Ace of Base now as iconic 90s band suffer Eurovision failure and knifeman terror
Swedish Europop group Ace of Base were once some of the biggest names in music, but their story is one that is filled with surprise achievements, failures and regret
Ace of Base, the creators of some of the most iconic Europop tunes of the 90s, have had a rollercoaster journey. Their story is filled with everything from humble beginnings in Sweden to gangland threats and even an unsuccessful Eurovision attempt...
The Scandinavian electro-pop band was first established in 1987 in Gothenberg, consisting of siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggren, with Ulf Ekberg rounding off the quartet.
They started their journey performing in various clubs around the Swedish city but initially found it tough to gain traction, as heavy metal was the preferred genre for Swedes at the time, quite different from their techno sound. However, after their single Wheel of Fortune hit the charts, their subsequent release, All that She Wants, catapulted them to global fame, earning platinum certification and topping the UK charts for three consecutive weeks in 1993.
Their success continued with hits like The Sign, becoming club favourites worldwide in the early 90s. But, just as swiftly as they rose to stardom, they faded into obscurity.
The band was last seen performing in a series of concerts between 2007 and 2009 as a trio without Linn. Since then, the original members of the band have all embarked on very different journeys:, reports the Daily Record.
Jenny Berggren
Jenny, the only ex-member from the band to embark on a solo career after departing in the late 00s, also turned her hand to writing. She released her autobiography, Vinna hela världen, in 2009. However, a promised English version, titled To Win the World, never emerged.
Her solo musical journey began with Here I Am in 2010, peaking at number 14 in Swedish charts; she followed up with Gotta Go, and unveiled her maiden album, My Story, that year.
2010 saw another bid for the spotlight as Jenny contended for the honour of representing Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with Let Your Heart B Mine, but didn't secure the nomination.
Fast forward, Jenny starred in the 2024 documentary Ace of Base: All That She Wants, telling the band's story alongside Ulf.
She reflected on a terrifying incident from the early '90s in which a fan invaded her home and threatened her life by holding a knife to her throat.
Reliving the harrowing moment with People, she asserted: "I think that was when the star was born in me. I wanted to sing. I had to calculate with all the dangers, and I just realised, 'No, I want to sing. This is what I want'."
Ulf Ekberg
Meanwhile, band founder Ulf Ekberg has swapped melodies for tech ventures back home. In conversation with ABC, Ekberg expressed his enthusiasm about the tech buzz: "There's so many tech companies in Sweden, especially Stockholm.
"I'm interested in creating a sector in technology and music. I'm building companies, and it's been a fantastic last five years. It feels like everything is exploding here. We are in a lot of different sectors, but we try to keep it to the creative sectors as much as possible; movies, TV, music and entertainment, which are obviously very close to my heart."
The documentary last year also saw Ulf candidly discuss his past affiliations with a far-right extremist group during his teens in Sweden, expressing profound remorse for his actions. Speaking to People, he continued: "I think it's a very important topic to talk about because it is a very angry world we live in right now. It's much more angry than when I was a teenager.
"I hope that maybe that part of this documentary can show that even if you are completely lost, you can always find your way and it's never too late - which, I was blessed with a second chance in my life."
Jonas and Linn Berggren
Post-band life has seen Jonas and Linn Berggren shying away from the limelight, especially Linn who has kept her distance from the glare of fame. Jonas briefly emerged to attend an event highlighted at the end of the documentary, while Linn decided to contribute through a letter read by Jenny in the concluding episode.
The band, however, did reunite for a one-off celebration on their 30th anniversary. Much to the joy of numerous fans, they returned to headline the 90s Nostalgic Electric Circus festival in Canada, donning black lace and flower-inspired outfits.

Fury as abuser Chris Brown gets to play Hampden while Kneecap axed from TRNSMT
Chris Brown will perform to thousands of fans at Scotland's national stadium on Tuesday despite his history of assault and domestic violence. Women's groups are furious that convicted domestic abuser Chris Brown will play Hampden – while Irish rappers Kneecap were axed from TRNSMT. R'n'B star Brown, 36, will perform to thousands of fans at Scotland's national stadium on Tuesday despite his history of assault and domestic violence. In 2009, Brown was sentenced to five years probation and community service for attacking ex Rihanna. The Bajan star was pictured with a split lip after Brown hit her. The move came after calls by John Swinney to axe the Irish hip hop act, with the First Minister saying the political rhetoric 'crossed the line'. Kneecap band member Mo Chara was charged with a terror offence over allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a gig in London last November. Jenni Snell, CEO of Scotland's Young Women's Movement, said: 'It is deeply disappointing that performers with histories of violence against women are able to play major, national venues like Hampden Park. 'With the recent context of Kneecap being dropped by TRNSMT following controversy sparked by a political campaign against them, we are forced to question why a known domestic abuser playing a major Glasgow venue has not generated any controversy whatsoever. 'When you consider TRNSMT and Chris Brown's UK tour are run by the same promoter, it's only right these double standards are scrutinised.' Scots promoter DF Concerts –behind next month's TRNSMT festival in Glasgow Green – is a subsidiary of Live Nation which is organising Brown's tour. The singer has been able to continue performing despite appearing in court this month over an alleged bottle attack against a man at a London nightclub in 2023. Brown has pleaded not guilty and was freed on conditional bail. Domestic abuse charity Glasgow Women's Aid accused the entertainment industry of repeatedly 'turning a blind eye' to violence against women. The group said: 'Kneecap were recently removed from a UK festival line-up because of political views. They were deemed too controversial and dropped from the bill. Yet artists accused of repeated violence against women continue to tour, headline and profit with little pushback. 'Promoters, venues and sponsors claim to stand against violence against women but continue to hand a mic to men who harm.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Male Allies Challenging Sexism (MACS), which has been running its #NoAbusersOnStage campaign since 2023, said: 'Chris Brown's booking at Hampden underlines how accepted male violence against women is in our society. "Within the music industry and the general public the vast majority of people won't care enough about Chris Brown being a violent abuser. Promoters and venues will be more interested in making money and his fans will care more about his music than his 'past actions'." Snell added: 'We're currently seeing a rise in sexism across society, driven by misogynistic influencers, celebrities and politicians in an increasingly vitriolic landscape… 'We need to be mindful of the message we send to young women about how they are valued in society when domestic abusers are celebrated, and of the message this sends to young men too.' Glasgow City Council said its role is to 'ensure events are safe and properly organised', adding: 'Any issues in relation to an act performing at an event are a matter for the promoter of the event.' DF Concerts, Brown and Kneecap were contacted for comment.

