Lions undrafted RB Anthony Tyus wants to 'make sure they can't get rid of me' in Detroit Tyus aims to show "effort, hard work, grit, relentlessness" to stick with the Lions
Anthony Tyus III is one of the 10 undrafted rookie free agents signed by the Detroit Lions after the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Ohio Bobcats running back showed why Detroit had interest with a strong rookie minicamp debut on Friday.
Tyus is a power-style, one-cut back in the mold of two Lions ahead of him on the depth chart, David Montgomery and Craig Reynolds. In Friday's rookie minicamp session, the 6-1, 225-pound Tyus demonstrated the decisive acceleration and dance-free aggressive style.
Putting on the Lions uniform was a dream come true for Tyus, a native of the Kalamazoo area two hours west of Detroit.
"It felt great (to put on the jersey)," Tyus laughed. "Wearing this Honolulu Blue, there ain't nothing like it."
Tyus spent several seasons at Northwestern before transferring to Ohio for his final year. He helped lead the Bobcats to a MAC title in Ford Field last December, rushing for 151 yards and a touchdown in Ohio's 38-3 romp over rival Miami.
"The Lions are my hometown team," Tyus told me after Friday's practice. "I'm excited. Friends are excited. Parents are excited."
Tyus continued,
"All you need is an opportunity and that's what I've got. I'm ready to roll with it ... God put me in the right place at the right time."
Tyus wins with balance, aggression and pacing to his running more than he wins with speed. Those qualities can be difficult to spotlight in an unpadded practice session. Tyus knows it's about the effort in Detroit.
When asked what he needs to show to stick with the Lions, Tyus didn't hesitate,
"Effort. Hard work. Grit. Relentlessness. Make sure they can't get rid of me."
As a fellow Ohio Bobcat alum, I needed to ask what his time in Athens taught him.
"Ohio allowed me to showcase my ability that I'm not just a big back, but I'm a big back that can be agile and move outside the box."
The engaging smile from Tyus didn't leave his face as he noted, "Coach (RB coach Tashard Choice) Choice knows about my hands." Tyus hauled in three passes for 34 yards and a touchdown in Ohio's bowl win over Jacksonville State, and he made a nice snag on a shoetop throw in drills on Friday, too.
Tyus is fighting to be the fifth RB on the Lions, a spot that typically resides on the practice squad. He outshone fellow UDFA signee Kye Robichaux, a more compact back from Boston College, on Friday. It's a promising start for a smart player who should look even better once the pads come on.

Browns release former $19 million free agent signing

The post Browns release former $19 million free agent signing appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Cleveland Browns finally have some hope for the future. Cleveland locked up Myles Garrett on a long-term contract and acquired an additional 2026 first-round pick this offseason. Now the Browns are moving on from one player they had high hopes for just a few seasons ago. The Browns have released edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. In a corresponding move, the Browns signed kicker Andre Szmyt. Cleveland signed Okoronkwo to a three-year, $19 million contract back in 2023. Okoronkwo had a breakout season in 2022 with the Texans, logging 44 total tackles and five sacks. There was plenty of optimism that Okoronkwo could blossom in Cleveland, especially while playing next to superstar Myles Garrett. While Ogbo did not take his career to the next level in Cleveland, he was a solid rotational player. He put up 31 total tackle with four-and-a-half sacks in 2023 and 23 total tackles with three sacks in 2024. Okoronkwo largely played a rotational role behind Garrett and Za'Darius Smith until the Browns traded him at the deadline last season. With Okoronkwo released, the Browns will turn to Isaiah McGuire and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to shore up the edge rusher spot opposite of Garrett. Meanwhile, Szmyt will compete with veteran Dustin Hopkins at kicker during Browns training camp next month. Diontae Johnson makes bold starting QB prediction ahead of Browns training camp The Browns will have more than just a kicker battle at training camp. Cleveland has to sort through its four healthy quarterbacks to determine who will be the team's starter heading into the regular season. Browns wide receiver Diontae Johnson made a bold prediction about who will win that battle in a recent interview. 'I think they are going to roll with Kenny (Pickett) for right now,' Johnson said. 'I've been seeing Kenny going like right now with the ones. Then Joe (Flacco) will come in. I think they are probably going to roll with him just to see like he's coming off a season with Philly and having a Super Bowl. So, I think they are going to stick with him through the preseason. Then you know they can live with Joe and what he brings to the table.' Johnson's predictions feels like one of the more likely outcomes for Cleveland's training camp battle. Rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are of course part of the competition too. But they face an uphill battle against established NFL quarterbacks, which is no easy feat for any rookie. It will be exciting to see who gets the early snaps at Browns training camp, which kicks off in late July. Shedeur Sanders impresses during Day 4 of Browns' QB competition

