USA Olympic hero opens up on PTSD after suffering gruesome injuries in traumatic crash

Daily Mail6 hours ago
Olympic hero Mikaela Shiffrin has opened up on the traumatic injuries she sustained during her horror crash last year that has left her suffering with PTSD even months later.
The Team USA skier, 30, had to be stretchered off the slopes in Vermont after doing a flip and careening into the protective barriers during the Killington Cup on November 30, 2024.
Shiffrin, who was chasing her 100th World Cup win, had been leading before she lost control near the finish line, slid into a gate, flipped head over skis, and collided with another gate before stopping in protective fencing.
She suffered a five-centimeter puncture wound to her hip area, which she has now revealed narrowly avoided her colon by one millimeter.
But the skiing star admitted the crash took more than a physical toll, as she detailed the mental health struggles she's had to endure over the past seven months.
'It's just been a process to recover from that physically, and mentally, more-so than I maybe expected,' Shiffrin told People. 'I was having a lot of actual PTSD symptoms.'

She opened up on the mental health woes, revealing the symptoms included 'flashbacks' and 'intrusive thoughts that were pretty challenging,' especially as she prepared for her return to the slopes in January.
Shiffrin previously explained that she had been 'impaled' during the scary incident when she shared a snap of her bruised hips and pelvis, and even a video of the hole in her side as it was tended to by a nurse at the hospital, with her followers in December.
However, even months later, Shiffrin admitted that she still isn't entirely certain how the crash occurred.
'That's the million-dollar question,' she told People. 'I crashed into a gate, and we think that maybe it was either impact or a portion of some part of the gate somehow managed to create the effect of a stab wound and it went right in here.'
When the incident occurred, Shiffrin was leading after the first run of the GS and charging after her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington's steep finish pitch, when she lost the grip on her outside ski.
She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop.
Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd.
The American has not suffered as many devastating injuries as many ski racers have. In her 14-year career, she has only had to rehab two injuries that happened on the hill: a torn medial collateral ligament and bone bruising in her right knee in December 2015 and a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee after a downhill crash in January 2024.
Neither knee injury required surgery and both times Shiffrin was back to racing within two months.
Shiffrin went on to secure her historic 100th World Cup win on the slopes of Sestriere in February following her comeback. She took that tally to 101 in March when she clinched another victory at the Sun Valley Finals.
To date, she has earned five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals - along with a silver - and seven world championships.

Report: NBA's first 7-team trade makes Kevin Durant officially a Rocket

July 6 - The NBA's first seven-team trade is official on Sunday with the start of the new league year as 15-time All-Star forward Kevin Durant is moving from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets, ESPN reported. The transaction, initially reported on June 22, also involves the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves, per Sunday's report. The Rockets added Durant as well as veteran Clint Capela, who played for Houston from 2014-20 before spending the last five seasons with the Hawks. The Suns received guard Jalen Green, guard/forward Dillon Brooks, center Khaman Maluach (the No. 10 overall pick of the 2025 draft, from Houston), forward Rasheer Fleming (31st pick of draft, from Minnesota), guard Koby Brea (41st pick, from Golden State), guard Daeqwon Plowden (from Atlanta) and a second-round selection. The Nets ended up with two second-round draft picks, while the Warriors acquired forward Alex Toohey (52nd overall pick in 2025, from Phoenix) and Jahmai Mashack (59th pick, from Houston). The Lakers added forward Adou Thiero, the 36th overall draft pick, from Brooklyn. Atlanta swapped second-round picks and also brought in veteran forward David Roddy from Houston and cash. The Timberwolves added Rocco Zikarsky (45th overall pick of 2025 draft, from the Lakers), two second-round selections and cash. Durant now is eligible to sign a two-year extension worth up to $122 million. He has one season left on his current deal and is set to earn $54.7 million in 2025-26. Durant will join a Rockets team that finished the regular season as the second seed in the Western Conference. The star forward will join All-Star Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson and Fred VanVleet, among others, in Houston. Durant, who turns 37 in September, played in 62 games with the Suns in 2024-25. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks, not far off of his career averages. He also shot 43.0 percent from 3-point range. Selected to the All-NBA first team six times and the Most Valuable Player for the 2013-14 season, Durant has appeared in 1,123 games with the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder (2007-16), Golden State Warriors (2016-19), Brooklyn Nets (2020-23) and Suns. He has career averages of 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds. 4.4 assists and 1.1 blocks, shooting 39 percent from long distance. Green, 23, averaged 21.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists while starting in all 82 games last season. He now joins All-Star Devin Booker in a potent backcourt for Phoenix. Green has contributed 20.1 points, 4.3 boards and 3.4 assists in 307 games (all starts) since being selected by the Rockets with the second overall pick of the 2021 NBA Draft. Brooks, 29, averaged 14.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 75 games (all starts) in 2024-25. He has contributed 14.2 points, 3.2 boards and 2.0 assists in 492 games (465 starts) with the Memphis Grizzlies (2017-23) and Rockets. He was selected by Houston in the second round of the 2017 draft. Capela, 31, averaged 8.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.0 blocks in 55 games (41 starts) for Atlanta before a season-ending hand injury in March. The 25th overall pick in the 2014 draft by Houston, Capela sports career averages of 12.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.4 blocks in 664 games (587 starts). --Field Level Media

