FC Barcelona Agrees To Mammoth $70 Million Fine From UEFA

Forbesa day ago
FC Barcelona has been hit with a mammoth $70 million fine from UEFA.
More bad news for FC Barcelona, as the Catalans have been hit with a mammoth $70 million fine from European soccer governing body UEFA for a Financial Fair Play (FFP) violation in the financial years of 2023 and 2024.
'The First Chamber of the CFCB determined that HNK Hajduk Split (CRO), Aston Villa FC (ENG), Chelsea FC (ENG), FC Barcelona (ESP), Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) and FC Porto (POR) failed to comply with the rule on football revenue, applied for the first time in the 2024/25 season. The analysis covered the financial years ending in 2023 and 2024,' began a statement from UEFA.
"In assessing clubs' compliance with the football earnings rule, the CFCB paid particular attention to transactions involving the sale of tangible or intangible assets, the exchange of players (so-called "swaps") and transfers of players between related parties. Clubs were required to make adjustments, as profits from such transactions cannot be recognised as material income under the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations, 2024 Edition (the "Regulations")," it added.
"HNK Hajduk Split, Aston Villa FC, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and Olympique Lyonnais reached agreements with the CFCB for a period of 2, 3 or 4 years. The length of each agreement depends on the clubs' ability to comply with the Regulations within a specific timeframe. The ultimate goal of clubs is to fully comply with the rule on football revenues at the end of the settlement period (i.e. in the 2026/27 season for a period of 2 years, in the 2027/28 season for a period of 3 years, in the 2028/29 season for a period of 4 years).
All clubs agreed to pay a fine (conditional and unconditional), the amount of which is based on the amount of the breach. The transactional agreements, which cover a period of 4 years, also consider the expected financial result for the fiscal year ending in 2025," it concluded.
UEFA then listed the clubs, the length of time they have to get their finances in order, the fine they will be hit with if not, and how much of the sum is unconditional.
In short, FC Barcelona has been fined $70 million (€60 million) of which $17.7 million (€15 million) is unconditional and must be paid already. If it doesn't get its act together in two years, the whole amount will then be payable.
More bad news for FC Barcelona
On the same day it learned that Nico Williams had snubbed it to sign a 10-year extension with Athletic Club, despite reportedly having an agreement in place with the Euro 2024 winner, this is more bad news for FC Barcelona which is still in many ways recovering from its economic crisis at the turn of the decade. It was expecting this punishment to be handed down by UEFA, though the timing could have been better on a rough day for Culers.

Night Sky: How noctilucent clouds are made and Wales' space progress

This week saw a wonderful display of noctilucent clouds across the region as last Sunday evening's skies took on a dramatic and eerie appearance. Nick Edwards managed to capture the event over Newport, as the sun's rays reaching out from far below the horizon lit up tiny frozen water droplets high up in the Earth's atmosphere, creating the shimmering effect of wispy white clouds tinged with blue. Taken from the Latin for 'night-shining', we can expect further activity throughout the summer. We have a full moon on Thursday, July 10. This particular full moon is often referred to as a 'Buck Moon' because of the emergence of antlers on a deer buck's forehead during this part of the season. In Celtic folklore, terms such as 'Mead' or 'Herb' Moon can be found, with the Anglo-Saxons referring to it as a 'Hay Moon.' Space news and the proposed cuts to NASA's budget by the Trump administration will more than likely impact Europe's ExoMars rover mission which is already behind schedule. With the aim of placing a rover to explore the surface of Mars, it would seem the European Space Agency, (ESA), may have to go it alone. Recently, the Snowdonia Space Centre opened its Space Test and Training Centre, (STTC), with a day of demonstrations including rocket launches and the upward despatching of a high-altitude balloon. In a move to stay competitive with the rest of the UK and indeed Europe, the day signified Wales' intent to be at the forefront of enabling those interested in having their high-tech payloads delivered into space via rockets. It's a bold and innovative concept which is slowly gathering momentum but for those who lived during a Wales that was sustained by the coal industry and in more recent times the steel industry, a stark reminder that the shift in economic focus now lies firmly with the likes of such technology as 'microgravity manufacturing.' Attended by Rebecca Evans, MS, Welsh Government cabinet secretary for economy, energy, and planning, the new centre has received £820,000 of funding from the UK Space Agency with Matt Archer, its launch director, also in attendance. All told, with other financial contributions, £1.3 million has been invested with a view to boost the local economy and employment opportunities. With six other such Spaceports at sites including Argyll in western Scotland and Newquay in Cornwall, there has to be an exercise in caution following the announcement last week that the SaxaVord Spaceport in Lamba Ness, Shetlands Islands, (which appears to be further down the operational line than others), has delayed its first satellite launch from 2025 to 2026. Finally this week, the Earth's rotation during July and August is set to speed up with Wednesday, July 9, expected to be 1.30 milliseconds shorter than the usual length of a day. The speeding up over the two months is down to several factors, including sea levels, bucking the trend that overall rotation of the Earth is slowly down. Former MLB White Sox pitcher Jenks dies aged 44

