If the world has had enough of helping others, then somebody forgot to tell Spain.
Yes, Spain. The same country that, a little more than a decade ago, desperately accepted billions in bailout money from its European neighbors to keep its economy afloat. That Spain is now doing something almost unthinkable. It's ramping up aid spending just as the United States notoriously retreats. And in the process, Spain is trying to remind the world why we give back in the first place.
The crisis is steep. The pot of money going to global development is set to shrink by 17 percent, or $35 billion, in 2025, on top of a $21 billion drop the year before, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. That's a $56 billion funding vacuum where global aid for mosquito nets, vaccine research, and food assistance used to be. And the declines are likely to become even steeper in the years ahead, as cuts in the US take full effect.

It's far from enough to fill the foreign aid gap, however. And while the pain will fall primarily on impoverished recipient countries, foreign aid doesn't just help the countries that receive it. It helps everyone.
Diseases and conflict don't recognize legal borders and aid helps keep these deadly problems at bay. Every $100 million spent on preventing tuberculosis, HIV, and malaria helps prevent about 2.2 million new infections total. And global cuts are already expected to exacerbate the spread of diseases; former USAID officials anticipate cuts from the US alone could cause 28,000 new cases of infectious diseases like Ebola and Marburg each year. 'Even if you're in this isolationist mindset, you can't actually isolate yourself from the rest of the world,' said Rachael Calleja, a research fellow at the Center for Global Development.
The fact that some countries have managed to fight the impulse to isolate — convincing their citizens that problems abroad are interconnected with our problems at home — could help reshape the future of aid for the better. Their decisions point to the possibility of a new future for foreign aid that could be more collaborative and less paternalistic than before.
Ready or not, the old club's grip on global influence is now breaking down.
'Nobody who works in development sat around saying, 'The system is great. We're awesome. Let's just spend more money to do more of the same,'' said Dean Karlan, who was, until recently, the chief economist at USAID. 'There is a blank slate. Let's put in place a better system.'
Why are some countries bucking the trend?
Spain, Ireland, Italy, and South Korea are all increasing aid — but most have a lot of room for growth.
The United Nations set a lofty goal in the 1970s for wealthy countries to give away 0.7 percent of their gross national income (GNI) as development assistance. Half a century later, almost none do.
That includes this year's overachievers. Ireland spent 0.57 percent of its GNI — $2.47 billion — on development aid last year. Spain spent 0.25 percent or $4.35 billion, and Italy, 0.28 percent or $6.67 billion. South Korea spent 0.21 percent or $3.94 billion.
It's not a lot, especially compared to the $63.3 billion the US spent in 2024, although that only added up to 0.22 percent of its GNI. But these countries are moving forward at a time when everyone else seems to be moving backward. According to the global development consultancy SEEK Development's donor tracker, the US is now projected to spend just 0.13 percent of its GNI on overseas aid this year.
There is a growing recognition that someone has to fill the gaps left by the US, but everybody balks at the price tag, Arturo Angulo Urarte, a Madrid-based development expert, said in Spanish. 'It's like, 'Yes, but gosh, and how much does that mean? Oh, it means money? Well, then no.''
Spain's aid increase, however, has been a long time coming. Spanish activists launched a kind of Occupy Wall Street in favor of overseas aid back in the 1990s. A group of global development workers and grassroots activists staged hunger strikes and protest encampments, chaining themselves to government buildings to demand that Spain give at least 0.7 percent of its GNI to aid. At the time, Spain was giving around 0.24 percent of its GNI to aid, but the protests helped propel the country to double its commitment to a high of nearly 0.5 percent in 2008.
Then the 2008 economic turmoil left Spain once again with a wisp of an foreign aid budget. By the time its economy crawled closer to pre-crisis levels in 2015, its development spending had cratered to 0.12 percent of GNI.
But the idea of Spain becoming a bigger player in global development never really left the public consciousness, remaining broadly popular even during the country's worst financial straits. In 2023 the country passed a law promising to rebuild its aid agency and bump up spending to 0.7 percent of GNI by 2030 — effectively tripling its current rate.
Spain has since increased its aid budget to about 0.25 percent of its GNI, or $4.4 billion last year — roughly $490 million more than it spent the year prior at 0.24 percent of its GNI — and says it will continue to give more in the year ahead. That's more money for climate resilience projects in Morocco and Algeria, LGBTQ rights in Paraguay, and HPV vaccine campaigns across Latin America and the Caribbean.

