Jason Schwartzman Recalls Working With ‘Real Legend' Irrfan: ‘It's So Sad...'
Jason Schwartzman gets emotional talking about his The Darjeeling Limited co-star Irrfan. He further recalls catching a show of Quantum Of Solace at a theatre in India.
Jason Schwartzman's association with India dates back to the mid-2000s. A large portion of Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited were shot in Rajasthan's Jodhpur and Udaipur. The film starring Jason, Owen Wilson and Adrian Brody also had prominent Indian influences. For instance, most of the album had film score music composed by late auteur Satyajit Ray. Wes, in fact, had said that it was the legend's works like Charulata, among others, that made him want to come to India.
Interestingly, The Darjeeling Limited also had Irrfan in a cameo appearance. Speaking to News18 exclusively, Jason says he vividly and fondly remembers Irrfan. Jason, in fact, gets emotional as he talks about the late actor, grieving his loss even today. 'I don't watch a lot of [Indian] movies. I won't say that I'm totally well-versed and aware [with Indian actors]. In The Darjeeling Limited, I got to work with a real legend. It's so sad that he passed away. Just to see the way he was… never mind! If I talk about him, I'll get too sad," he tells us.
The other thing he remembers from his India trip is the love Indians hold in their heart for movies. During the shoot, Jason along with the team of The Darjeeling Limited went to catch a show of Quantum Of Solace on the big screen. 'There's so much love for movies and cinema in India. One of the best experiences that I've had in my life was going to watch a new James Bond film [in India] when it had come out. The whole group went to watch it. It was like heaven! I saw a bunch of non-James Bond films as well," Jason recalls.
Jason is now gearing up for the release of HBO's Mountainhead created by Jesse Armstrong of Succession fame. Talking about it, he says, 'In my opinion, there are definitely parts that are physical and funny and bonkers that I didn't see in Succession. I always use this analogy about a band. If you like a band or a musician and they release something new and you listen to it, you know that it's their style and only they could've written it and yet, there's a new quality."
The Asteroid City and The Grand Budapest Hotel actor continues, 'Maybe they used a new instrument or they worked with a new producer or they've a new guitar player. And this new flavour adds so much to the shelf of what they do. Mountainhead is clearly a Jesse Armstrong piece in style but it's also him with all of us." Mountainhead also stars Steve Carell, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef.

Dalai Lama's 90th birthday celebrations underway with politicians, celebrities in attendance
Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 6 (ANI): At the 90th birthday celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama held at the Tsuglagkhang temple in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, with Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh and other dignitaries The dignitaries seated on the dais along with the Tibetan spiritual leader included Hollywood actor Richard Gere. Tibetan and Indian national played on the occasion. Monks, devotees, and international guests gathered for the celebration to honour the life and teachings of the Dalai Lama, who is widely regarded as a global symbol of compassion, non-violence and interfaith harmony. Meanwhile, Tibetan Buddhist monks living in exile offered special prayers at the Dorjidak Monastery near Shimla at Panthaghati this morning to mark the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama. The occasion was marked by solemn rituals, long-life prayers, and symbolic offerings led by a young boy monk, Nawang Tashi Rapten, recognised as the reincarnation of the Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, the head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The boy monk also cut a ceremonial cake as part of the celebrations, offering prayers for the spiritual leader's long life. Explaining the significance of the day, Tibetan Buddhist monk Kunga Lama expressed both joy and reverence. 'As a Tibetan Buddhist, I would say this celebration of the birthday of the Dalai Lama is not only a celebration, but also he is the identity of the Tibetan community, Tibetan unity, monks, and the leader of the whole culture of peace and compassion,' Kunga Lama said. 'It is our responsibility to carry out what he says as Buddhists. As I already said, he is the identity of the Tibetan community. Another thing I would like to say is that he has always been a guide to the world with compassion and love. Most of us follow his way, what he preaches,' he said. 