We're watching a Brendan Rodgers Celtic rerun minus 'terminado' and board would be dumb to ignore the danger
There was a famous line from Dumb and Dumber that came to mind after Brendan Rodgers lobbed his grenade into the Celtic boardroom on Friday.
It was when Jim Carrey's Lloyd Christmas character was asking the object of his desire how his prospects looked.
She said: 'Not good. About one in a million.'
The bold Lloyd shot back from under his dodgy fringe: 'So you're saying there's a chance? Yes!'
Right now it seems like there's even less than a one in a million chance of Rodgers ' relationship lasting beyond the end of the season.
But, maybe it's dumb of fans to think it, but his explosive comments the other day did actually leave the door open – even if just a tad.
This might be half full – or half wit – way to see it but this is the first time Rodgers has even hinted that he might even be open to remaining at the club beyond his three years.
It has been kind of assumed he'd feel he'd had enough by that stage, having been in charge for almost six years over two spells and all the nonsense that goes along with it.
Sure, there were warnings for the board, maybe even an ultimatum over what needs to happen in the next few weeks.
But there was also a hint of a road map. It wasn't just back me or I'm off. It was also back me and I might actually stay.
Look, it was probably a shrewd move applying the thumb screws a tad to get the suits to get shift on and get deals done.
It was also advice on what they need to do to keep hold of the best possible manager they could hope for.
Rodgers doesn't say anything lightly. Every word is there for a reason. This is a guy who studied neurolinguistic programming – a psychological approach where language is used to steer folk in a certain direction to ensure desired outcomes.
He's a master at it. Sometimes it can be cryptic and open to interpretation. Other times – like Friday – it's crystal clear.
There's no doubt this press conference was a bit like Oasis playing one of their greatest hits.
We've been here before with Rodgers. Back in August 2018, he was tearing his hair out over missing out on John McGinn while his team were toiling in the Champions League qualifier with AEK Athens.
The famous 'Terminado' presser. Those of us in the room that day knew the Irishman had basically hit the button on the countdown clock to his exit that day.
When asked about the club not matching his ambition, he said: 'My job is done then. Terminado. Gone.
'That's the challenge. You have to test yourself to the limit. You have to be courageous as a club.
'It's a joy to work here. I love my life here and enjoy being the manager here.
'But it's no good if I just sit back and get comfortable. Being comfortable is the enemy of progress.
'We don't want to stand still. How do we improve? We improve in Europe and in order to do that, it's simple, is quality players.
'The minute I start thinking otherwise and get comfortable, then progress stops. In football you can't afford to do that.
'It's too late once the rot sets in. It's too late. Deep down I am a supporter but I am also a professional manager. I also look for the help that is needed to take the team to the next level if that is what the demand is. I will always push for that.'
Sound familiar? Friday was a rerun minus the terminado line.
Except this time is different. The Celtic board called his bluff back then and he jumped at the first chance to get back to the EPL.
This time he'll see out the season and you suspect he might fancy a crack at the Saudi league having seen last week against Al Ahli a club that will happily stump up £40m for a full back and not blank at £50m for a striker.
No one could blame him after having the rug pulled out from him at Leicester City after stunning success, and he's probably sick of the scraping again at Celtic.
Yet there is this feeling he does love being Celtic manager. He relishes being king in this country, building a legacy at the club and trying to defy the odds in Europe.
Celtic have money in the bank but they are in danger of losing their greatest asset.
But he's told them there is a chance – even if it's one in a million – and the board would be beyond dumb and dumber to ignore it.

