Queen Elizabeth's wedding cake slice sold at an auction: New owner reveals his shocking plans for it
The royals are not just the carriers of titles but also of people's fascination that extends beyond just adoration and respect, it seems. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip tied the knot in a grand ceremony held in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947.
The couple of course celebrated their vows with a fruit cake that was designed by the chief confectioner at McVitie and Price Ltd.
As rationing from the war was still ongoing, the ingredients for the 500lb cake were flown into the UK from South Africa and Australia, thus giving the cake a nickname- 'the 10,000 mile cake' It was cut by Prince Philip with his ceremonial sword and produced 2,000 slices for guests. Over the years, single pieces of the cake have been auctioned off at whopping prices.
One such piece of the 78-year-old cake was resting in a drawer since the wedding. The slice was given to Chief Petty Officer F. Lownes, who served in the Royal Navy, at the Buckingham Palace reception.
Instead of eating the 4-inch by 3-inch slice, the officer passed it down to his son in a box with a silver embossed crown 'EP' cypher and the date on the lid. Eventually, the cake was passed down to his daughter-in-law, with the original packaging addressing the officer, stamped with the words 'On His Majesty's Service' in reference to the father-of-the-bride, King George VI.

Who has the cake now?

The cake was auctioned off by the family and bought by a royal fan and entrepreneur Garry Layton. The 64-year-old bought the slice for a total of £2,900 from Reeman Dansie Auctioneers of Colchester, Essex.
"They are very rare items and don't come on the market very often," said James Grinter, specialist at Reeman Dansie to the Daily Mail. "It was sold directly from the family of the person who received it in 1947.. I believe it is a tradition that certain Royal Navy personnel were sent a piece of wedding cake."
What are Garry Layton's plans for the cake slice?

One would expect Layton to either sell the slice further or store it as a priceless possession, considering he also owns a slice of Charles and Diana's wedding cake.
However, his plans are completely unique and truly a bit shocking. He plans to have the cake flambeed in rum before eating about a third of it at a replica state banquet he plans to hold on the Royal Yacht Britannia to mark his 65th birthday in 2026.
"This slice is extremely rare and is probably the last piece of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding cake in existence," he said.
"It is in good condition having been wrapped and kept in its box for almost 80 years"
While he hopes that flambeing it in rum will kill off any bacteria that may have developed in the slice, he is prepared for the worst as well. "But if anything happens to me then at least I will be going out in style on Britannia."

Ekta Kapoor on bringing back ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' after 25 years; writes ‘Let's create a show that's not afraid to raise important questions'
In a heartfelt note titled 'Why Kyunki, Why Now?', Ekta Kapoor , the queen of Indian television, officially announced the return of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, marking 25 years since the iconic show first aired. This time, however, the series will return in a limited-episode format, with a renewed purpose—not just to evoke nostalgia, but to reignite meaningful storytelling. Opening up about her initial hesitation, Ekta admitted, 'You can never compete with nostalgia. It always remains supreme.' She reflected on how Kyunki was more than a television show; it was a phenomenon that brought families together and bravely tackled subjects like domestic abuse, ageism, and women's independence—long before these topics became trending conversations. As discussions with her creative team unfolded, Ekta felt a deep sense of purpose. 'Can we keep Kyunki away from today's storytelling formats and focus once again on the issues that television once bravely addressed and dealt with?' she asked. In an age of flashy visuals and quick content, she felt the time was ripe to return to substance over spectacle. 'Let's do this!' she declared. 'Let's create a show that's not afraid to raise important questions, that sparks conversations, and stands out in a time dominated by visual gimmicks.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Delhi HC seeks clarification on SC's observations on 'Udaipur Files' movie
The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought a clarification from the parties on the observations made by the Supreme Court in related proceedings pertaining to release of movie "Udaipur Files" which is based on tailor Kanhaiya Lal murder case . A top court bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi on Wednesday refused to urgently list a plea challenging screening of the movie and orally observed: "Let the film be released". The top court observation was made after a counsel, appearing for one of the accused in the murder case, said the release of the film will prejudice the trial. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 21st Century Skills Start with Confident Communication Planet Spark Learn More Undo The high court on Wednesday directed the producer of "Udaipur Files" to arrange its screening for those seeking a ban on it. The film is scheduled for release on July 11. On Thursday, a division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal of the high court referred to the apex court's observations made earlier and asked the lawyers whether the apex court allowed the release of the movie. Live Events "In newspapers we saw the matter was in SC, which was refused, saying 'let the screening go on'," the HC bench said. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioners seeking a ban on the movie, submitted that only listing of the matter was requested before the apex court, not a stay. "Mentioning was rejected, not the request for stay. The SC did not even see the case file," Sibal said, requesting time to get a clarification from the top court on Wednesday's observation on release of the film. The apex court's observations on the issue was reported in media. The high court would hear the plea again at 2.30 PM. Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered in June 2022 allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The assailants had later released a video claiming the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma after her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. The case was probed by the National Investigation Agency and the accused were booked under stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), besides provisions under the Indian Penal Code. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