'We are offering prayers here for the long life of the Dalai Lama and also for those who are suffering in the whole of Himachal due to flooding, and also those suffering all around the world. We are trying to follow the Dalai Lama's path. Definitely, it's not only important for me; the Dalai Lama has to continue the lineage not just for me but for the whole world,' he said. 'The little boy monk here is not only an ordinary monk; he is the reincarnation of Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, who will be the head of the Nyingma school in the future. He just offered prayers and cut the cake for the long life of the Dalai Lama. On one hand, it is a happy moment for us; on the other, I cannot fully express it, as he is growing old, but we depend on hope,' the Buddhist monk further said. The Dalai Lama, born as Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, in Takster, a small farming village in northeastern Tibet, was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two. He was formally installed as the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet on February 22, 1940, and was given the name Tenzin Gyatso. The term 'Dalai Lama' is Mongolian, meaning 'Ocean of Wisdom'. In Tibetan Buddhism, Dalai Lamas are considered manifestations of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, an enlightened being who chooses to be reborn to serve all sentient beings. After the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1949, the Dalai Lama assumed full political authority in 1950. He was forced to flee into exile in March 1959 following the violent suppression of the Tibetan uprising. He has since lived in India, along with over 80,000 Tibetan refugees, continuing to advocate for peace, non-violence, and compassion. For over six decades, His Holiness has been a global ambassador of Buddhist philosophy, compassion, peace, and interfaith harmony, continuing to inspire millions worldwide. Celebrations were held across Tibetan settlements in India and abroad, with many also expressing hope that the Dalai Lama's lineage will continue through a recognised reincarnation in the future. Saif Ali Khan loses Rs 15000 crore Bhopal inheritance case after court declares...
Saif Ali Khan loses Rs 15000 crore Bhopal inheritance case after court declares... Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and his family suffered a major legal setback earlier this week after Madhya Pradesh High Court overturned a 25-year-old order that affirmed their ownership over a property worth Rs 15000 crore. The court has now ordered the case to be heard afresh. Two decades ago, a trial court judgement declared Saif Ali Khan, along with his mother Sharmila Tagore, and sisters Soha and Saba Ali Khan, as the owners of the properties they inherited from the rulers of princely state of Bhopal. However, as reported by PTI, High Court Justice Sanjay Diwedi has asked the court to conduct a fresh trial and settle the case within a year. The move could rephase the inheritance structure of The Bhopal royal family, and bring back the legal attention to one of the most controversial property disputes. Other heirs of Nawab Hamidullah questioned the inheritance by the Pataudi Siblings. According to the lawyers, Begum Suraiya Rashid and Nawab Mehr Taj Sajida Sultan, along with others had filed case against 'unfair' partition of Nawab Hamidullah's property. However, on February 14, 2000, the Bhopal district court 'unfairly' dismissed their separate appeals. Lawyers claim that the partition of Nawab Hamidullah's personal property should have been done fairly between Saif Ali Khan, Sharmila Tagore and 16 other heirs, as per the Muslim Personal Law. What is Enemy Property Act? The Pataudi family's assets in Bhopal fell under enemy property, which comes under Enemy Property Act, enacted in 1985 after the 1965 India-Pakistan war. Under this law, Indian government has the authority to seize land, budlings and other belongings that once belonged to people who left India and moved to China or Pakistan. The act has been applied in this case as Saif's great-grandmother, Abida Sultan- daughter of Nawab Hamidullah Khan and sister of Sajida Sultan renounced her Indian citizenship and moved back to Pakistan after Partition. Why Court dismissed Saif Ali Khan's Petition? In 2015, Saif Ali Khan contested the declaration and secured a temporary stay from the Hight Court. However, in 2024, the court rejected his petition, and dismissed his challenge. In its recent order, Saif and his family were given 30 days to challenge the court's decision by filing a petition with appellate tribunal, but no such appeal was made. The properties are now legally open for the government to acquire, and Bhopal District administration might soon take over the process. This ongoing dispute, coupled with fresh legal notice, has once again shed light on the Pataudi family's complex legacy, which continues to affect the heirs of pre-partition families.
