Revealed: Cristiano Ronaldo's 'message to Diogo Jota's wife and parents' after the Liverpool star's tragic death - before missing Portugal team-mate's funeral
The Portugal legend is said to have spoken with Rute Cardoso as well as Jota's parents to assure the family of his support.
That's according to Portuguese outlet Record, who also claim he told the family he would stay away from the joint funeral of Jota and brother Andre Silva to avoid causing a media circus.
Ronaldo's absence from the joint funeral of Jota and his footballer brother Andre was causing shockwaves in their homeland on Saturday.
Portugal's most capped player and team captain was expected to fly to Gondomar near Porto to pay his last respects alongside Jota's club and country team-mates at a wake on Friday and the funeral mass this morning.
But the 40-year-old dad-of-three was a no-show at both - with a leading Majorcan newspaper saying he was holidaying on the island and had been spotted in two upmarket destinations on board his £5.5million 88-feet long Azimut Grande yacht, which boasts five luxury cabins and six bathrooms.
Liverpool team-mates, Manchester City 's Bernardo Silva and Manchester United full back Diogo Dalot, both Portuguese national team players, were among the footballers who packed into the church on Saturday morning - the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar.
Portugal internationals Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, seen in tears on Friday night before their Club World Cup clash in Orlando, also made it to the church on time along with Portugal manager Roberto Martinez who has been in the States as a member of the FIFA Club World Cup Technical Study Group.
Portuguese journalist Antonio Ribeiro Cristovao said shortly before the mass began: 'He is the captain of the Portugal squad. Many expected he would attend.
'Diogo Jota was part of the team. Maybe there are some reasons we don't know.
'If he doesn't attend, he has to explain the reason. He has that responsibility. He is the captain.'
Sports journalist and commentator Luis Cristovao called his absence 'inexplicable' as the funeral mass got underway without Ronaldo, saying: 'Being inexplicable, any justification will fall short of the shortcoming he committed with his absence.'
And TV sports commentator Pedro Fatela, added of the Al-Nassr striker's no-show: 'This absence will be much discussed. There must be justifications in the coming days.
'We will know why Cristiano wasn't able to travel to Gondomar to be present in this moment, but he is the captain.
Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson, Alexis Mac Allister and James Milner leave the funeral of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar
'All of us were expecting, as all coaches and players were there, to have the captain side by side with his teammates.'
A football fan commenting on Ronaldo's no-show on X said: 'For Cristiano Ronaldo not to interrupt his holidays to appear at the funeral is something inadmissible as a friend and as Portugal's captain. It was the least he should have done.'
Referencing Ronaldo's emotional Instagram post after he learned about Diogo and brother Andre Silva's car crash deaths on the A-52 highway near Zamora close to Spain's north-west border with Portugal in the early hours of Thursday morning, he added: 'It's not just messages on social media that count, it's not just money that counts.'
Another Portuguese X user called Flavia, hinting Ronaldo must have decided he didn't want to be the focus of fans and well-wishers and detract from the funeral by attending, said: 'People are already criticising Cristiano Ronaldo for not showing up at the wake and funeral.
'Folks, I don't know if you realise what Cristiano Ronaldo means to Gondomar.
'I understand it would be good for our captain to attend the funeral but we can't forget who Ronaldo is.
'I understand why he doesn't show up.'
A follower responding to her message agreed saying: 'The problem is a lot of people have no respect and would have gone to have a chance of seeing Ronaldo and not for Diogo.'
Local reports Ronaldo had been spotted on his luxury yacht in Majorca first emerged yesterday evening on the eve of the funerals.
He posted an emotional tribute to the Liverpool winger and his footballer brother Andre Silva when he learned they had died in the early hours of Thursday after crashing in a 200mph £180,000 Lamborghini Huracan following a suspected tyre blowout.
The siblings were on their way to the Spanish port city of Santander so Diogo, who had been advised against air travel following lung surgery, could take a ferry to the UK and head on to Liverpool.
Reporting former Manchester United frontman Ronaldo had been spotted relaxing in the Balearic Islands, respected Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora said late on Friday: 'Cristiano Ronaldo has chosen Majorca again as a destination to enjoy his summer vacation.'
It went on to report the Portuguese star had been seen in the upmarket resort of Illetes on Majorca's south-west coastline and the port of Andratx on board his £5.5m yacht.
