Sarawak premier proposes regional collaboration in hydrogen certification
Speaking at the World Hydrogen Asia 2025 in Tokyo on July 10, Abang Johari said Sarawak was developing its own certification platform aligned with international standards to ensure transparency and traceability. He suggested this could serve as a model for regional efforts.
"This platform can be a stepping stone for broader regional collaboration to potentially establish an Asean-level certification platform for hydrogen," he said.
He also urged member states to explore shared infrastructure, including export terminals and storage facilities, and to co-invest in training and research.
"We must build not only facilities, but also skills and knowledge ecosystems. Shared research and development, joint training programmes, and innovation clusters will accelerate our collective transition in technology and human capital exchange," he said.
Abang Johari said Sarawak, though only a subnational region, has a global mindset with strong intention to drive actions.
He said the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER) was launched earlier this year to position the state as a cost-competitive and scalable hydrogen producer.
He added that Bintulu has been selected as the site of Malaysia's first Transitioning Industrial Cluster (TIC) – a prestigious initiative led by the World Economic Forum.

He said this year's Sarawak Day celebration, themed 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' (Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak), reflects the state government's and the people's shared commitment to reinforcing strong ties among one another. 'The Sarawak government will continue implementing the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to ensure inclusive socio-economic prosperity,' he said in a post on the Office of the Premier of Sarawak's Facebook page today. The message was also featured in the official programme booklet for the state-level Sarawak Day 2025 celebration, to be held in Miri tomorrow. Abang Johari reaffirmed the state government's commitment to enhancing digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI), driving environmental sustainability, and accelerating the development of key sectors such as oil and gas, plantation, tourism, and modern agriculture. In addition, he also emphasised that quality and inclusive education are central to human capital development. 'Therefore, starting next year, free education will be provided for all Sarawakian students in selected fields at state-owned universities. This is to enable students to focus on their studies and ease the financial burden on their families,' he said.
