Sachin Waze's reinduction into police ruined things for MVA: Sanjay Raut

Hindustan Times19-05-2025
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has said in his book, 'Narkatla Swarg', that if assistant police inspector Sachin Waze had not been re-inducted into the police, many bitter moments of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government could have been avoided. Raut's book, which was released on Saturday, is about his days in Arthur Road Central Prison when he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for alleged money-laundering in the Patra Chawl scam case.
Raut has also reiterated that the then home minister Anil Deshmukh had no role in reinstating Waze, and he was brought back despite opposition from various quarters.
Waze was put in charge of the Mumbai police's Crime Intelligence Unit during the MVA government headed by Uddhav Thackeray. The controversial police officer was arrested in the murder of Mansukh Hiren, one of the accused in the Antilia bomb scare case, and is facing a slew of cases. He was also facing charges in the custodial death case of accused Khwaja Yunus. Earlier, he was associated with the Shiv Sena's IT cell.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Raut said that he had personally met NCP chief Sharad Pawar, urging him not to reinstate Waze, and Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi was witness to this. 'I told Pawar saheb that Waze's reinstatement could lead to controversies, but the decision had already been taken,' said Raut.
Abu Azmi confirmed that Sanjay Raut had opposed Waze's return to the Mumbai police. 'When I came to know that there was a proposal to reinstate him, I met Sharad Pawar and requested him to stop the process, as Waze was an accused in the Khwaja Yunus case,' he said. 'Sanjay Raut had also opposed it but Waze was reinstated anyway.'
The book says that Waze could not have been reinstated without the consent of the police commissioner. 'Someone had recommended his reinstatement. Someone in the government should have stopped it. I was not home minister or chief minister so I can't say much on it now,' Raut stated.
The book noted that one group had an interest in reinstating Waze, and Anil Deshmukh had to pay the price for this. 'The entire trial against Deshmukh was due to the statement made by Waze, who is a criminal. Waze's statements were used by the then opposition parties (the BJP) to target the government. But his statements were not accepted by the courts and this was a blow to the Enforcement Directorate. Deshmukh and Waze may have met just once for briefing on a legislature-related query,' says the book.
The book also mentions that Waze was extorting money for 'Number 1', and this was not Deshmukh but the then Mumbai police commissioner Parambir Singh.
HT attempted to contact Singh but he did not respond to calls. His successor Sanjay Pandey refused to comment.

Amid Thackeray-Fadnavis meetings, Shinde drops in a reality check

After two consecutive days of bonhomie between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde on Friday said that Thackeray not only backstabbed Fadnavis but even tried to arrest him. 'We are the witness to how Devendra ji was abused. The people had voted (in 2019) for Shiv Sena and BJP. But you backstabbed Devendra ji. I know how many calls Devendra ji made after the results, but those were never answered. Everyone has to pay for their deeds here itself,' said Shinde. He was speaking at the legislative council while replying to the discussion on last week motion moved by the Opposition. Shinde's stress on Thackeray damaging Fadnavis's prospects comes at a time when the other two were seen exchanging cordial greetings. On Wednesday, Fadnavis offered former ally and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray to join the Mahayuti while on Thursday both the leaders spent nearly 20 minutes chatting behind closed doors without the presence of any other leader. Shinde went on to claim that while Fadnavis had given away the Mumbai mayor post to Shiv Sena in 2017, Thackeray paid him back with betrayal. 'Devendra ji was challenged (by Thackeray) by saying either it will be you or me. It was then that I decided to act…even Devendra ji would be smiling now seeing the present developments,' he added, referring to the recent meetings between the two. The Deputy CM claimed that Thackeray hated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and therefore did not attend the programme where PM Modi was conferred with first Lata Mangeshkar award. 'I don't mess with people, but I do not leave those who mess with me,' he said. Uddhav had termed the MNS as a party which is over during one of the poll campaigns. Referring to this, Shinde took a dig on the possible alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) saying now some (Uddhav) are desperate to go with those whom they once called as finished.

Don't sign Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, send it back to state govt, Maha Vikas Aghadi urges governor

Mumbai: A delegation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), led by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Ambadas Danve, called on governor C P Radhakrishnan on Friday and urged him not to sign the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill 2024. The delegation also demanded that the governor send the bill back to the state govt and ask for it to be reconsidered by the legislature. Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar said the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill 2024 was passed without taking the opposition into confidence or allowing them to speak. "We had some objections to the bill, but we were not taken into confidence or asked about our suggestions. This bill will be used to hide failures of the state govt and suppress those who speak against it," he said. "There are many laws, so what was the need for this bill? This is not a public security bill, but a govt security bill. If this bill is for leftist ideology then tomorrow, those who commit extremist acts, any anti-national acts in this state, will action be taken based on ideology? Because an extremist is an extremist. Whether he is leftist or right wing, we have presented a clear position to the governor in this regard. We have told the governor that this bill is an attack on the rights of the common man and the Indian Constitution. Therefore, we have demanded that he send the bill back to the state govt for reconsideration," Wadettiwar added. "This incident has tarnished Maharashtra's image not only in the country, but also around the world. Legal action should be taken against the goons who carry out such attacks," he said. "We did not make a demand for President's rule, but we discussed improving the law and order situation in the state. Nowadays, accused are seen roaming with ministers and ruling party MLAs. Recently, a goon in Pune raised a ruckus in the police station."