X Factor star 'splits from husband of eight years' after meeting on the show as she makes her Glastonbury Festival debut
X Factor stars Lucie Jones and Ethan Boroian have reportedly split after eight years together. The former couple first met during auditions on the talent show in 2009, and later got together, although reports have suggested the pair are no longer together. And now Lucie, 34, is making her Glastonbury debut this weekend following the alleged split. Sources say the couple are now going through a divorce, and Lucie no longer follows her husband on social media. It's claimed that they have 'grown apart' in their relationship, with Lucie and Ethan marrying at a young age and now realising their focus has changed. MailOnline have contacted Lucie's reps for comment. A source told The Sun: 'She has been busy focusing on pursuing her career on the West End stage and travelling the globe, they're moving on with their lives. 'Lucie's in a really good place and has already moved on and met someone else and has loved performing at Glastonbury.' They added: 'Ethan is no longer in showbusiness and their lives were headed in different directions.' The singer's first appearance at Glastonbury took place this weekend at Worthy Farm. Lucie admitted she was 'delighted to be involved' ahead of the three-day stint. The pop star previously represented the UK in Eurovision, and credited the contest for 'changing her life.' She also revealed she still keeps in touch with people on the show, including Joe McElderry, who Lucie is heading to Ibiza with. Last month, Lucie announced the exciting news on Instagram with her official Glastonbury poster. 'Worthy Farm, here I come. I'm so ridiculously excited to share that I will be performing at Glasto 2025,' she wrote. 'Joined by a band led by the unmatched @jonrangerinsta and guided as always by the best of the best @noisebyjonny. 'I'm there to make some festival history in being the first musical theatre artist ever to perform at the festival. 'Cannot wait to see the happiest people in the world - the glasto ticket holders - at Astrolabe on Thurs Fri and Sat! Let's all defy gravity in a field together babyyyyyyyyy!!' After she was voted out of the X Factor, Lucie went on to find huge success in musical theatre. The young star played Cosette in Les Miserables opposite Nick Jonas and performed the role of Meat in the 2013 Arena Tour of We Will Rock You. In 2016, she played Elle Woods in the UK Tour of Legally Blonde the Musical and was cast as Maureen Johnson in Rent.

X Factor star 'splits from husband of 8 years' as she makes Glastonbury debut
A former X Factor star has reportedly called it quits with her husband of eight years as she makes her Glastonbury debut this weekend at Worthy Farm A former X Factor star has split from her husband of eight years as she also makes her Glastonbury debut. Lucie Jones and Ethan Boroian are no longer together, according to reports. The couple had met each other during their X Factor auditions in 2009, but they have now called it quits. It's said the duo are quietly going through a divorce and Lucie no longer followers her husband on social media. It's claimed the pair have simply grown apart in their relationship. A source said the duo realised they were "young when they married" and now Lucie's focus has changed. Speaking to the Sun, an insider said: "She has been busy focusing on pursuing her career on the West End stage and travelling the globe, they're moving on with their lives. Lucie's in a really good place and has already moved on and met someone else and has loved performing at Glastonbury." They added: "Ethan is no longer in showbusiness and their lives were headed in different directions." Lucie's appearance at Glastonbury was the first time she had been on the stage at the Worthy Farm festival. Before the weekend, she promised "cool surprises" during the "huge celebration of music and theatre" as she got ready for a three-day spell. She admitted she was delighted when she got the call to be involved. Speaking to the Mirror before the sets, she explained what people could expert from her. She said: "When I was there last year, I was like, 'why is there no musical theatre here?' I was just walking around and I was thinking, these people would love a bit of defying gravity. "I think a lot of people think of musical theatre as like jazz hands and tap dance. But that just isn't the style that I do. It's going to be super upbeat and you're going to know every song. There's a bit of that in musical theatre, of course, but it's a whole world of other stuff as well." And she went on to tease more about her sets. "There's a couple of friends that I've got that are playing at Glastonbury who, quite possibly will be joining me, or I'll be joining them during their set," she said. "I'm really excited about one or two of them. It's going to be super cool and they're not necessarily musical theatre acts." Lucie previously represented the UK in Eurovision. Following her stint on the contest eight years ago she then credited the X Factor for "changing her life". The series produced a number of stars including winner Joe McElderry, who Lucie still keeps in touch with now. "I'm going to Ibiza tomorrow and I'm going to see Joe McElderry," she said.