There's little that anyone can do to bring that infrastructure back, but countries like Spain, Ireland, or South Korea have been able to uplift and increase funding to the initiatives most affected by the cuts, like Gavi, the international vaccine alliance, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Ireland also aims to increase its aid spending to 0.7 percent of GNI by 2030. It inched closer to that goal this year by boosting its development budget by about $40 million to $925 million. 'We wouldn't expect Ireland to be able to fill the USAID gap in any shape or form,' Jane-Ann McKenna, who heads Dóchas, an umbrella group for Irish development organizations, said. 'But that's where our positioning and our voice becomes more important.'
That said, foreign aid has always been about more than just charity. It's a geopolitical tool that countries have used for decades to win friends and influence people.
It's no coincidence that, according to a 2006 study, US aid increased about 59 percent to nations when they temporarily joined the UN Security Council. The birth of PEPFAR — the HIV/AIDS program that saves around a million lives per year, which makes it perhaps America's most effective ever form of foreign aid — helped boost public opinion of the US across sub-Saharan Africa. Much of Italy's recent aid budget has gone to its $6 billion Mattei Plan in Africa, which aims to collaboratively influence the continent's energy development and migration flows, but which some critics contend recreates old colonial patterns by relying too heavily on European priorities — not local expertise — to decide where the money ought to go and how its vision should take shape.
But if you take countries like Ireland and Spain at their word, their approach to foreign aid is not just about soft power anymore. These countries also have something in common that can differentiate them from other larger donors: recent histories of underdevelopment. Some of the newcomers might have been aid recipients rather than donors just a few decades ago.
South Korea received billions in foreign aid in the decades after the Korean War, which helped it grow to the point where it became the first former recipient to join OECD's forum for major aid providers in 2010. Spain's wealthier neighbors offered the country major financial support when it began integrating with Europe in the 1980s in the aftermath of the Franco dictatorship.
That dynamic can make it easier, Calleja says, to empathize with others who need aid today. (Though let's not forget that Spain once colonized much of Latin America and the Caribbean — places that now receive the bulk of Spanish foreign aid — and therefore laid the groundwork for many patterns of exploitation and inequality there that its aid now seeks to resolve.)
Ireland was never a colonizer, but was once colonized itself by Britain. That legacy, McKenna said, means that many Irish people are passionate about human rights abroad and highly supportive of overseas aid.
'We have the history of the famine and we've had conflict on the island and we've had to engage in a whole peace process ourselves,' McKenna explained. 'That's there in the background of all of our psyches.'
As these smaller players like to say, it's about 'solidarity.' Spain's own development agency's four-year plan mentions the word solidarity 84 times. It explicitly calls for a move away from the old model, where wealthy nations dictated terms to grateful recipients, and toward a more equitable and collaborative model built on shared priorities and mutual respect.
Crisis as catalyst?
Of course, not everybody is buying it.
Henry Morales is an economist and director of the Movimiento Tzuk Kim-Pop, a Guatemalan human rights group. He let out a little laugh when I asked him about Spain's solidarity plan. After all, he's seen foreign funders renege on their promises before.
He's seen European powers pledge numerous times to do more to promote climate resilience in low-income countries before watching them give up when the politics become too difficult. Spain's plan for development stresses that it aims to approach its funding priorities — like combating climate change and promoting gender equality — from a place of consistency and genuine partnership, the kind that can't be abandoned on a whim when a new government takes power.
Whether Spain's plan represents a form of global reparations or just colonialism with better PR remains to be seen, he said, but regardless, the old top-down model is clearly cracking.
Countries who receive aid now want 'a voice and a vote, so that the decisions are no longer made by a private club of the big donors, the big traditional financiers,' he said. 'But by debates and global agreements that are much more transparent and much more democratic.'
Fifty countries in the Global South now have their own agencies to exchange ideas, technical advice, and reciprocal funds for solving poverty, fighting climate change, and improving education.
Ensuring that recipients have a big say in how aid gets around is not only good for building a better, more democratic system — it can also make it much more efficient. According to Vox's previous reporting in 2022, aid programs tend to work better when people from the countries they're targeting play a big role in directing how and where the money's used. Morales thinks that kind of collaboration is the real future of aid, which he prefers to see not as charity but as 'simply the fair distribution of wealth.'