The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is one of the top NFL storylines with training camps under way. Joe Flacco, Dillion Gabriel, Kenny Pickett, and Shedeur Sanders are all vying for their place on the depth chart to replace the injured DeShaun Watson, who is expected to miss the entire season. Saturday was the final day of practice without pads as head coach Kevin Stefanski is giving the players off on Sunday. Business will pick up next week with their first preseason game on Friday and the speculation about who will be the team's starting quarterback Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals will continue. 'I mean, yeah, you can see them all winning the job, I think, right?' Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said last week. Stefanski said this week that "we'd like to make a decision sooner than later" when it comes to their QB1. Now the question will be who is going to stand out among the four? Sanders making most of training camp reps Much of the attention through the first few days of camp has been on Sanders, their 2025 fifth-round pick. He was a major story on draft night and will have attention on every play he makes on the field. He has not receiver many first-team reps, but that has not hindered his work ethic. "It doesn't really faze me. You gotta understand, we came all the way from an HBCU to a Power 5 [conference team], and now we here, so," Sanders said, via ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. "At this point you look around, there's nothing that's a challenge, I would say." Sanders did make his mark on Saturday with three touchdowns during the workout, including this one to fellow rookie Luke Floriea. ESPN Cleveland has been tracking the passing stats of all four quarterbacks this week and the other rookie in the rotation, Dillon Gabriel, has thrown the most with 38, compared to 34 by Flacco and Pickett, and 31 from Sanders. Gabriel, meanwhile, had led the way in team drill sets, according to tracking by ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. Flacco was the Browns' savior in 2023 when he guided them to the playoffs and won Comeback Player of the Year. Now 40, he's back in Cleveland on a one-year, $4 million deal. Stefanski limited the veteran quarterback's work in the spring purposely due to Flacco's familiarity with the offense. 'Oftentimes, the thought in the NFL is like, 'OK, well, your starter gets 70% of the reps, your backup gets 25% of the reps and your third guy gets 5% of the reps, and the job of the backups is to be ready to play with no reps,' Browns GM Andrew Berry told Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein in June. 'It doesn't have to be that way — especially in the spring, when we have some flexibility because we're not necessarily preparing for games.' Pickett made 42 pass attempts all of last season in a backup role to Jalen Hurts and the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. His first two NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers were mediocre with the 2022 No. 20 overall draft pick throwing for 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Berry said he likes Pickett's mobility and decision making and sees a pathway for improvement — maybe one that has Pickett follow in the footsteps of the likes of Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith as a reclamation project in a new environment. But the path to redemption for Pickett won't be easy as he attempts to fend off two rookies and a Super Bowl-winning veteran for the Browns' starting job. Pickett did not have his fifth-year option picked up by the Browns, meaning he's in the final year of his rookie deal and has a lot to prove if he doesn't want to turn into an NFL journeyman signal-caller.

