
Honda pulls off surprise reusable rocket test launch
"The test was completed successfully, the first time Honda landed a rocket after reaching an altitude of nearly 300 meters (1,000 feet)," the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
The carmaker aims to achieve suborbital space flight in 2029. In 2021, Honda said it was studying space technologies such as reusable rockets but made no announcements prior to Tuesday's test.
"Honda has chosen to take on the technological challenge of developing reusable rockets by utilizing Honda technologies amassed in the development of various products and automated driving systems," it said.
The company said it has made no decisions regarding the commercialisation of this technology but that it has "the potential to contribute more to people's daily lives by launching satellites with its own rockets, that could lead to various services that are also compatible with other Honda business."
It added that growing expectations for a "data system in outer space" will likely increase the demand for satellite launch rockets in coming years.
The space race returns
NASA was the first to successfully test a reusable spacecraft with the Space Shuttle beginning in the 1980s. The booster rockets could be salvaged from the ocean and refurbished, while the Shuttle itself was designed to land like an airplane.
More recently, Elon Musk's SpaceX which is known for commercialising reusable rockets that land safely back on Earth. This has been used to establish the global satellite internet network Starlink.
Japan's space agency JAXA is also on a mission to become a major player in satellite launches. Japan's government has set up a multibillion-dollar space venture fund to subsidize private rockets, encouraging several Japanese startups to work on the reusable technology.

India adds 2.46 mn wireless subscribers in June 2025, led by urban growth
New Delhi: India's total wireless phone subscriber base, including mobile and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), rose to 1170.88 million at the end of June 2025, registering a monthly growth rate of 0.21 per cent, according to the latest data release by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This marks an increase of 2.46 million subscribers from 1168.42 million recorded at the end of May 2025. The overall growth was driven primarily by urban areas, which saw an increase from 634.91 million to 637.87 million wireless subscribers -- a monthly growth rate of 0.47 per cent. In contrast, rural wireless subscriptions declined slightly from 533.51 million to 533.00 million, reflecting a -0.10 per cent drop, the TRAI said. The data shows that the wireless mobile segment alone added 2 million new subscribers during June 2025, rising from 1161.03 million in May to 1163.03 million in June -- a 0.17 per cent monthly growth rate. The TRAI data reveals that the urban mobile subscribers grew from 630.42 million to 633.14 million, a growth rate of 0.43 per cent, while rural mobile subscribers declined from 530.60 million to 529.88 million, marking a -0.14 per cent decline. India's overall wireless tele-density improved slightly from 82.63 per cent in May to 82.74 per cent in June. The urban wireless tele-density increased from 124.91 per cent to 125.31 per cent, while the rural tele-density fell from 58.90 per cent to 58.82 per cent. In the mobile segment specifically, the national wireless (mobile) tele-density rose from 82.10 per cent to 82.18 per cent. Urban mobile tele-density increased from 124.03 per cent to 124.38 per cent, while rural tele-density saw a drop from 58.58% to 58.48 per cent. As of June 30, 2025, private access service providers held a dominant 92.20 per cent share of the mobile wireless market. The public sector units (PSUs) -- BSNL and MTNL -- accounted for just 7.80 per cent. In terms of regional performance, all service areas except Assam, Mumbai, Punjab, Delhi, and Kolkata showed growth in mobile wireless subscriptions during June 2025. The number of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers rose from 7.40 million in May to 7.85 million in June 2025. Of these, 4.73 million were from urban areas and 3.12 million from rural India, reflecting the continued expansion of next-generation wireless internet services. As per the data, as of the end of June 2025, the urban areas accounted for 54.48 per cent of total wireless subscribers while rural areas made up 45.52 per cent.

