Differing paths for Chris Waller's Queensland Derby trio
The master trainer has won the race on three occasions, including with Kovalica and Kukeracha in the past four years and will saddle up three runners, headed by filly Belle Detelle.
A three-quarter sister to Verry Elleegant, Belle Detelle is aiming to become just the third filly to win the Queensland Derby this century, with Waller preferring the true mile-and-a-half journey over the 2200m of the Queensland Oaks.
She finished sixth to stablemate Imperalist in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben on May 17, a run Waller said was more than acceptable given the circumstances.
'It was solid, it was a very wet track,' Waller said.
'She got a long way back and she finished off well. The barrier draw (is important), whether it's Eagle Farm or Doomben, doesn't matter where you're at.'
Unfortunately for connections, Belle Detelle has drawn barrier 21, which will come into 17 of 18 if emergencies fail to get a run, with James McDonald booked to ride.
While tactics remain a query for Belle Detelle, Waller confirmed Imperalist would be ridden similarly to last start when leading throughout to take the Rough Habit Plate at $61 odds.
'Imperialist surprised us a little bit. In the Australian Derby we went back to last and he never made an impact so we just sort of formed the opinion that he might not stay.'
'I asked Tommy Berry after the Rough Habit and he said 'no, he'll get further' so obviously ridden close to the speed the other day, we'll ride him similarly on Saturday.'
The trio is rounded out by last-start Ipswich winner Existential Bob, a gelding by Ocean Park that Waller himself owns alongside wife Stephanie
'Existential Bob won at Ipswich the other day. He's come up here to run in the Derby and he'll stay. He's by Ocean Park, he needs to improve but he's in there (with a chance) as well,' Waller said.
At $7, Belle Detelle is the second favourite in an open market headed by Statuario at $5, who finished second to Femminile ($8) in the South Australian Derby on May 3.

Hutchings, 30, told stewards he struggled with his weight after being flooded in at his home in the lead-up. He was also under financial pressure after a three-month lay-off with a broken collarbone from a fall in New Zealand. Preparing for Saturday's chances, he said he regretted trying to come back too early. 'I live on the Central Coast and it was when we had all that rain, and there was only one road in and out, so we were in there for a couple of days,' said Hutchings, who has been based in Australia for 10 years. 'I might have come back a little bit soon, and I was trying to ride a little bit lighter at the same time, but the suspension I got, to take some positives out of it, I rode work every single day, got fit and got the weight down, and I rode my minimum, 56 [kilograms], first ride back on Wednesday.

Beau Dazzler copped a wide run in the Derby when being beaten more than nine lengths but Sears, who co-trains with daughter Maddy, now believes the colt's sweet spot could potentially be 1800m. • 'He told me straight up I had cancer': Legendary racing doctor retires Sears feels you need a horse who runs a strong 1800m to win the 1600m Guineas given the expansive nature of the big Sunshine Coast track. 'We were going to spell him after the Derby, but he hadn't had many runs this campaign,' Sears said. 'He was only third-up into the Derby and I'm not sure whether training him for a Derby really suited him. 'We decided to set him for the Winx Guineas because we figured that you needed a horse who could run 1800m to win the Guineas and he certainly is that. 'He hasn't raced for a while and he had a few days in the paddock and he's fresh and going well. 'I am now thinking he is a really good mile to 1800(m) horse. 'I know on Saturday that the distance will be no problem at all and he handles the sting out of the track.' Regular rider Jag Guthmann-Chester will again partner Beau Dazzler who has drawn barrier nine in the Winx Guineas, the race so named because it was the start of Winx's famous 33-race winning streak in 2015. Paul Shailer-trained Mister Bianco, who wears the same colours as Winx and is part-owned by Peter Tighe, is the $3.40 favourite for the Winx Guineas off the back of three successive wins. But Mister Bianco has drawn wide and punters must also note he has never raced beyond 1400m before. • Gollan filly makes late winter return with eye to summer Meanwhile, Sears is certain his speedy sprinter Steady Ready is the one to beat as the $3.10 favourite in the $200,000 Open Plate (1000m). Steady Ready was well beaten when resuming in the Lightning Handicap at Eagle Farm last month but Sears said there were clear excuses. 'He had a few issues when he last raced, he galloped on his heel and he was lame for a week afterwards,' Sears said. 'But we took him and trialled him at Beaudesert and I thought he went really good.