Former Chicago White Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks, who helped the team win the 2005 World Series, has died at age 44, the MLB club announced (JONATHAN DANIEL) Bobby Jenks, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who helped the Chicago White Sox win the 2005 World Series, has died in Portugal aged 44, the club announced on Saturday. Jenks, an American right-hander, died on Friday in Sintra, Portugal, where he had been battling adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer, the White Sox said in a statement. Advertisement "We have lost an iconic member of the White Sox family today," said White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. "He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend and teammate. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts." Jenks made saves in games one and four of the 2005 World Series, in which the White Sox swept Houston in four games. The rookie also pitched scoreless 11th and 12th innings in a 14-inning Chicago win in game three. He threw the final pitch of the World Series in game four as the White Sox ended an 88-year title drought. Advertisement "None of us will ever forget that ninth inning of game four in Houston, all that Bobby did for the 2005 World Series champions and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago," Reinsdorf said. Jenks, an American League All-Star selection in 2006 and 2007, pitched for the White Sox for six MLB seasons from 2005-10, going 14-18 with a 3.40 earned-run average, 173 saves and 334 strikeouts over 329 relief appearances. In 2006 and 2007, Jenks recorded back-to-back 40-save seasons, which made him the second-youngest to achieve the feat at the time. Jenks retired 41 batters in a row in 2007 to match what was then an MLB record. Jenks finished his career in 2011 with the Boston Red Sox, playing only 19 games due to bone spurs on his spine that hampered nearby nerves and tendons. Overall, Jenks went 16-20 with a 3.53 ERA, 173 saves and 351 strikeouts over 348 career games. js/iwd

England Becomes First Reigning Champion to Lose a Women's Euro Opener

England set a number of unwanted firsts as it began the defense of its Women's European Championship title by losing to France 2-1 on Saturday. Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore scored two quickfire goals towards the end of the first half, as France recorded a ninth straight win and stunned the defending champion. Keira Walsh reduced the deficit three minutes from time, but it wasn't enough to prevent England from becoming the first titleholder to lose its opening match at a women's Euros. It also ended England coach Sarina Wiegman's remarkable flawless record in the competition, after winning 12 out of 12 matches across two tournaments as she steered first the Netherlands to the title and then England. The Lionesses next face the Netherlands on Wednesday, before taking on Wales in their final group match four days later. The Netherlands beat Wales 3-0 in the early match in Group D. France was without injured captain Griedge Mbock, while England welcomed back Lauren James with the midfielder starting her first match since a hamstring injury at the start of April. James almost gave England the lead within 40 seconds with a clever run into the box but fired narrowly over. Alessia Russo thought she gave England the lead in the 16th minute, turning in the rebound after Lauren Hemp's shot was saved, but it was ruled out for a tight offside decision on Beth Mead in the buildup. France grew in ascendancy after that. Sakina Karchaoui almost scored what would have been one of the goals of the tournament as she lobbed Hannah Hampton, but the ball landed in the side-netting. Hampton also had to make a couple of fine stops before France broke the deadlock in the 36th. Elise De Almeida won the ball in her own half before surging down the right and threading the ball through to Delphine Cascarino, who put in a low cross for Katoto to tap in at the back post. France doubled its lead just three minutes later. Baltimore mazed her way into the area, close to the byline, and Lucy Bronze inadvertently kept the ball in play with her attempted tackle, allowing the Chelsea forward to curl into the far side of the net. France was almost out of sight at the start of the second half, with Hampton having to scramble behind her and grab the ball before it crossed the line, after fumbling an effort from Grace Geyoro. England hadn't even had a shot on target before it got back into the game late on. A corner was cleared only to the edge of the area for Walsh to calmly control before firing into the top right corner for only her second international goal. Reporting by The Associated Press.