He's not the only one who thinks so. The director-general of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, called foreign aid 'a thing of the past' at a meeting with African leaders in February.
For his part, Karlan, the former USAID economist, doesn't think USAID will ever come back as the acronym or institution it once was, and although that's mostly a very bad thing, he sees a flicker of opportunity.
Still, he isn't sure if he believes that a real change to the aid paradigm is afoot. 'Solidarity strikes me as a little bit of a softer way of saying soft power,' he mused, even if countries like Spain or Ireland aren't necessarily 'looking for flyover rights for the military.'
What he is sure of is that the US is moving in a very different direction. If Spain's soft power is softening, then the United States' is calcifying into something more toxic, more transactional, and — as Karlan likes to add — less efficient than before.
'Imagine a marriage in which you never did something considerate for your partner just because you cared about them,' he said. Instead, everything is a negotiation. 'That isn't a healthy relationship. What we're risking is losing these long-term relationships, those long-term friendships.'
By the time the US is ready to reopen the door on them, it may find a world that has already moved on.

The aide Jian G. entered the courtroom slowly, said Moore, wearing a mask to conceal his face from the cameras. "His demeanor belied the gravity of the charges he faces," said Moore. The court heard that G., in his role as an aide to far-right AfD politician Maximilian Krah, had gathered classified information about EU issues related to China, as well as details about the private lives of AfD leaders. All of that was then passed on to employees of the Chinese intelligence service. Addressing the court, G.'s lawyer said the timing of his client's arrest, shortly before European elections in 2024, had the whiff of political involvement. In a statement read out in court, co-defendant Jaqi X told judges that she had had an affair with G. around 2015 shortly after moving to Germany. She said he was "obsessed with money" and described himself to her as someone "who lived in the darkness". After their romance broke down, they remained friends. Around 2022, Jaqi X is alleged to have began passing G. details about German arms deliveries to Israel and Ukraine through her job at an airport. Only one in 10 German residents in the 15-24 bracket — Destatis At the end of last year, only 10% of Germany's population consisted of people aged between 15 and 24, figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) show. The figure represents a record low that has not sunk further mostly because of the immigration of mostly young people following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. If that immigration had not occurred, the proportion of young people in the German population would be even lower, at 8.5%, Destatis said. The highest proportion of young people, 20.7%, was to be found among those who were born in Germany to parents who both immigrated. The city-states of Bremen and Hamburg and the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg had the most residents in the young age bracket at the end of 2024, but even there, the highest proportion was just over 11%. The former East German states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt had the lowest proportion of young people at just under 9%. The figure puts Germany below the average of 10.7% across all 27 EU member states. In the bloc, Ireland has the highest proportion of 15 to 24-year-olds at 12.6%, while Bulgaria has the lowest at 9.2%. Nuremberg zoo director receives death threats over baboon killings The director of Nuremberg Zoo, Dag Encke, has received numerous death threats, 10 of them concrete, after it became known that baboons from the zoo had been killed because of overcrowding and fed to lions and tigers. The threats came via social media, e-mail and by letter, the zoo said. Some of the threats were also directed at the deputy director of the zoo or at staff generally. The zoo said it was taking measures to protect its employees and that all concrete threats had been reported to police. A police spokeswoman said that 170 posts, messages or letters were being examined. The zoo is also facing more than 350 official complaints to the public prosecutor's office about the killing of the animals. A spokeswoman for the office said it was looking into whether the culling occurred for reasons that can be justified under Germany's animal protection law. Ukrainian refugees prefer work to welfare — German study Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion prioritize job opportunities over welfare benefits when choosing a country to relocate to, a study indicates. "The prospect of a position that matches their own qualification and a higher level of salary have a much stronger effect on the decision of refugees on what country they go to than social welfare or other state benefits," wrote the authors of the study by the Munich-based Ifo Institute for Economic Research. The presence of friends or families in a destination country were also more important to Ukrainian refugees than that country's geographical proximity to Ukraine, the study suggested. The results from the study come as debate continues in Germany over cutting welfare to recipients from Ukraine, with notably conservative Bavarian