Elephants run amok during Ahmedabad Rath Yatra, chaos erupts among devotees

The incident occurred around 10:15 am on Friday in the congested Khadia area, where the Rath Yatra was making its way through packed lanes. According to The Indian Express, at least two people were injured during the commotion.
Officials told the publication that the disturbance began when a decorated elephant suddenly broke away from the procession and ran in the opposite direction. One or two more elephants also veered off route, adding to the panic among devotees.
The Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad is known for its elaborate scale, featuring 18 decorated elephants, around 100 trucks, devotional music troupes (bhajan mandlis), and 30 akhadas. The 16-kilometre procession route is lined with lakhs of devotees each year.
This year's Yatra included trucks transformed into thematic tableaux, showcasing diverse cultural and religious elements.
Rath Yatra: AI-powered surveillance deployed for crowd control
With an estimated 14 to 15 lakh people attending, authorities have deployed nearly 23,800 security personnel across the city. For the first time, an AI-powered surveillance system has been introduced to monitor crowd movement in real-time and prevent stampede-like situations, according to an official statement.
The new system is part of heightened security efforts to ensure a smooth and safe viewing experience for devotees witnessing the annual procession of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.

Cops overhaul positioning, increase number of CCTV cameras on Grand Road
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Bahuda Yatra and Suna Besha ceremonies in Puri, state police have reworked the positioning of AI-enabled CCTV cameras on the 3km Grand Road between Jagannath and Gundicha temples. The overhaul is part of the revised crowd control plan following the recent stampede outside Gundicha Temple that left three devotees dead, police sources said. "Supplementary artificial intelligence-powered surveillance cameras have been strategically implemented at additional locations, complementing the pre-existing monitoring infrastructure," said additional director general (ADG) Dayal Gangwar, who oversees operations at the integrated command and control centre (ICCC) for Rath Yatra. Sources said new Puri SP Pinak Mishra drafted an additional list of critical locations where camera presence is essential for effective surveillance on crowd density. While at least 70 cameras were already in place on the Grand Road, the number has now been increased to 110. Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation expeditiously installed the additional surveillance cameras on Wednesday. The corporation also conducted thorough inspections of existing cameras, recommending replacements for substandard units to maintain optimal surveillance capabilities. "Technical clarification regarding the quality of camera footage can only be provided by the designated service provider. We encountered certain operational challenges stemming from adverse weather conditions, compromised internet connectivity and power interruptions. Nevertheless, these impediments were expeditiously addressed," Gangwar told TOI. Responding to concerns regarding alleged poor functioning of the surveillance system, Gangwar said, "Our response mechanism consistently ensured immediate transmission of crowd density notifications to relevant police authorities for appropriate intervention whenever such alerts were generated through our surveillance network." During Tuesday's security assessment in Puri, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasised the paramount importance of real-time crowd density evaluation and swift operational response. The CM directed DGP Y B Khurania regarding the deployment of additional personnel, particularly those possessing specialised expertise in crowd management and traffic regulation protocols, during Sandhya Darshan (July 4), Bahuda Yatra (July 5), Suna Besha (July 6), and Niladri Bije (July 8) — all of which traditionally draw hundreds of thousands of devotees.

Case filed against electricity dept officials after farmer dies of electrocution
Agency: PTI Noida, Jul 2 (PTI) A case was filed against electricity department officials at the Dankaur police station after a farmer died due to electrocution in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Wednesday. Munendra Kumar Singh, Inspector-in-Charge of the Dankaur police station, said that a person named Kailash lodged stating that his uncle Satish died on Tuesday after receiving an electric shock from a transformer installed near their field in Daula Rajapur village. He added that his cousin sisters were also seriously injured in the incident. Kailash said that the electricity department had installed a transformer on the edge of Satish's field despite objections from the family. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against the Executive Engineer, Sub-Divisional Officer and other electricity workers of Mandi Shyam Nagar Electricity Sub-Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including death due to negligence.
