Acclaimed French creative director Olivier Rousteing announced as first cultural collaborator invited within Johnnie Walker Vault; Pushing boundaries of whisky creation by bringing together Rousteing's trailblazing fashion vision and Master Blender Dr Emma Walker's artistry and access to 500 of the rarest whiskies contained within Johnnie Walker Vault.
In the first release of a two-part collaboration, Couture Expression is a collection of four couture blends inspired by a sensorial journey through the seasons.
LONDON, April 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnnie Walker, has announced acclaimed French couture designer Olivier Rousteing as the first cultural partner under the Johnnie Walker Vault platform. Launched earlier this year, Johnnie Walker Vault is a new global luxury platform grounded in blending artistry - uniting bespoke blends, luxurious experiences and collaborations with cultural icons all under one visionary banner.
First Unveiling: Couture Expression
Couture Expression is the inaugural limited-edition release from the Johnnie Walker Vault, co-created by Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr Emma Walker and Olivier Rousteing. Drawing inspiration from the world of high fashion, the collection elevates blending artistry into new dimensions through a seasonal interpretation, setting a new standard of luxury whisky creation.
"Pushing boundaries through blending artistry has always been at the heart of my work, and opening the doors of the Johnnie Walker Vault to welcome such a progressive, creative talent of Olivier's magnitude has been something that will stay with me forever." says Master Blender, Dr. Emma Walker.
This launch brings together two creatives at the height of their craft, each renowned for pushing the boundaries of their art. In a hidden 'atelier' beneath Johnnie Walker Princes Street, Dr. Emma Walker, the brand's Master Blender, and Rousteing collaborated to craft and design a collection of four blends - Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter - capturing Rousteing's personal and emotional connection to each season as well as its sensorial spirit.
"This has been an emotional journey," says Rousteing."What started as a collaboration to create one special release became a creative exploration of four seasons, just like a couture collection. For me, the seasons bring different energy and emotions - the feeling of rebirth in Spring, the hazy freedom of Summer, the self-reflection of Fall and the coziness of home and family in Winter - that Emma so beautifully captured in the collection."
Couture Expression Blends
Each of the four blends in the collection begins with the same luxurious 'heart', including ghost whiskies from Brora and Port Dundas, setting a marker for the rarity of the collection. Dr. Walker then layered hand-selected whiskies from the Johnnie Walker Vault - a library of 500 rare, aged and ghost whiskies, personally curated and rotated from the very best of the 10 million casks of Scotch available to her as Master Blender. In an innovative fusion of creative minds, over the course of 12 months, Dr Walker translated Rousteing's personal narrative into four sensorial journeys through flavour and time.
Emma Walker continued,"Olivier brought an emotional language to the blending creation, and we worked together to explore what whisky can express - technically, sensorially and artistically. We deliberately chose to use the same whiskies across several of the seasons, playing with proportions, textures and seasonal notes to create four distinct expressions of whiskies"

