SMP 2025 celebrates unity, ethnic diversity in Malaysia
BATU KAWAN (July 26): The Rumah KAMI (Ethnic) Exhibition, the Kadazan Dusun Ethnic Village Exhibition, and the Orang Asli Village were among the main attractions for visitors during the Sambutan Minggu Perpaduan (SMP) or National Unity Week Celebration.
There were more than 40 main activities during the celebration from July 17 to 20.
Among them were also Foodunites, Timeline Exhibitions, 'Malaysia My Homeland' Exhibition, Traditional Sports, Unity Entrepreneurs Sales, Boria Competitions, Ethnic Costume Competitions, Ethnic Dance Competitions, Book Festivals, and Cultural Performances.
The event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 19, 2025.
This year, the theme 'Harmony in Diversity' was introduced to enhance harmony among people of different faiths in the country.
This theme also reflects the reality of Malaysia's diverse society, emphasizing the values of understanding, respect, and acceptance towards achieving national harmony.
The celebration served as a platform for interaction and integration, fostering the spirit of unity while broadening knowledge about the diverse customs, cultures, and traditions of Malaysian society.

More than 200,000 visitors from various backgrounds, races, and cultures attended the event, proving that SMP is an excellent platform for uniting Malaysians.
To engage and strengthen relationships with grassroots communities, the SMP Roadshow Series was also conducted in every state.
Seven states including Melaka, Kedah, Kelantan, Sabah, Johor, Perlis, and Terengganu have completed their SMP celebrations, with the remaining eight states to follow.
National Unity Minister, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, said his ministry is drafting a new approach to strengthen the implementation of SMP.
He said starting next year, SMP will be combined with cultural celebrations of the ethnic minority groups in each state.
'This new approach recognizes the heritage of minority ethnic groups and provides an opportunity for the people to appreciate the cultural diversity that shapes Malaysia's identity,' he said at the launch of SMP 2025.
The launching ceremony also witnessed the presentation of grants to selected Rukun Tetangga (KRT) areas, encouraging them to implement progressive, inclusive, and high-impact economic programmes.
Additionally, Anwar presented scholarships to three selected recipients under the Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation (YTAR) as a symbol of the government's commitment to empowering the education of the younger generation.
The Ministry of National Unity is committed to strengthening the spirit of unity, patriotism, togetherness, goodwill, and volunteerism among Malaysians.

This effort aligns with the aspirations of the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara, guided by the three main pillars of the National Unity Policy.
Meanwhile, Aaron stated that the National Unity Index (IPNas) is currently being conducted for the third time and is expected to record a score of 0.7, reflecting the level of unity among Malaysians.
'This index evaluates key aspects such as inter-ethnic relations, perceptions of national identity, and social trust, serving as a primary reference for formulating ministry policies and initiatives to strengthen national unity.
'Since 2023, various initiatives have been implemented, clearly demonstrating that nation-building is the ultimate goal in strengthening national unity.

Don't let foreigners misuse business licences, warns Nga
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must not allow their citizenship to be misused by foreigners to obtain business licences, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said from January 2023 to July this year, 3,703 enforcement operations were carried out against business premises involving foreign workers. "Malaysian citizens must uphold the Rukun Negara and safeguard the nation's identity from being exploited," he said in reply to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said 14,834 compounds were issued, 23 licences terminated, and 2,880 premises seized due to licence violations. He explained that government policies were for the benefit of Malaysians and not foreigners, while clarifying that the ministry had never issued such licences to foreigners. "The local authorities and the government have never allowed foreigners to apply and obtain licences for hawker stalls, small businesses, business premises, retail shops, restaurants, car workshops and markets," he said. He added that foreigners were also not allowed to work at premises owned by the local authorities, as citizens were meant to earn an income through the local authorities' premises. "The local authorities will not compromise with any violation of the terms of the licence issued. Strict action such as seizures, compounds, shutting down of premises and termination of licences will be taken," he said.