And it added: 'Although on this occasion he hasn't been seen outside of his yacht, it's normal for the footballer to take advantage of his stay on the island to train, go to high-class restaurants and enjoy family life.'
Ronaldo last holidayed in Majorca with his family three years ago.
An employee of the footballer's, thought to have been one of his bodyguards, was injured during the break when the sports car he was driving came off the road and smashed into a stone wall protecting a house near Ronaldo's holiday home.
The Bugatti he crashed was one of two cars the former Manchester United frontman had ferried over to the Spanish island for his sunshine break.
Ronaldo was reportedly in another vehicle in a small convoy with his loved ones when his employee came off the road after they left their rented family home for a day out.
He was said at the time to have ordered other staff to remain at the scene while they continued their journey.
Virgil Van Dijk, who held a flower arrangement in the shape of Diogo's shirt with the number 20 and Andy Robertson, who carried a red shirt bearing Andre's number 30
The badly-damaged Bugatti was later driven away on a tow-truck under a blue tarpaulin.
The owner of the Majorcan house hit by Cristiano Ronaldo's sports car subsequently said he had pledged to pay for the damage.
The unnamed homeowner revealed he was promised compensation after turning up at his rented mansion to try to speak to him.
In his Instagram tribute to newly-married Diogo and his brother Ronaldo said: 'Doesn't make any sense. Just now we were together in the national team, just now you were married.
'To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre We will all miss you.'
Diogo Jota's long-time agent Jorge Mendes attended yesterday's wake after travelling to Spain to spend time with the footballer's heartbroken loved ones including his widow Rute Cardoso, mum to their three children, while they tried to repatriate his body.

Beloved high-school soccer coach and wife become latest Texas flood victims... with their two children still missing
A high-school soccer coach and his wife were among those who died in the devastating floods that swept through Texas on Friday, it has been announced. Reece Zunker, a teacher and soccer coach at Tivy High School in Kerrville, and his wife Paula, who was formerly a teacher at the school, tragically lost their lives after the Guadalupe River in Kerr County flooded and surged by up to 30 feet above its usual water level in the early hours of July 4. The couple's two young children, Lyle and Holland, were both still missing as of Sunday afternoon. 'It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our beloved teachers, Reece Zunker, and his wife, Paula, who tragically lost their lives in the flash flood on July 4th,' the Kerrville Independent School District said in a statement. 'Reece was a passionate educator and a beloved soccer coach. His unwavering dedication to our students, athletes, and the Tivy community touched countless lives and will never be forgotten. 'Paula, a former Tivy teacher, also left a lasting mark on our community. The care and impact she shared with her students continue to be felt, even years later.' — kerrvilleisd (@kerrvilleisd) July 6, 2025 The Tivy boy's soccer team also paid tribute to Reece, who taught at the school for 12 years, describing him as a 'leader and inspiration'. 'Coach Reece Zunker was not just a soccer coach he was a mentor, teacher and a role model for our Kerrville kids,' the team said in a post on Facebook. 'He rebuilt the soccer program and left a legacy. His passion for his players, students, co-workers, community and his family will never be forgotten.' School officials in Texas urged the community to keep the Zunker family 'in your prayers' with Lyle and Holland still missing. According to Fox News, they were vacationing at a river house in Hunt, near Camp Mystic - where several children are still unaccounted for. Reece's last post on Facebook, which he made on June 15, reveals that the couple were celebrating their 11th anniversary last month. He wrote alongside a photo of them together: 'Late delivery, but it's because we were busy having a great night! Here's to 11 years and many more to come! Love you babe! Happy Anniversary! The devastating floods have claimed the lives of at least 82 people, including five young girls aged between eight and nine whose summer camp - Camp Mystic - was swept away. At the time of writing rescuers have found the bodies of 40 adults and 28 children. The wife of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has confirmed the tragic loss of a family member as a result of the devastating Texas floods. Clark's wife, Tavia, revealed that Janie Hunt - a young cousin in the family - was part of the Camp Mystic campers who died. Taking to Instagram, she wrote: 'Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives — including a precious little Hunt cousin, along with several friend's little girls. 'How do we trust a God who is supposed to be good, all knowing and all powerful, but who allows such terrible things to happen — even to children? 'That is a sacred and tender question — and one the Bible doesn't shy away from. Scripture is filled with the cries of those whose hearts have been shattered, who still wrestle to trust the same God they believe allowed the pain.' A total of 11 girls are missing from Camp Mystic after the rushing waters destroyed the all-girls private Christian summer camp.

