Chidambaram slams new criminal laws as ‘wasteful cut-and-paste', says they've created confusion
P Chidambaram
on Wednesday said the exercise of enactment of the three
new criminal laws
was a "waste" and has only created confusion in the
administration of justice
among judges, lawyers and the police.
Chidambaram also claimed the new Acts are an overwhelmingly 'cut and paste' exercise, with a few new provisions added.
His remarks came a day after Union Home Minister
Amit Shah
termed the enactment of the three new criminal laws as the biggest reform in independent India and said they will make the judicial process process not only affordable and accessible but also simpler, time-bound and transparent.

Shah stressed that the Narendra Modi government framed the new laws --
Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
(BNS), the
Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita
(BNSS) and the
Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam
(BSA) -- to ensure that all rights of citizens are protected and no criminal goes unpunished.
Hitting out at the government, Chidambaram said it has claimed repeatedly that the three Criminal Law Bills, now Acts, are the biggest reforms since Independence, but "nothing can be farther from the truth".

"I had sent a dissent note to the Parliamentary Standing Committee that examined the three Bills, and it is part of the Report tabled in Parliament," the former home minister said in X.
"In my dissent note, after comparing section by section the IPC, CrPC and Indian Evidence Act with the corresponding new Bill, I had asserted that: 90-95% of the IPC, 95% of the CrPC and 99% of the Evidence Act, have been cut and pasted in the corresponding new Bill," he said.
Chidambaram's assertion in his dissent note was not challenged in Parliament or elsewhere.
"I maintain that the new Bills, now Acts, are overwhelmingly a 'cut and paste' exercise, with a few new provisions added -- some acceptable and some not acceptable," he said.
"The whole exercise was a waste and has only created confusion in the the administration of justice among judges, lawyers and the police," Chidambaram said.
Addressing an event marking one year of the rolling out of the three criminal laws, the BNS, BNSS and the BSA, Shah had said since all processes are online, nothing will be overlooked and justice will be delivered on time.
"These laws are going to transform the criminal justice system in the country significantly. I assure all the citizens of India that it will take a maximum of three years for the full implementation of the new laws. I can also confidently say that anyone can get justice up to the Supreme Court within three years of filing an FIR," he had said.
The BNS, BNSS and the BSA replaced the colonial-era
Indian Penal Code
, the
Code of Criminal Procedure
and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872, respectively. The new laws came into effect on July 1, 2024.

Government blocks 25 OTT platforms for obscenity
This is a representational AI image (Pic credit: Lexica) NEW DELHI: In a sweeping crackdown on digital obscenity, the ministry of information and broadcasting has directed internet service providers to block public access to 25 OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT and Desiflix, for hosting sexually explicit, obscene, and, in some cases, pornographic content. The directive, issued on July 23, also covers 26 websites and 14 mobile applications associated with these platforms. The action follows repeated warnings to these platforms and comes after consultations with the ministries of home affairs, electronics and IT, the department of legal affairs, industry bodies like FICCI and CII, and experts on women and child rights. Sources said the decision was triggered by growing public grievances and the platforms' persistent violation of IT Rules, 2021, and Indian obscenity laws. Platforms like Ullu and ALTT had been flagged by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in 2024 for content containing sexual innuendo and nudity with little or no narrative context. Ullu had to remove its series House Arrest in May 2025 after govt intervention. A similar crackdown took place in 2024 when 18 OTT platforms, such as Dreams Films, Rabbit, Hunters, and Prime Play, were blocked. In many cases, government officials said, the content violated sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of IPC, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Watching Videos Can Boost Your Income TheDaddest Undo Former Central Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, who heads the 'Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation', lauded the govt for banning the applications and websites, calling it a "digital surgical strike". "We congratulate the Centre for its courageous first step in this dharma yuddha (righteous war) to protect the soul of our nation. This ban is a victory for every Indian family," he said. Mahurkar added in a statement, "However, this is only the first battle. A one-time ban is not enough. We need systemic legal and technological reforms to permanently safeguard our cultural values and make Digital India a truly value-based and safe space for our children."

Five arrested for bulk booking of online passes for Trimbakeshwar darshan and selling them at high rates
Nashik: Five people were arrested by Trimbakeshwar police for allegedly booking online paid darshan passes for Trimbakeshwar temple in large quantities and then selling them at exorbitant rates to pilgrims visiting the twelve jyotirlingas. Inspector Mahesh Kulkarni said an FIR was registered with the police on Thursday regarding some people purchasing Rs 200 denomination passes issued by Shri Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust in bulk and then selling them to the pilgrims at exorbitant rates. "An FIR was registered with the police regarding the sale of such online passes to the pilgrims at very high rates. The police investigated the matter and found that there were five people staying in and around Trimbakeshwar involved in the act and arrested them late Thursday night," said Kulkarni. The paid darshan passes are issued across the counter as well as through the online process. The officer said that the police tracked the tickets, mobile numbers, and email IDs that revealed the purchase of the darshan passes in bulk by a group of five people using fake names and Aadhaar numbers. "The passes carry the names of pass holders. These are verified by the QR scanner at the entrance. The sellers of these passes inform the pilgrims the names they need to tell the security persons at the gates, if they are asked," the officer said. Police have filed charges under Sections 318 (4), 112, and 336 (3) of BNS against the accused who sold them for Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 each. Police claimed that five people sold at least 1,648 passes and pocketed the proceeds without sharing them with the trust. The five arrested are Dileep Jhole and Sudam Badade, both residents of Pegalwadi, Samadhan Chothe and Manohar Shevare, both from Rokadwadi, and Shivraj Aher, residing near Niranjani Akhada -- all in and around Trimbakeshwar town.
