several locations to nab others involved in the incident and also to recover the ASI's service pistol and ammunition,' said Kumar. Police officials said that the ASI was stuck on the service road due to the brawl going on between a group of men which had also halted traffic movement. As the ASI was in a hurry, he got out of his car and scolded the suspects to move away to clear the road for traffic movement. Investigators said that instead of fleeing after spotting an armed police official, the suspects assaulted him and ransacked his car. They also looted his service pistol along with 10 live cartridges before fleeing in a white Maruti Swift car from the spot. On complaint of the ASI, an FIR was registered against the unidentified suspects under sections 3(5) (common intention), 309(4) (robbery), 309(6) (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 324 (4) (Mischief causing damage to the amount of ₹ 20,000 and more but less than ₹1 lakh) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Bilaspur police station on Friday.