Late RPK's politically-inclined daughter congratulates PMX for having 'finally unite Malaysians'
Editor's Note: 'You make your arwah (late) daddy proud. Articulate and spot on' sums up the accolades received by Raja Sara Petra, the daughter of the late self-exiled blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK) who breathed his last on Sept 9 last year in Manchester, UK. This piece of poetic justice will tell if her late father's political prowess has rubbed off on Raja Sara. FOR the longest time, people complained: 'Pembangkang tiada taring' (literally, 'The opposition is fang-less') 'Mana suara pembangkang?' ('Where is the voice of the opposition?' 'Semua diam macam takde substance.' ('All are quiet as if without substance') But today? We saw something else. A sea of Malaysians Chinese, Malay, Indians, Pakcik & Makcik, Youths, T20s in designer shades & sneakers all walking the same jalan (route), chanting the same call: 'Turun Anwar.' Suddenly, the so-called 'weak' opposition managed to mobilise not just party members but ordinary rakyat. From B40 to M40 and even T20. And if anyone deserves credit for this powerful show of unity? It's Anwar Ibrahim himself. Because Nothing Unites A Country Like Shared Disappointment You see, while the opposition made this rally happen, it was Anwar who orchestrated the anger. The man who used to lead demos is now the reason they exist. The reformasi veteran has come full circle. From marching on the street … to being the one people march against. Anwar Knows This Game Too Well So how did the government respond? No official road closures. But roadblocks were everywhere. Cars searched in detailed. Some even told to turn back. Strategic enough to avoid headlines, but disruptive enough to kill momentum. Classic political counter-programming: Keep the roads open … but jammed. So protestors get scattered. So the aerial photos won't look too 'dangerous.' So they can say: 'Oh, turnout? 10,000 je …' Sure, if you crop the picture tight enough. But everyone on the ground saw the truth. The chants echoed from Sogo, Pasar Seni, Masjid Negara, Kampung Baru all the way to Dataran Merdeka. Umbrellas opened, people stood in the rain not for RM100 but for dignity. This Is Bigger Than Politics This wasn't just a PAS or Perikatan Nasional (PN) rally. It was the rakyat speaking. Families brought their teens like it was a weekend outing. You had Chinese aunties and uncle walking hand-in-hand Malays from kampung and bandar. Indians. students. T20s with B40s. Everyone. And yes, some even came to fight for Najib and these weren't even UMNO people. You want to talk about irony? The man you replaced is now becoming a symbol of what you promised and failed to be. This Is Bigger Than Politics It was about the rakyat delivering a message. It was about Malaysians from all walks of life Fed up. Let down. And finally speaking up. You had B40s who can't afford eggs. M40s whose pay hasn't moved. T20s questioning why they're being taxed more. All walking together. So to those who said Malaysia is too divided? Look again. We were just waiting for the right reason. So thank you, Anwar. You've done what no PM has done in years: You made Malaysians stand together. Not for you. But against you. And that, ironically, might just be your legacy. – July 28, 2025 Raja Sara Petra – daughter of the late controversial political blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin (RPK) – is the Batu UMNO Puteri wing EXCO member. SIA flights between Singapore-Cambodia, Singapore-Thailand, operating normally amid border dispute
A spokesperson for the SIA Group said its top priority is the safety of customers and its employees. - ST SINGAPORE: All Singapore Airlines (SIA) flights between Singapore and Cambodia, as well as between Singapore and Thailand, continue to operate normally despite a deadly border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. A spokesperson for the SIA Group said its top priority is the safety of customers and its employees. 'We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust our flights where necessary,' the spokesperson added. A long-simmering border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia escalated to deadly violence on July 24 as their military forces clashed at multiple spots, leaving at least 12 people dead. The flare-up is part of a broader disagreement with origins stretching back more than a century and involves parts of a region known as the Emerald Triangle, where the boundaries of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos meet. The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia will attend mediation talks over their deadly border conflict in Malaysia on July 28 at 3pm local time at the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim invited representatives from both countries. Malaysia, which chairs the regional grouping Asean, has informed the Thai government that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet would also be attending the talks, the statement said. According to The Nation, flights between Thailand and Cambodia are continuing as normal, as Cambodia's declared restricted area is limited and does not significantly impact air traffic departing from Thailand. Alternative flight paths are also readily available. - The Straits Times/ANN