Trevor Rogers, Jackson Holliday lift Orioles over skidding Braves

July 6 - Trevor Rogers pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and Jackson Holliday homered to help the visiting Baltimore Orioles beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Sunday to sweep their three-game series. It was the third straight win for the Orioles, who swept a series against Atlanta for the first time since 2015 and in Atlanta for the first time since 1999. It was Baltimore's fourth sweep of the season. The Braves have lost four in a row and dropped nine of their last 11. Atlanta fell to 11 games under .500. Rogers (2-0), who entered the game with a 0-7 career record against the Braves, allowed only four hits and two walks and struck out a season-high six. It was the third scoreless stint in five starts for Rogers, who lowered his ERA to 1.57. Baltimore reliever Seranthony Dominguez allowed a solo homer to Sean Murphy, his 13th, and a single to Ozzie Albies with one out in the ninth inning. Dominguez fanned Drake Baldwin and retired Michael Harris II on a grounder to earn his second save. Holliday went 4-for-4, the second four-hit game of his career, with a double and a home run. He supplied all the offense via a two-run homer in the third inning that just cleared the 16-foot brick wall in right field. It was his 11th of the season. Atlanta starter Grant Holmes (4-8) pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Holmes was helped by the Braves' defense, which turned three double plays behind him. The Orioles placed Gary Sanchez on the injured list with a right knee strain, giving the team four catchers on the IL. They acquired Alex Jackson from the New York Yankees to serve as the backup. Jackson was batting .226 with 10 homers in 44 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Orioles went 4-2 on their road trip and return home to start a three-game series against the New York Mets on Tuesday. The Braves went 2-7 on their homestand and begin a three-game series against the host Athletics on Tuesday. --Field Level Media

Woman speaks out after having calf torn off & ‘bone exposed' in Fourth of July shark attack that injured heroic husband

A WOMAN gives an update a year after surviving a brutal heart attack that left her calf torn off during a Fourth of July celebration. Tabatha Sullivent was one of four people injured in a shark attack on South Padre Island off the southern coast of Texas when something approached her. 4 4 "All I saw was something gray in the water, so I just kicked at it because I thought 'Oh my God, it's a huge fish,'" she told Valley Central. On July 4, 2024, Sullivent was on a trip with family and friends celebrating a birthday, a graduation, an engagement, and an anniversary. However, a simple trip to the beach nearly turned into tragedy after Sullivent was injured in a shark attack. Sullivent kicked at the shark when it suddenly attacked and bit off a majority of her left calf. Cellphone footage showed Sullivent bleeding heavily after she was pulled from the water with her left calf missing. She was rushed to a hospital but had to be flown to another facility due to the extent of her injuries. But the journey had only just begun as Sullivent faced several procedures, fought an infection, and underwent a skin graft. Last August, she shared an update on social media, revealing how it was taking one of her first steps since the attack "What I lost isn't coming back, and I think that's the hardest part for me right now. Is…just knowing my leg isn't gonna…doesn't grow back," she wrote. Sullivent told the outlet that she spent a month recovering in McAllen, Texas, before being transferred to her home near Dallas. "I had a bone exposed that I had to get another skin graft done on that one, so I did that one at Baylor in Dallas," she said. Sullivent's goal was to walk at her daughter's wedding, just four months after the attack. "I walked down the aisle, and I was dancing unassisted, so it was amazing it was great," she said. Sullivent's husband was also injured in the attack after he tried to rescue his wife. Now, the couple is going on vacation again, but they're steering clear of the beach. "Get a nice little tan going, and stay off the beach and out of the water, we do have the pool so that we can do that," Sullivent explained. Her whole family has gone to counseling since the attack, and Sullivent has begun seeing a therapist on her own. She is working through her trauma to hopefully get back to some of her favorite hobbies. "I want to go on the boat, I want to go snorkeling, I want to get in the water. I notice now if I see snorkeling adventures or deeper water, I'm not sure I could get in it," she said. "I think it would be really hard for me. And I would probably just panic and not know what was around me." However, the journey isn't over, as Sullivent explained she will have to undergo another plastic surgery soon and is experiencing nerve pain. She plans on getting cosmetic surgery on her leg for aesthetic purposes and to better protect her nearly exposed bone. Still, Sullivent said she's doing her best to remember the things she can do. 4