Lions vs Australia: Second Test kick-off time, TV channel, live stream, team news, lineups, h2h, odds today

The British & Irish Lions can this morning seal a series win as they take on Australia in the second Test in Melbourne. Andy Farrell's side appeared to be on course for a record win in Brisbane last weekend when they took a 24-5 lead early in the second half, but the Wallabies responded well to keep it competitive for much of the second Lions, though, were still comfortable in winning 27-19 and it means they can wrap up the series with a match to spare as the two sides resume battle at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. A 2-1 victory over Australia in 2013 remains the only series the Lions have won since the turn of the century and this current squad will be desperate to keep their bid for a 3-0 whitewash on track. Having beaten the First Nations and Pasifika XV in midweek, the Lions have now won all seven matches they have played on Australian soil. They are looking to become the first Lions side to go unbeaten overseas in a tour since the 1974 squad did so in South Africa. Joe Schmidt's side, though, will have taken encouragement from their second-half display in the first Test and know they will have the momentum if they can force a series decider in Sydney next week. Lions vs Australia date, kick-off time and venue The Second Test between the Lions and Australia takes place on Saturday July 26, 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 11am BST. That is 8pm local time. The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the match, with more than 90,000 fans expected to be in attendance. How to watch Lions vs Australia TV channel: Live coverage of the Second Test is available via Sky Sports, who have exclusive broadcasting rights to the Lions tour in the UK this summer. Their broadcast starts at 9:30am BST on Saturday morning on both Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action. Live stream: Fans with a Sky Sports subscription can also watch the Second Test live online via the Sky Go app, while it's available to stream via NOW. Live blog: Follow the Second Test action with Standard Sport's live blog. Lions vs Australia team news Garry Ringrose has withdrawn from the Lions side after feeling the effects of concussion in training. Sione Tuipulotu has a tight hamstring, as Bundee Aki comes in at centre to partner Huw Jones as one of nine Irishmen in the starting XV. There is no change at full-back or on the wings, with Hugo Keenan, Tommy Freeman and James Lowe keeping their places, and Finn Russell is again at fly-half. Farrell has made a big call at loosehead, preferring Andrew Porter to Ellis Genge from the start, and Ollie Chessum comes in to replace in the injured Joe McCarthy at lock. Owen Farrell impressed in the midweek fixture and makes the bench to cover fly-half and centre, with Blair Kinghorn and Jac Morgan also among the replacements. Australia are significantly boosted by the return to the starting lineup of lock Will Skelton and flanker Rob Valetini. The pair both missed the first Test with calf injuries but have recovered and come straight back into the side in Melbourne. Dave Porecki starts at hooker, while Langi Gleeson is fit again after injury and is named on the bench. With Noah Lolesio missing the series due to injury, Tom Lynagh keeps his place at fly-half after making his first start last weekend. Lions vs Australia lineups British & Irish Lions: Keenan; Freeman, Jones, Aki, Lowe; Russell, Gibson-Park; Porter, Sheehan, Furlong, Itoje (capt), Chessum, Beirne, Curry, Conan. Replacements: Kelleher, Genge, Stuart, Ryan, Morgan, Mitchell, Farrell, Kinghorn. Australia: Wright; Jorgensen, Suaalii, Ikitau, Potter; Lynagh, Gordon; Slipper, Porecki, Alaalatoa, Frost, Skelton, Valetini, McReight, Wilson (capt). Replacements: Pollard, Bell, Robertson, Williams, Gleeson, Tizzano, McDermott, Donaldson. Lions vs Australia head to head (h2h) history and results The Lions have won seven of the nine series they have played in Australia, with the only exceptions coming in 1930 and 2001. Lions wins: 18 Australia wins: 6 Draws: 0 Lions vs Australia prediction The first Test, and indeed the series, looked like being a bit of a blowout for just over half of last week's match in Brisbane. The Lions were dominant physically and, led by some Russell inspiration, cut the Australian defence open almost at will. But Australia fought back in the second half and can take that into this match, and the availability of Skelton and Valetini is a major boost to the Wallabies pack. Farrell's decision to drop Genge to the bench suggests he wants more of an impact off the bench but that comes at a risk, with Australia potentially able to get more of a foothold in the match from the start. Both sides will believe they can be better than last week but the Lions should be confident of coming out on top, with a gulf in class evident in Brisbane. With the motivation of a series win being on the line, the Lions can be expected to keep their feet on the gas this week and they should leave themselves on the verge of a 3-0 whitewash. Lions to win by 12 points. Lions vs Australia match odds Lions to win: 2/9 Australia to win: 7/2 Draw: 22/1 Odds via Betfair (subject to change).