Liverpool have already made six new signings this summer and there could be plenty more incomings and outgoings before the transfer window slams shut on September 1 Liverpool have enjoyed a busy summer so far, bringing in the likes of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili as Arne Slot looks to guide the Reds to another Premier League title win. There have also been a number of outgoings, with Trent Alexander-Arnold joining Real Madrid, Jarell Quansah making the move to Bayer Leverkusen and Caoimhin Kelleher signing for Brentford. And there could be plenty more incomings and outgoings before the window slams shut on September 1. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer news and rumours from in and around Anfield... Fofana's asking price According to a report from the Independent, Liverpool target Malick Fofana is valued at around €60m (£51.5m) by Lyon. The report states that Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Napoli, RB Leipzig, Nottingham Forest and Fulham are all interested in the 20-year-old after he produced 17 goal contributions in 41 games last season. The report states that Lyon are hopeful the price will be driven up due to the amount of interest in Fofana. The French side do need to sell as their financial problems have seen them relegated from Ligue 1, although the club are appealing the decision. Diaz speaks out Luis Diaz has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer, with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich said to be interested in signing the winger. And Diaz has now spoken out about the rumours, telling Colombian broadcaster WinSports: "It's not known yet, we're talking with the board. We're comfortable with where I am, and we'll have to see." However, it has previously been reported that Liverpool have do not want to sell the winger and have already rejected an approach from Bayern. Diaz scored 17 goals and provided eight assists across all competitions last season. Zubimendi joins Arsenal Arsenal have signed midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, just one year after he rejected the chance to join Liverpool. Zubimendi was reluctant to leave his boyhood club last year and the 26-year-old has now revealed why he has chosen Arsenal. "This is a huge moment in my career," he told the Arsenal website. "It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come."

Wimbledon star forced to borrow shorts from her coach after breaking strict rule
The All England Club has long had a strict dress code, and Wimbledon star Anna Kournikova famously fell foul of one of its rules It's not just on Centre Court where you can get in trouble for breaking strict dress code rules at Wimbledon - it can happen on the practice court too! Infamously, Anna Kournikova once had to borrow a pair of shorts from her coach during a practice session after violating the All England Club's strict dress code. At SW19, players are almost always required to wear all-white. There have of course been exceptions. For example, this year, players were allowed to wear black armbands to pay tribute to tragic Liverpool star Diogo Jota following his death on Thursday. But mostly, players have largely had to wear nothing but white on court down the years. And that's something which, before the 2002 tournament had even begun, Russia ace Kournikova fell foul of. At the time she was ranked No.54 in the world and was competing at SW19 for the final time in her career. But she found herself reprimanded for turning up to practice in a pair of black shorts. Before she could even step onto the court, Kournikova was sternly informed by tournament officials that she needed to change her attire. Unfortunately, she did not have a pair of white shorts on her person and had to resort to another option. Thus, she borrowed a pair from the legendary late coach Nick Bollettieri in order to comply with the rules and stay on court. In 1963, rules were implemented requiring all competitors to dress 'predominantly in white'. Then 32 years later, the wording was altered to 'almost entirely white.' This rule applies both during matches and on the practice court. Kournikova isn't the only one who has skirted the regulations and she did make sure to don all-white for her opening match against Tatiana Panova - although, she ended up losing in three sets. She did reach the women's doubles semi-finals that year however, before falling to eventual champions Serena and Venus Williams. Andre Agassi famously skipped the tournament from 1988 to 1990 in protest of the all-white clothing rule, later expressing in his autobiography: "I resent rules, but especially arbitrary rules. Why must I wear white? I don't want to wear white. "Why should it matter to these people what I wear? Above all, I took offence at being barred and blocked and made to feel unwanted." Nick Kyrgios caused a stir when he stepped onto Centre Court in 2022 sporting a red cap and red trainers, and he has recently urged the tournament to scrap the all-white dress code to allow players more freedom to express their individuality at the Grand Slam.