Premier Markus Söder calling for Ukrainians to received lower benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, as opposed to the citizen's allowance that they are currently granted. The citizen's allowance or "Bürgergeld" in Germany is a state welfare benefit given to those with little or no income to ensure a minimum standard of living. Yvonne Giesing, the deputy head of the Ifo Center for Migration and Development Economics, said the study results indicated that the welfare debate was of little importance, while adding that "cutting state benefits could also have long-term negative effects on integration." Baboons fed to lions and tigers after zoo culling Nuremberg Zoo killed 12 baboons due to overcrowding and dismembered six of them before feeding them to predators — removing heads, hands, and feet. Nutrias becoming ever more widespread in Germany — hunting association The South American nutria, a semiaquatic rodent that is considered an invasive species in Europe, is continuing to spread within Germany, according to the German Hunting Association (DJV). The animal was found in 35% of 23,000 monitored hunting districts in 2023, the DJV said, double the figure in 2015. The highest presence was found in the city-state of Bremen, at 93%, a sixfold increase over 2015, and in Hamburg at 73%. Nutrias were found living in 60% of hunting districts in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, while 55% of districts in Lower Saxony and 50% of those in Saxony-Anhalt had populations of the rodent, which the DJV says undermines riverbanks and dikes with its burrowing and destroys reed belts. The beaver-like, usually crepuscular or nocturnal creatures are also known to transmit diseases to humans and other animals, mainly through water contamination. They have also been known to attack humans and dogs when cornered. The DJV called for the nutria to be included in German national hunting legislation. Most states already have a hunting season for the animal or special permits. "Owing to illegal feeding, climatic advantages and hunting limits, nutrias can now be found particularly frequently in urban areas, where they often become active during daytime as well and have a great potential for reproducing," the DJV said. Nutria populations mostly have their origins in animals that escaped from farms where they are kept for their fur. Ruling expected over cola-mix bottle design dispute A German court is expected to give its verdict on Tuesday afternoon on whether spirits maker Berentzen copied rival drink producer Paulaner in its design of a cola-orange soft-drink bottle. Paulaner, one of Germany's top beer producers, claims Berentzen copied the colorful wave design used on bottles holding its "Spezi" cola-mix for Berentzen's Mio Mio Cola+Orange soft drink. The case is potentially worth €250,000 ($289,000). Berentzen has argued that soft drinks commonly employ colorful packaging and that its design does not feature waves but circular shapes. Paulaner, which claims the design infringes trademark law, won a similar case against beverage maker Karlsberg in March. Sick days on the up as Germany sniffled and sneezed in 2025 The first half of 2025 saw a big rise in the number of people calling in sick to work amid a surge in colds and flus, according to an analysis by German health insurance company DAK. The number of working days missed because of respiratory illness rose by 13% in comparison with the same period last year, with January and February the months with the most sick days registered. The figures from DAK showed that on average, 54 of 1,000 employees it insures were written off sick every day from January to June, slightly down on the same period in 2024. Respiratory illnesses were the cause of 22.4% of the sick days, while mental illnesses such as depression, along with muscular and skeletal disorders such as back pain, accounted for 17%. Most of the people absent for reason of illness worked in the fields of aged or child care, while those in IT-related professions called in sick the least. The analysis used data on sick days from 2.25 million people insured with DAK. Harsh migration policies showing benefits — Berlin's governing mayor The stricter policies on migration recently introduced by Germany are starting to show their effects, according to Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner, the head of government in the city-state. "We are seeing a significant relief in the influx of refugees," saod Wegner, a member of the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), to which Chancellor Friedrich Merz also belongs. He told the DPA news agency that twice the number of people were currently leaving Berlin than that of people arriving, with the city now having some 6,000 vacant beds for refugees. "The pressure in Berlin has eased a little," he said. Wegner said he hoped the recently introduced policies would help free up capacities to implement integration measures targeting refugees who have received permission to stay in the country. The German capital took in almost 32,000 refugees in 2023, including more than 15,000 from Ukraine. In 2024, new arrivals dropped to just above 21,000 and 6,089 were registered in the first half of 2025. Between 2022 and 2025, the costs of housing and supporting refugees in Berlin nearly doubled to €2.24 billion ($2.58 billion). China espionage trial to open in Dresden A court in the eastern city of Dresden is to begin its trial