Meet writer Bernard Werber on classical music stage

Hic et Nunc! Music Festival presents world premiere of 'Chimeric Suite,' a collaboration between the French author, composer Kim Texu and Sejong Soloists French science fiction writer Bernard Werber is no stranger to Korean readers, having sold more than 12.5 million copies of his works in Korea since the publication of the Korean-language edition of 'Empire of the Ants' in 1993. Next month, however, his encounter with Korean audiences will take place on stage at a classical music concert when Werber takes part in the world premiere of Korean composer Kim Texu's 'Chimeric Suite.' In fact, Kim wrote the piece based on Werber's 2023 novel 'Le Temps des Chimeres," ('The Age of Chimeras'), which will be published in Korea later this year. On Aug. 27, the Sejong Soloists and Werber will take the stage, with the writer lending his text and voice for the performance, which will have subtitles in English and Korean provided on screen. The performance will also feature flutist Choi Na-kyung, also known as Jasmine Choi, and Denis Sungho, a Korean-Belgian classical guitarist and producer. 'Le Temps des Chimeres' is set in the near future after World War III, depicting a world where hybrid life forms, created by combining human DNA with animal DNA, begin to appear. The story features 'humans merged with moles' who live underground, 'humans merged with bats' who fly through the skies, and 'humans merged with dolphins' who live in the water. "It's a work that predicts the future, depicting events that could happen in the near future, about 10 years from now," the writer told reporters during an online press conference on Tuesday. Kim's music felt like film music, Werber said. 'It gave me the impression that the music itself became sentences, connecting one sentence to the next.' He added, 'Each instrument expresses a specific element. In this performance, water is represented by the guitar, air by the flute, and earth by the violin.' This will be Werber's first time onstage for a music concert, but music has accompanied him for a long time. While writing this book, Werber said he listened to a lot of Bach, whose music also appears in the novel. Thanks to his mother, who was a piano teacher, he was exposed to music from a young age. At 11, he was inspired by Vivaldi's piccolo concerto and went on to learn the piccolo. While writing his novel 'The Thanatonauts,' he frequently listened to Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun." 'Music has universality. It is free from the barriers of language, whereas literature inevitably undergoes some transformation through translation. In literature, each person reads at their own pace, but music has its own pace,' he said. The Aug. 27 performance is part of the annual Hic et Nunc! Music Festival, founded and supported by the Sejong Soloists. Since its founding in 1994 by renowned Juilliard violin professor Kang Hyo, the Sejong Soloists have earned global acclaim. giving more than 700 concerts in over 120 cities worldwide. "Hic et nunc' means 'here and now' in Latin. This year's festival, which is in its seventh edition, takes place from Aug. 26 to Sept. 4 at the Seoul Arts Center, Ewha Womans University and other venues. Werber and the Sejong Soloists will also take the concert to Sejong, Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu and Busan.

Cultural exchange between Korea, France to be strengthened in second half of the year

The Embassy of France in Seoul is set to embark on a second round of cultural events for the year, strengthening cultural ties between Korea and France across artistic fields ahead of next year's 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties. 'France has had a strong presence in contemporary creation, which continues to extend into areas that people might not typically expect, such as digital art and webtoons and other emerging fields," Pierre Morcos, cultural counselor of France in Korea, said Tuesday at the Embassy of France in Seoul. "Through artistic collaboration with Korea, we hope to explore and foster a sustainable and mutually enriching relationship,' he said. A number of French classical musicians, including violinist Olivier Charlier and pianist Emmanuel Strosser, will perform at "Music in PyeongChang,' a classical music festival held July 23- Aug. 2. Renowned French fiction writer Bernard Werber, who rose to prominence globally with his book 'Empire of the Ants,' will meet Korean audiences on Sept.1 at the French ambassador's residence in Seoul to introduce the author's new novel, 'The Age of Chimera,' set to be released locally on Aug. 20. The South Korea-France partnership is expected to be prominent in visual arts. French gallery Bernard Bouche will join the fourth edition of Frieze Seoul, scheduled from Sept. 3 to 6 at Coex in Seoul. Coinciding with the art fair, a survey exhibition of French American artist Louise Bourgeois will open at Ho-Am Art Museum in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, from Aug. 21 to Jan. 4, 2026. Works by Paul Cezanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, on loan from the Orangerie Museum of Paris and the Orsay Museum, will be featured at an exhibition at Seoul Arts Center from Sept. 19 to Jan. 25. Attending Tuesday's press conference were French artists Floryan Varennes and Mona Oren. Varennes is participating in an embassy-supported residency program from June to August at Villa Busan; Oren will participate in the Cheongju Craft Biennale, which kicks off Sept. 4. The second cohort of the Korea-France Film Academy, established by the Korean Film Council and Centre National Cinematographie in France, will take part in the Busan International Film Festival in September. To celebrate next year's 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, Culture Minister Yu In-chon and French Culture Minister Rachida Dati signed a letter of intention on cultural cooperation in May in Paris, covering a record 492 official events — 389 in the cultural field alone — to strengthen the bilateral partnership.
