25 arrested in international AI-generated child image ring
The operation spanned 19 countries including the United States, with arrests taking place earlier in the week, EUROPOL, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation said in a statement.
"(This) has been one of the first cases involving AI-generated child sexual abuse material, making it exceptionally challenging for investigators, especially due to the lack of national legislation addressing these crimes," EUROPOL said in its statement.
The agency, which was founded in 1999, calls this kind of crime "one of the most threatening manifestations of cybercrime in the European Union."
In addition to the arrests this week, authorities searched 33 houses and seized 173 electronic devices.
The operation remains ongoing and police expect more arrests in the coming weeks, the agency said in the statement.
"These artificially generated images are so easily created that they can be produced by individuals with criminal intent, even without substantial technical knowledge," EUROPOL Executive Director Catherine De Bolle said in the agency's statement.
"This contributes to the growing prevalence of child sexual abuse material, and as the volume increases, it becomes progressively more challenging for investigators to identify offenders or victims. Law enforcement will need to develop new investigative methods and tools to address these emerging challenges."
Authorities from Denmark led the operation, which also involved officials in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Britain, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
"The main suspect, a Danish national who was arrested in November 2024, ran an online platform where he distributed the AI-generated material he produced. Following a symbolic online payment, users from around the world were able to obtain a password to access the platform and watch children being abused," EUROPOL said in the statement.
Last August, a U.S. Army soldier in Alaska was arrested for using AI to produce explicit images of children.

11 stabbed at northern Michigan Walmart; suspect in custody
A lone suspect is in custody after allegedly stabbing 11 people at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Mich., late Saturday afternoon. File Photo by Justin Lane/EPA-EFE July 26 (UPI) -- A lone attacker has been arrested after allegedly randomly stabbing 11 victims late Saturday afternoon at a Walmart in Traverse City, Mich. None of the 11 stabbing victims has died, but three are undergoing surgery following the attack that occurred around 5 p.m. EDT, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported. The lone suspect used a folding knife in what appeared to be a random attack, Grand Traverse County Sheriff Mike Shea told the Record-Eagle. The suspect "appears" to be a Michigan resident, Shea said during a press conference. Michigan State Police crime lab investigators are helping to gather and analyze evidence at the crime scene, which is located in the Grand Traverse Crossing mall in the southwestern portion of Traverse City. The stabbing victims were taken to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, where five are in serious condition and six are in critical condition. "We are working closely with local authorities and emergency services to ensure the best possible care for those impacted," hospital staff said. Traverse City is a popular vacation destination at the southern end of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay in northern lower Michigan. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a potential 2026 presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, moved to Traverse City in 2022. The city had a year-round population of 15,707 in 2023, but the population there and in nearby communities swells greatly during the summer months. It's known for beautiful sandy beaches, great freshwater fishing and hosting an annual National Cherry Festival that runs from the end of June through the Independence Day holiday. Traverse City is located 150 miles north of Grand Rapids and 255 miles northwest of Detroit.

Philippine Supreme Court blocks Duterte impeachment effort

File Photo by Rolex Dela Pena/EPA-EFE July 26 (UPI) -- An impeachment proceeding against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte can't proceed due to a constitutional limit on the annual number of impeachments, the Philippine Supreme Court ruled. The Philippine Constitution bans multiple impeachment proceedings in a given year, so Duterte could not be impeached until February, the nation's Supreme Court announced on Friday, the BBC reported. The ruling does not prevent Duterte's impeachment, but it delays it until an impeachment proceeding would not violate the Philippine Constitution. "It is not our duty to favor any political result," the court said in its ruling. "Ours is to ensure that politics are framed within the rule of just law." The court said it is prepared to address the claims against Duterte "at the proper time and before the appropriate forum." Lawmakers in the Philippine Parliament's lower house in February voted to impeach Duterte for allegedly misusing taxpayer dollars and threatening to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. It was the fourth impeachment case received by the lower chamber from December to February, one of which was transferred to the Senate. Duterte is the daughter of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and formerly was a close political ally of Marcos. She is considered to be a viable candidate for the nation's presidency during the 2028 election cycle after she and Marcos had a political fallout. Duterte and Marcos in 2022 formed what they called the "Uniteam," which temporarily united two of the nation's most powerful political families. After the pair secured wins in the May 2022 elections, the Uniteam began to fray. Duterte's father called Marcos a "drug addict," and Duterte in November said she ensured the president would be killed if she were killed first. The elder Duterte afterward was extradited to the Hague to be tried for alleged crimes against humanity due the deaths of thousands arising from his administration's war on drugs. Rodrigo Duterte was president for six years from June 2016 to June 2022. Sara Duterte says the accusations against her are politically motivated, although many supporting her impeachment note that 12 of the nation's 15 Supreme Court justices were appointed by her father.