India Inc's revenue grew tepid 4-6% YoY in April-June: Crisil
New Delhi: India Inc's revenue likely grew a modest 4-6 per cent year-on-year in the April-June quarter of this current fiscal, slowing from 7 per cent growth in the previous two quarters, due to sluggish performance by the power, coal, information technology (IT) services and steel sectors, which collectively account for a third of the revenue, according to Crisil. Crisil reached this revenue estimate after analysing over 600 companies. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) likely rose 4 per cent year-on-year. However, the EBITDA margin likely fell 10-30 basis points (bps), weighed down by IT services, automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and pharmaceuticals, the rating agency said. Pushan Sharma, Director, Crisil Intelligence, asserted that the early onset of monsoon and lingering geopolitical uncertainties are expected to have materially impacted some sectors in April-June. "To wit, the rains-induced cooler summer culled demand for electricity. Consequently, the power sector's revenue is seen declining 8 per cent on-year. The lower demand also pushed down spot prices of electricity, and led to a 2-3 per cent lower demand for coal," Sharma said. "On the other hand, geopolitical uncertainties impacted the IT services sector, where revenue growth is seen flat on-year due to project delays stemming from tariff worries, which led to a slowdown in activity." The steel sector's revenue is expected to have grown a moderate 1-3 per cent year-on-year, due to planned maintenance shutdowns at major steel mills and a 2-4 per cent year-on-year decline in prices. The auto sector's revenue is foreseen rising 4 per cent year-on-year, owing to higher retail sales, partially offset by high inventory. An increase in prices, stemming from changes in the product mix and higher export realisations, likely helped revenue grow. Despite no significant increase in the Union Budget allocation for the construction sector, its revenue is expected to rise 6 per cent year-on-year, as engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies benefited from a low base effect caused by disruptions from the general elections in the first quarter of the last fiscal year. Five sectors -- pharmaceuticals, telecom services, organised retail, aluminium and airline -- likely drove revenue growth, Crisil said. Revenue for pharmaceuticals is expected to increase by 9-11 per cent year-on-year, surpassing corporate India's revenue growth over the past 10 quarters, driven by strong export demand and a stable domestic market. Telecom services revenue is expected to grow 12 per cent year-on-year, fueled by higher realisations of 11 per cent due to costlier subscription plans. Organised retail revenue is likely to rise 15-17 per cent, led by the value fashion and food and grocery segments. Airline revenue is expected to rise 15 per cent year-over-year, driven by a 10-12 per cent increase in volume due to expanded supply resulting from reduced aircraft groundings and the addition of new aircraft. Elizabeth Master, Associate Director, Crisil Intelligence, said, "The top 10 sectors, which collectively account for over 70 per cent of India Inc's revenue, likely showed a mixed trend in the Ebitda margin. While the margin rose for the power, cement, steel, telecom services, construction and aluminium sectors, it likely declined for IT services, automobile, FMCG and pharmaceuticals."

Taiwan's semiconductor talent shortage reaches 34,000 in May
Taipei: Taiwan's semiconductor industry faced a labour shortage of 34,000 workers as of May this year, according to a report released Monday by the 104 job bank and the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Focus Taiwan reported. The shortages came on the back of the industry's continued expansion, fueled by increased investment in advanced processes, the news article said, citing the 2025 Semiconductor Industry Talent Report. The three main job categories in demand were "production/quality control/environmental safety," "research and development," and "operations/technical support and maintenance," it said. Job openings for production, quality and environmental safety grew from 5,600 in October 2023 to roughly 10,000 in May 2025, while demand in the research and development category rose from 6,000 in 2023 to 9,316 in May this year, the report said. Furthermore, the number of job openings in the operations/technical support and maintenance category grew from 4,300 in October 2023 to 7,240 in May 2025 -- an increase of 67 percent, Focus Taiwan reported. This reflects rising demand for equipment operators and maintenance personnel driven by the expansion of advanced processes and advanced packaging production lines, the news article noted. Taiwan alone accounted for 68.8 percent of the world's foundry market in 2024, and also led the world in IC packaging and testing with nearly 50 percent of the market, according to Jeff Lin, general director of ITRI's Industry, Science and Technology International Strategy Center. The country is also a key production base for chips at 7 nanometers and below, and produces as much as 83 percent of the world's AI chips, Lin added. From 2010-2024, the output value of the IC industry tripled, while the number of newborns in Taiwan has declined by about 20 percent, highlighting concerns over a potential talent gap as the high-tech sector continues to grow rapidly, he explained. Recruiting of talent in the field of operations/technical support and maintenance has been especially difficult because this requires people to work shifts, the report said, adding that there is also an emphasis on hands-on and on-site skills. Meanwhile, the report provided an analysis of the sector's salary structure, showing that among non-managerial positions, analog IC design engineers had the highest median annual salary at NT$1.78 million (US$60,320), followed by digital IC design engineers at NT$1.57 million, it said.
