Who is Jacob Misiorowski? Rookie All-Star Chats Pokémon, Card Collection

Fox Sportsa day ago
Jacob Misiorowski was as surprised as anyone by his MLB All-Star selection.
The 6-foot-7 rookie right-hander for the Milwaukee Brewers figured he would spend the break kicking back, ordering in some Chinese food, and doing "absolutely nothing."
Yet there he was in Atlanta — selected as a replacement after just five big-league starts, in a choice that ruffled some feathers — where his stuff was on full display. Nine pitches over 100 mph and this slider that wowed both dugouts.
But the All-Star nod also allowed him to discuss some of his biggest hobbies – collecting Pokémon and sports cards.
Before the game, I caught up with the 23-year-old standout to chat about his rapid rise, what it's like facing the stars he grew up watching, his hobbies off the field and more.
"I've been into Pokémon forever," he told me. "Getting back into sports cards, just being up here and seeing all the guys is fun." How'd you get into Pokémon?
Oh, I was young. I remember, I played like Pokémon Red and Green, that young, like on the Game Boy. But I've always loved it. Do you still play?
I still play. I got a Nintendo Switch, I got the Switch 2, so I'm going to play the new one when it comes out in October or something. But, it's been a lot of fun. How's your Pokémon card collection?
It's up there. It's pretty good. What's your best or favorite card?
Probably the base set shadowless Charizard…but it's beat [up]. Or the Neo Genesis Lugia. I saw you had Lugia on the inside of your suit jacket on the red carpet. You have that actual card?
I have the card. I want the first edition, but the first edition is like a crazy, crazy amount. Do you sell the cards? Hold onto them?
I just hold onto them. I'm trying to get like a master set of stuff, so just slowly finding cards. It's a lot of fun. How'd you end up getting into sports cards?
I was into sports cards but not this heavily. I was more into Pokémon. But then I got my first Topps deal, and I was like, 'This is sweet. I can collect my own cards?' So that's when I got really big into that. One of my cards was like stupid cheap, I would just buy up all of them. There's like a thing with the first set, you can call it a rainbow. I'm talking with the guy who has the one of one right now, so I'm getting close. Do you have a favorite card in your collection?
Out of sports cards, I have the whole printing plate line of my first Bowman. So, like, my first ever card, I have the whole printing plate, every card made on those plates. How'd you get that?
eBay! (laughs) Did you have to put up a fight?
Oh yeah. Every day, we'd see one pop up and my mom would be like, 'Oh, look, another one popped up.' We'd stay up however late it was bidding on it until the last second. It was fun.
That first year I got drafted. What other sports are you into other than baseball?
I played basically everything, I played basketball, I played football, I played soccer. You're a kid, you're just running around. But the biggest sport I'm into right now is football. Baseball and football, those are the two. How quickly did you realize this was the right route to take?
Pretty quick. (laughs) What position were you in football? Quarterback?
I was a tight end.
Very laid back. Make breakfast in my kitchen, go find an activity with me and my girlfriend and maybe a nice dinner somewhere. Do you have a favorite spot? Or type of cuisine?
I like a steakhouse or Italian place. We've tried a few. I know starting pitchers can be regimented about their day. Is there any pregame meal you're particular about?
It's pretty normal. Eat what you can. I'm pretty bad about eating, so it's kind of hard. Is there something you can't resist?
I don't think I have anything that if it's put in front of me I have to eat it. Who would you say has been most influential for you on this journey?
In life, probably my girlfriend. She's been there through the whole thing. We started dating in high school, so I think it's just one of those things that she's stuck with me through the thick and thin. Going [through junior college], it was rough going there for two years. Life's a little easier now.
It's a lot easier now. It's been good. How would family and friends describe you?
Happy, easygoing. Think that helps you manage the ups and downs of this job?
Of course. It's one of those things that you have to just go with the ebbs and flows. As a sports card collector to now be here alongside all these All-Stars, has it sunk in how fast this has all happened?
No, it's wild. I don't even know how to think about it. My jersey's on the table, and I just watched Shohei (Ohtani) and Freddie Freeman both sign it. It's kind of crazy. You've faced both of those guys already. Have you had any starstruck moments either here at All-Star or on the mound so far?
Definitely, like, my first start. We played the Cardinals and Nolan Arenado was up there, and I was like, 'Holy s---. This is actually him.' Did it wear off at all after that first game?
It wears off pretty quick when they slap a single through, and you're like, 'Oh, s---, here we go.'