Philippe Clement lifts lid on Rangers boardroom 'total chaos' and reveals what really angered him about sacking
The Belgian was bulleted from his position following a disastrous Scottish Cup exit but at a time of turmoil for the club Sacked Ibrox gaffer Philippe Clement claims his bid to rebuild Rangers was wrecked by 'total chaos' in the boardroom. The Belgian boss was hired to replace Michael Beale in October 2023 - but he lasted just 16 months before being axed himself. A catastrophic Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen's Park in February left the former Club Brugge and Monaco gaffer clinging to his job. But the final straw came a fortnight later as Clement's side slipped up again at home to St Mirren, putting the nail in coffin of their already faint title hopes. However, the 51-year-old believes his chances of surviving in the Ibrox hot seat were undone by turmoil around the directors' table. Gers' preparations last summer were wrecked by a construction cock-up which forced the team to play the first month of the campaign at Hampden, while the club was left rudderless when both chairman John Bennett and chief exec James Bisgrove quit within weeks of each other. "That's the frustration, the frustrating part of the story," Clement told BBC Scotland's Sacked in the Morning podcast. "The first seven months, everybody was really happy about what happened in the club. There was a big change. But after that, a lot of things changed in the club and it became quite chaotic. "I never had a club or saw a club where you don't have all these positions filled during a season for six or seven months. So a lot of things happened." Clement - who has since been replaced by Russell Martin - expected to be given funds to challenge Celtic having pushed the Parkhead side close the previous season before a late collapse. But he was shocked to learn the budget had been slashed having been given orders from the board to sell his top earners before he could buy in fresh recruits. "They said we know we don't have the money that Celtic has for the moment," Clement added. "It was quite an old squad. So we know we're going to need four, five, maybe six transfer windows to gain money and to close this gap with Celtic. "And it starts with getting young players in, develop them, make them better and sell them to build the club again where it should be. "The board was afraid to say these things towards the fans because they were already very angry about the stadium issue. I was the only one speaking in the club because there was nobody any more." Clement lifted a League Cup just two months after arriving in Glasgow but was left playing catch-up on Celtic for the remainder of his time at Rangers. "There was a big difference about everything around the team, even maybe a bigger difference than on the pitch," he said, when asked about the gap between the Old Firm clubs. "In preparation, in everything around the club, Celtic is much more organised than Rangers. And I was there for sure in these seven months where there was total chaos at Rangers." Clement was binned with his team 13 points adrift of the Hoops. But he was left unhappy after learning through the media rather than the club that his time was up. "It felt really empty," Clement said. "I was also angry that moment because all the journalists knew before me. "I got a lot of messages from Scotland, England and Belgium even, before I get a message from the club, so I was not happy with that. That's not good. "I told them also that it was totally disrespectful, that moment. But I felt really empty because you build something together in your full day and night with everything in the club. "And I had to do much more than you normally should do as a manager in the months before when these positions were not filled in."

For a start, in the XI being bandied about there is NO place for captain James Tavernier with the skipper, despite opening the scoring against Motherwell, coming in for criticism for his part in the Steelmen's late leveller. Martin referred to players 'just jogging around' and both Tavernier and the much-maligned Kieran Dowell didn't cover themselves in glory in the build up to the late sucker punch, neither strong enough in the tackle to stop Emmanuel Longelo as he made his way into the box before the ball ended up back him to fire past Jack Butland. Tavernier has split the Ibrox support for long enough with many fans believing a succession of managers' loyalty to the long-serving skipper has cost them. And with Max Aarons a natural right back being played on the left - and looking uncomfortable - to accommodate Tavernier then it could be Martin will choose to bench Tavernier and bring Jefte into the left back slot. Martin surprised many by turning to Dowell this season when it looked like the ex-Norwich City man's Ibrox career was over when he was shipped out on loan to Birmingham City. And he hasn't made the most of his second chance in this three outings this season but with the signing of Oliver Antman and his inclusion in the Champions League squad then it wouldn't be a major surprise to see that swap, as the rumoured line-up suggests. Martin picked out Cyriel Dessers and Lyall Cameron for praise in terms of attitude amid a blast about egos in the squad and those two could also come in. And that would also see the axe fall on Nico Raskin, with Joe Rothwell's arrival squeezing him out of the position he did so well in last season, and Danilo.