of two people suspected of spying for China, with one of the defendants a former assistant to a lawmaker from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The former AfD aide, identified only as Jian G. under German privacy laws, is charged with providing information to Chinese intelligence from 2002, including during a period when he worked for Maximilian Krah, at the time a member of the European Parliament for the far-right populist party. Prosecutors in Dresden accuse Jian G. of passing on information on debates and decisions at the European Parliament, along with sensitive documents. It is also possible that information collected by Jian G. includes sensitive details about the workings of the AfD itself, the revelation of which could prove an embarrassment to the party. However, Krah has told news magazine Der Spiegel that he never discussed certain internal problems with the defendant. The second defendant, named only as Jaqi X., worked at a company that provided Leipzig airport with logistics services. She is accused of helping Jian G. access information on flights and passengers, especially to do with the transport of defense equipment. Krah himself is under separate investigation on suspicion of money laundering and corruption partly connected with firms linked to Jian G. He was also at the center of a scandal over remarks that seemed to downplay the seriousness of the crimes committed by the Nazis' notorious SS but nonetheless currently sits as an AfD member of the German lower house, or Bundestag. Trump plans to "take over" Gaza aid effort, U.S. officials say

Special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump discussed plans for the U.S. to significantly increase its role in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza in a meeting Monday evening at the White House, according to two U.S. officials and an Israeli official with knowledge of the issue. Why it matters: Negotiations for a ceasefire are stuck, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is moving towards significantly expanding the war. U.S. officials are concerned about more bloodshed but have yet to firmly object. The new food aid plan Trump promised last week is also not yet finalized. Driving the news: Witkoff flew in from Miami to meet Trump for dinner on Monday, the sources say, fresh off a visit last week to Israel and Gaza. A U.S. official said it was decided that the Trump administration will "take over" management of the humanitarian effort in Gaza because Israel isn't handling it adequately. The official didn't say what the U.S. role would actually entail, but said Gulf countries like Qatar will contribute funds, while Jordan and Egypt will also likely be involved. The White House didn't respond to requests for comment. Friction point: Trump is "not thrilled" about the idea of the U.S. taking charge, "but it kind of has to happen," the official said. "There doesn't seem to be another way." "The starvation problem in Gaza is getting worse. Donald Trump does not like that. He does not want babies to starve. He wants mothers to be able to nurse their children. He's becoming fixated on that," the official continued. A second U.S. official said the administration will be careful not to get dragged too deep into the Gaza crisis. "The president doesn't want to see the U.S. being the only country throwing money at this problem. It's a global problem. And he's been tasking Witkoff and others to make sure everyone is stepping up, our European friends and our Arab friends," the official said. The other side: Israel supports the increased U.S. role, according to both U.S. officials and an Israeli official. The Israeli official confirmed the U.S. planned to take the lead on the humanitarian issue in order to increase the level of aid coming into Gaza. "They are going to spend a lot of money in order to help us significantly improving the humanitarian situation so that it will be less of an issue," the Israeli official said. Behind the scenes: Some in the administration are growing worried over Netanyahu's proposed expansion of the war. Netanyahu raised that possibility during Witkoff's visit last week and has discussed it with the White House this week too, an Israeli official told Axios. Israeli officials have claimed they're totally aligned with Washington. Zoom in: The proposed expansion is controversial not just because it entails occupying the entire Gaza Strip, including areas like Gaza City, but also because it would mean moving into zones where Israel believes hostages are being held. The Israel Defense Forces have been reluctant to attack those areas for fear of accidentally killing hostages. IDF Chief of Staff Gen. Eyal Zamir and other senior security officials have warned Netanyahu against such an operation. According to Israeli officials, Zamir told Netanyahu such a move would endanger the hostages and could lead to Israeli military rule in Gaza with full responsibility over two million Palestinians. What to watch: Nevertheless, the Israeli security cabinet is expected to hold a meeting on Thursday and approve the plan for the full occupation of Gaza. An Israeli official claimed Netanyahu is working to "free the hostages through military defeat of Hamas" because he believes "Hamas is not interested in a deal." At the same time, humanitarian aid will be brought into areas outside the combat zones "and as much as possible to areas outside Hamas' control," the official said.