Walker's clutch hit in the ninth lifts Astros over Diamondbacks for sweep

PHOENIX (AP) — Christian Walker singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep. Zack Short and Taylor Trammell started the ninth with bunt singles against Kevin Ginkel (1-4). One out later, Walker, a former Diamondback, hit a grounder up the middle to score Short. Josh Hader pitched the ninth for his 27th save and the Astros, who have won four in a row took a six-game lead in the AL West. Arizona trailed 3-1 entering the eighth, but Geraldo Perdomo led off with a double off reliever Bennett Sousa (4-0). Ketel Marte singled to drive in Perdomo, Corbin Carroll doubled to right sending Marte to third. Marte scored the tying run on Josh Naylor's single. Brandon Walter had held the Diamondbacks to one run and four hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out five, throwing just 82 pitches. Marte hit Walter's first pitch of the game for a home run, his 20th of the season. The Astros scored twice in the sixth. Walker led off with a double off Brandon Pfaadt, then advanced to third when Yainer Diaz also doubled. But Walker scored when shortstop Perdomo booted Brice Matthews' grounder for an error. Diaz scored the go-ahead run on reliever Andrew Saalfrank's wild pitch. Houston made it 3-1 when Diaz doubled off Trevor Richards leading off the eighth and scored on Mauricio Dubón's single. Perdomo went 4 for 4. Key moment Sousa got Arizona's Randal Grichuk to hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the eighth. Key stat Walter has only walked four batters in 53 2/3 innings this season. Next Arizona is off Thursday before beginning a nine-game trip Friday in Pittsburgh. Houston returns home to play the Athletics; the Astros have not announced a Thursday starter. ___ AP MLB:

When is the MLB Hall of Fame ceremony? How to watch Ichiro, Sabathia, Wagner inductions

Notoriously one of the most unforgiving Hall of Fame in sports, Cooperstown will be inducting five new members in 2025 − three elected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America and two by the Classic Baseball Era Committee. Since 2020, only one other Hall of Fame class has had as many members as this year's (seven in 2022), making 2025 one of the largest Cooperstown classes in recent memory. With baseball legends like Ichiro Suzuki and CC Sabathia getting enshrined this year, the ceremony is something that no baseball fan should miss. Here's everything to know about the 2025 MLB Hall of Fame induction ceremony: MLB News: Justin Verlander finally gets first win with San Francisco Giants When is the Hall of Fame ceremony? The ceremony is set for Sunday, July 27 at 1:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on MLB Network, and the MLB app. The event will take place at the Clark Sports Center, about a mile south of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. Who is being inducted? The three players inducted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America are 2001 AL MVP and single-season hits record holder Ichiro Suzuki, 2007 AL Cy Young winner and member of the 3,000-strikeout club CC Sabathia, as well as seven-time All-Star closer Billy Wagner. Dave Parker and Dick Allen were elected by the Classic Baseball Era Committee. Both men will be enshrined posthumously. Parker, who died last month, was NL MVP in 1978, won two World Series with the Pirates and Athletics, and was a two-time batting champ. Allen, who died in 2020, was named AL MVP in 1972. He's a seven-time All-Star with a career .951 OPS, sixth best of all players in the Integration Era with at least 5,000 plate appearances. The only men with better marks are Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Mike Trout, Mark McGwire and Mickey Mantle. What cap will Sabathia wear in Cooperstown? Sabathia will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a New York Yankee, the 22nd Yankee to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Sabathia spent 11 years in pinstripes, compared to 7.5 as a member of the Cleveland franchise. Sabathia won his only World Series title with the Yankees. He also finished top five in Cy Young voting in each of his first three seasons in the Bronx. The decisions for Ichiro and Wagner were much simpler as both players are best known for one team: the Mariners and Astros respectively. Parker will go into the Hall as a Pirate, while Allen will be enshrined as a member of the Phillies. MLB News: Milwaukee Brewers are an 'island of misfit toys' – and MLB's hottest team

Tanner Gordon's 6 scoreless innings help Rockies beat Cardinals for their 1st shutout of the season

DENVER (AP) — Tanner Gordon pitched six scoreless innings and Ezequiel Tovar hit a home run to help the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 on Wednesday and win back-to-back series for the first time since Sept. 13-18, 2024. Gordon (2-2) gave up four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Jimmy Herget threw two innings of one-hit relief before Tyler Kinley pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. The trio combined for Colorado's first shutout of the season. The Rockies hit five consecutive singles in their four-run second inning off St. Louis starter Andre Pallante (5-7) and Jordan Beck added an RBI double in the fifth to make it 5-0. Tovar's solo shot in the eighth capped the scoring. Germán Márquez, who was scheduled to start for Colorado, was moved to the 15-day IL earlier Wednesday due to right biceps tendinitis. The Cardinals snapped their streak of scoring at least four runs in 11 straight games at Coors Field since Oliver Marmol became manager in 2021. Ryan McMahon drew a leadoff walk and, after Tovar flied out, Austin Nola, Kyle Farmer, Adael Amador, Tyler Freeman and Mickey Moniak hit five consecutive singles to give the Rockies a 4-0 lead in the second. Colorado, which was an MLB-worst 22-74 at the All-Star break, is 4-2 since their return. The Rockies have won as many series since the break (two) as they did prior to it. Up next Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA) is set to pitch for St. Louis on Thursday against Yu Darvish (0-2, 6.08) in the first of four games against San Diego. Kyle Freeland (2-10, 5.19) takes the mound Friday for Colorado against the Baltimore Orioles, who haven't announced a starter. ___
