KLIA Customs thwart RM5.56m cannabis smuggling, seize 56.81kg of drugs

Malay Mail26-06-2025
SEPANG, June 26 — The Royal Malaysian Customs Department at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (JKDM LTAKL) foiled an attempt to smuggle over 56.81 kilogrammes of cannabis flowers, estimated to be worth RM5.56 million.
This followed the seizure of the cannabis flowers in operations conducted at several air cargo terminal operators in the KLIA Free Trade Zone last April and May.
JKDM LTAKL Director Zulkifli Muhammad said a total of 19 parcels, which were later found to contain substances suspected of being cannabis flowers, were seized during the operations.
'The drugs were believed to be smuggled into the country and then out to various countries using air courier services,' he said in a statement today.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides the death penalty or life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death, upon conviction.
In another development, Zulkifli said his team also foiled an attempt to smuggle 1.54 million white cigarettes of various brands, estimated to be worth RM154,000, with unpaid duties and taxes amounting to RM1.03 million, in a raid in Klang, Selangor, last May 9.
He said the contraband was seized from two lorries following information and intelligence gathering by his team.
'The syndicate's modus operandi is to use bonded lorries to distribute the smuggled cigarettes, and the cigarette deliveries are carried out at night to avoid detection by the authorities,' he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967, which iprovides a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is higher, and not more than 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, whichever is higher, or imprisoned for not more than five years, or both, upon conviction. — Bernama

RM140,000 allegedly swindled in Selangor religious school con

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Police in Selangor are investigating a scam involving RM140,000 in losses linked to a fraudulent religious school development project. Two women in their 40s, both business owners, lodged police reports in Shah Alam and Gombak claiming they were duped between 2019 and 2020. The suspect, a local man in his 30s who identified himself as an independent religious speaker, allegedly gained the victims' trust by invoking religious causes. The women were led to believe they were contributing to the development of a religious school in Selangor. One victim transferred RM60,000 through three transactions between August and September 2020. The second victim made a single payment of RM80,000 in 2019, police said. The suspect allegedly used the name of a religious institution to lend legitimacy to his claims and secure the funds. Police have opened two investigation papers under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan urged the public to verify any requests for donations or investments, especially those linked to religious or educational projects. He reminded the public to avoid making payments to personal or unregistered accounts and to contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 for suspicious activity.
