The red carpet has been unrolled, the stars are having their hair done and alternative plans have been made for the Netflix afterparty after a fire broke out at their original venue, the Chiltern Firehouse, on Friday. The scene is set for the 78th British Academy Film Awards.
Why do they matter? Well, other than being important in their own right, they are last-gasp auditions for the Academy Awards in a fortnight. Final Oscars voting closes on Tuesday, and many voters will be keeping their powder dry until they see what happens tonight: who's unfairly snubbed, who gives a corker of an acceptance speech and whether anybody falls over their frock. Upending the race? Sean Baker and Anora star Mikey Madison at the Directors Guild of America awards last weekend. Photograph: Chris Chew/UPI/Rex/Shutterstock
Plus, a Venn diagram of Bafta and Oscar voters would reveal much more overlap than with most other awards bodies – certainly than the Golden Globes and Critics Choice awards. Last weekend, two big guild bodies in the US – the directors' and producers' guilds – upended the race by bestowing their big prize not on previous frontrunner The Brutalist but rather on Sean Baker's Anora.
Will Bafta voters follow suit? Might boomer nostalgia dominate and offer the gong instead to A Complete Unknown? Or could the home advantage mean we see white smoke for Conclave – in both the best film and outstanding British film categories? Share

Lorraine Kelly fumes as 7/7 London bombings survivor shares NHS blunder

Lorraine Kelly interviewed Thelma Stober, survivor of the 7/7 London bombings, during the latest instalment of her ITV show ITV's Lorraine featured Thelma Stober, a survivor of the 7/7 London bombings, on Thursday (3 July) for a deeply moving interview. Thelma appeared alongside presenter Lorraine Kelly to discuss Netflix's latest docuseries, Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 Bombers, sharing candidly about her personal ordeal and the lasting effects of the atrocities. ‌ Thelma was travelling on the Aldgate tube during the morning of 7 July 2005, when terror struck London. Four individual suicide attackers detonated explosives across the capital, with three bombs exploding at underground stations whilst another was set off on a bus, claiming 52 lives and wounding more than 770 people. ‌ "I was told subsequently by the police following investigation that I was actually standing next to the bomber," Thelma disclosed, explaining that whilst asked whether she recalls that precise moment, she doesn't, as she was engrossed in reading a book. She continued: "I was aware of people around me, but not aware at all." Thelma remembered attempting to send a text message upon reaching Liverpool Street, but she heard sudden sounds and witnessed flashes before regaining consciousness on the railway track, reports the Express. Throughout the interview, Thelma discussed how communities united in response, with Lorraine highlighting how the attacks had transformed London as a metropolis. The presenter remarked: "It was so interesting, actually very heartening, Thelma, in the days, weeks and months after this, people really came together. London gets criticised for being a city where nobody talks to one another and keeps people at a distance, but I really noticed that. ‌ "I remember that vividly, the way that people were making eye contact. There was a care there for one another." Thelma then shared her experience with her prosthetic limb, explaining how after an NHS error, public donations helped her acquire the correct prosthetic. "Absolutely. I was given a limb that did not match my skin tone by the NHS," she told Lorraine. "It was the generosity of the public that money was collected by what is now the London Emergencies Trust, who came to my rescue - because although I'm a fighter, I did not have the energy at the time to fight the NHS - to give me money which was used to purchase a limb which matched my skin tone." ‌ Lorraine responded with shock, saying: "Oh, for goodness' sake! I've spoken to people who have come back, soldiers coming back from Afghanistan, and they've had the same thing happen back then. "Things have changed, thanks to the likes of yourself. But, as if things aren't bad enough, you should not have to deal with that. That's ridiculous!" ‌ Daily Record has contacted the NHS for a comment. In a poignant declaration, Thelma pledged her unwavering determination, asserting: "We will fight against terrorism, we will never be defeated." She continued with heartfelt resolve: "And, for the lives of the 52 people, who, in a reckless, senseless attack, lost their lives, I will never give up. We will never give up." Catch Lorraine on weekdays at 9am on ITV1.

Netflix cancels two of the biggest shows of 2025 and fans are disgusted

More info Netflix has cancelled two of the biggest shows of 2025 and fans are disgusted. According to reports featured in Deadline and Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant has decided to cancel Pulse and The Residence. Both of these series debuted earlier this year. Only recently, website What's On Netflix named both of these titles as two of the best five performing new shows so far this year. This hasn't helped save them, despite other series such as Bad Thoughts and Bet gaining fewer views yet they have already been handed second season renewals. The Residence was a murder mystery whodunnit compared to film series Knives Out set inside the White House. Uzo Aduba starred as Cordelia Cupp, considered to be the greatest detective in the world with a strong affinity for bird watching. It managed around 15 million views in its first two weeks of being released. (Image: Netflix) It came from the creative minds behind Scandal including Shonda Rhimes and showrunner Paul William Davies. While its first series was a self contained story, it had been reported that the idea was it could become an anthology series with Cupp returning to take on new cases in follow up seasons. Pulse was Netflix's first English language medical procedural. As soon as its trailer was released to fans, it was hailed as the streamer's answer to Grey's Anatomy. It also managed around 15 million views in its first two weeks of being released. According to its synopsis, the series follows the personal and professional lives of emergency and surgical residents at Maguire Hospital, a level-one trauma center in Miami during the race for Emergency Medicine Chief Resident. It shows the aftermath of a sexual harassment complaint while the city is hit with a hurricane and an influx of patients. Despite the first season finale ending with multiple cliffhangers, fans will no longer find out what happens next. It has apparently been placed on indefinite hiatus and it is currently unknown whether or not it would return for a second season. While Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow led the series, like The Residence it was expected to be turned into an anthology and could have featured new characters. Fans have not taken this latest news well. Many have shared their displeasure at another round of cancellations of shows which they believed had performed well. Responding to the news, one fan posted on social media saying: "The Residence was a great show. I'm seriously not happy about this cancellation." Another added: "The Residence was Netflix's best show and one of their few worth watching, but alright I guess." (Image: Netflix) Someone else commented: "The reason Netflix disgusts me to be honest. Get into a show and all of a sudden it's cancelled. They know The Residence major reason for having low views was because of the huge success and overshadowing from Adolescence yet they cancelled it. It makes no sense." One person asked: "Pulse AND The Residence both cancelled?? What the actual F is wrong with Netflix? Two of the best shows this year. The streaming model is so f*****d up. And the execs wonder why no one wants to get attached to new shows anymore." Pulse and The Residence are streaming on Netflix.