That's what we're doing? Yet there's a surprising staying power to the story, in a way that suggests there's more to it than meets the eye. Maybe it's because of the ad's surreal interplay with Sweeney's blonde bombshell image, revealing how much weight that symbol still carries today and the ideas it puts forward about sexuality, race, and gender. In case you missed it: Last week, American Eagle released a series of jeans ads with the tag line, 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' The campaign centers on a pun, a play on genes/jeans. As Kyndall Cunningham put it for Vox, the big question was: 'Are we supposed to want pants or Aryan features?' The outrage machine roared to life and has churned nonstop ever since then. Progressives denounced the ads as Nazi propaganda while anti-woke types mocked liberals for calling people Nazis if they think Sydney Sweeney is hot. By the end of the weekend, online sleuths had determined that Sweeney was a registered Republican as of 2024, and President Donald Trump reinvigorated the take cycle when he spoke out in support of the actress. It's all quite a lot to lay on a jeans ad built around a bad pun and a cute young actress. Yet it's not even the first time that Sydney Sweeney and her body have become the center of a culture war. Last year, conservative commenters declared that Sweeney had 'killed woke' when she hosted Saturday Night Live in a low-cut dress. In 2022, Sweeney was caught in a firestorm after she was photographed next to MAGA-hat-wearing family members at her mother's birthday party. Lots of celebrities have been dinged for their political opinions since Trump was first elected in 2016, but there's something about Sweeney and the way we talk about her that seems to attract political scrutiny. That something might very well be the potent symbols embedded in her 'great genes.' Her blonde hair, her blue eyes, her curves, the way she presents all of the above to the camera. Sydney Sweeney has spent most of her career trying to embody the American archetype of the blonde bombshell — and that's a role that comes with baggage. It's a highly charged encapsulation of American fantasies and fears about white femininity: what a nice white lady should be, and what we are afraid she might be. How Hollywood built a bombshell 'The biggest misconception about me is that I am a dumb blonde with big tits,' Sweeney told Glamour UK in 2023. Then the punchline: 'I'm naturally brunette.' Blonde bombshells have a long and storied history. Hollywood's first, Jean Harlow, was also a bottle blonde. Beloved for her big-eyed comic timing and her easy, expressive charm, Harlow first broke out in the 1930s after Hollywood makeup artist Max Factor developed a platinum blonde hair color for her. Harlow would maintain her hair color with a weekly application of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia to the roots up until her tragic death in 1937 at the age of 26. If Harlow built the bombshell persona, Marilyn Monroe perfected it. Monroe too was a natural brunette, and she too went to Max Factor, who used an updated version of Harlow's platinum formula to create Monroe's signature look. Monroe's legacy would become her image as the blonde bombshell, the woman with sex appeal so potent it landed like a thrown bomb. The bombshell's blondeness classically means that the bombshell is white. In part because of the moment in which the archetype emerged, there is a kind of retro all-American pluck to her look: teased hair, big, blue eyes, tanned white skin that will pop in Technicolor. Her blondeness, powerful and artificial, seems to amplify her whiteness, almost to burlesque it. It's part of her exclusive and racialized desirability: The bombshell is the most attractive woman in the world, and she is firmly, WASPily white. The bombshell is hypersexual but innocent; powerful but naive. She is both an empowering image of feminine soft power and a regressive conservative ideal: unapologetically sexual in a way that plays against puritanical norms; at the same time girlish, compliant, unthreatening. The power of her sexuality becomes unthreatening because the blonde bombshell is too stupid and naive to ever use it against a watching man. That's part of the joke of Sweeney's 'biggest misconception about me' line: The blonde bombshell is supposed to be dumb. It's part of what makes her hot. It's also part of why the jeans/genes ad inspires such a strange mixture of glee and discomfort in its watching audience. When Sweeney lingers on her blondeness and her curves to evoke the bombshell, she's invoking a powerful archetype. The blonde bombshell comes with an association of retro '50s Americana that's comforting for an audience that imagines that America peaked in the postwar decades. For another audience, less powerful than the nostalgia is the implied threat that comes with it: This is what good genes look like, and if you deviate from the norm, you can be punished. To be clear, there's no reason to think Sweeney is clued into any of these malevolent implications when she shows off her curves in a jeans ad. She likes to nod to Marilyn Monroe in her styling, in the same way that lots of actresses celebrated for their sex appeal do.
