A scar I will never heal from: Survivor

Time of India10-06-2025
Jaipur: What began as a joyful getaway after Eid turned into a memory too painful to forget. Shahrukh, one of the three survivors of the Tonk river tragedy, said he would carry the nightmare of that picnic for the rest of his life—a day when he watched eight of his friends and relatives drown in front of him.
He said it was supposed to be a fresh start after Eid, a chance to unwind. Shahrukh, a resident of Ghatgate, who spoke to TOI over the phone on Tuesday, said, "Instead, it became a scar I'll never heal from."
The group of 11 set out from Jaipur in a large SUV in the early hours of Tuesday. The initial plan, Shahrukh said, was to travel only as far as Chaksu. "We stopped near Chaksu, unloaded our supplies, and began preparing to cook a meal.
But one of us suggested we should go swim in the Banas River nearby," he recalled.
Despite some hesitation, the entire group agreed and headed towards the river in Tonk. Shahrukh stayed back with Salman and Sameer at a nearby shrine to cook the meal. The others, including friends, walked down to the river for a swim. Minutes later, panic set in.
"We suddenly heard loud cries for help. People were drowning," Shahrukh said, his voice trembling. "We ran towards the river. Some of us tried to pull them out, but the water was just too deep. One by one, they disappeared beneath the surface."
In a matter of moments, eight lives were lost. "I can't forget the helplessness of that moment," Shahrukh said. "We tried everything, but nothing worked. It was like the river just swallowed them."

13 shops likely to open in new Trichy airport terminal

Trichy: More than a year after Airports Authority of India (AAI) commissioned the integrated terminal building (NITB) at Trichy international airport, the airport management has reinitiated the process to operationalize at least 13 shops including a restaurant in the new terminal. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This comes in the wake of the state's second busiest international airport drawing flak from flyers for limited availability of shops and lack of restaurant options despite passenger footfall constantly rising in the swanky terminal. The Rs1,112 crore building commissioned in June last year has not been successful in utilising commercial space since Dec 2024 to operate retail shops, and food and beverages outlets. While a tender floated was cancelled on technical grounds, AAI has initiated the process for a re-tender with Oct 2025 as deadline. Around 13 shops are likely to be opened by the end of the year including five commercial spaces for retail shops and a few eateries. "Lounge facility has been introduced. Simultaneously, we will complete tender formalities in three months to open shops inside the airport at the earliest," airport director Gnaneswara Rao told TOI. International passengers travelling with family have been expressing concern over lack of economical options for dinner and breakfast during their waiting time at the gates. Since meals provided by airlines are both limited and expensive, passengers have been relying on shops in the airport which often remain overcrowded. "Existing facilities for passengers are inadequate during peak hours. While additional services are planned by airlines to Mumbai, and a new direct domestic service to Delhi, AAI should focus on improving passenger amenities," A R Yogendran, a frequent flyer from Trichy, said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While domestic passenger movement in the airport is gradually improving with the airport recording historical best footfall in June, passengers want commercial outlets in domestic departure zones too since most domestic services are either in the morning or evening. The limited availability of shops had robbed Trichy airport of improved ranking in Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey conducted by Airports Council International (ACI) in 2024. Under the parameter 'availability of shops and value for money of restaurants', the airport lost ratings.

Hospitality boom heats up in twin cities

1 2 Ahmedabad: The twin cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, positioning as a strategic business and tourism hub, are all set to add about 1,000 new branded room keys with global hotel chains expanding their presence and several properties being rebranded or revamped in this region. Ahmedabad – a potential host city for the 2036 Olympics, if India secures the bid – is seeing its skyline change. Leading the change is Marriott International, which recently unveiled a revamped Le Méridien hotel in Ramdevnagar, offering 164 keys. Formerly operating as Courtyard by Marriott, the property has been redesigned with an upscale aesthetic and renewed focus on guest experience. Another Courtyard property on Sindhu Bhawan Road has been deflagged and is reportedly undergoing a complete transformation under a new brand, sources told TOI. "The Ahmedabad market is maturing fast. We're seeing demand from not only business travellers but also lifestyle-conscious guests. That's pushing owners to rethink brand positioning," said an industry insider. With office towers, luxury residences, and retail zones rapidly developing, hotel brands are moving in. Hyatt is likely to launch a Hyatt Place on this stretch, adding to its existing pipeline of projects in Sanand and the fast-growing GIFT City, as is learnt from source. "This rise in activity comes as Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar is being reshaped into a major business district. If India wins the 2036 Olympic bid, the region will likely see accelerated infrastructure investments and increased global visibility. There's a long-term view now: developers, brands, and investors are aligning to ensure that the region meets international hospitality standards," said travel industry expert Ankit Bajaj. TOI has also learnt that Marriott is in talks to add another property in the city along SG Highway under its MHRS (Marriott Hotels, Resorts & Suites) portfolio, as part of a broader push into high-growth Indian cities. Similarly, Hilton is exploring a second project in Ahmedabad following the success of its DoubleTree by Hilton at Bopal-Ambli Road. The group has already announced expansion plans across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Bihar under its Hampton brand. Email queries to Marriott and Hilton seeking specific details on their expansion plans went unanswered. In another sign of momentum, luxury hospitality player Atmosphere Core is considering entering Ahmedabad, claim industry insiders. Known for its experiential properties across South Asia, its arrival would further diversify the city's offerings. As Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar emerge as a business and administrative capital with GIFT City rising as a fintech nucleus, the hospitality sector in this market is redefining urban development and the scale of luxury offerings here. Crowd survey begins at Kainchi Dham week after Haridwar stampede

1 2 3 4 5 6 Dehradun/Haridwar: A crowd capacity survey began at Kainchi Dham in Nainital district to assess daily footfall and vehicle load, days after a stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple killed nine people and injured 45. The tourism department launched the exercise to prevent similar incidents during peak seasons and festivals, when many popular religious sites see overwhelming crowds. Tourism officials said Kainchi Dham was selected as the first location for the pilot study due to its consistently high footfall, especially in June during the annual bhandara in memory of Neem Karoli Baba. The temple draws lakhs of devotees annually and was already being monitored as a high-density spiritual site. The July stampede at Mansa Devi occurred on the first Monday of Shravan, a day that traditionally sees large turnouts, prompting urgent safety reviews at other key shrines. Under the new system, National Population Register (NPR) devices and CCTV cameras have been installed across the temple premises. A dedicated team is monitoring the number of devotees entering the shrine and the vehicles arriving in the area. Officials said the survey will help build a site-specific understanding of carrying capacity and guide the implementation of crowd-control strategies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Tourism department officials added that similar assessments would be conducted at other prominent shrines in Uttarakhand, including Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples in Haridwar, Purnagiri temple in Champawat, and Piran Kaliyar near Roorkee. "We've started the assessment from Kainchi Dham. The survey will determine the number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the shrine daily, as well as the volume of vehicles arriving in the area," an official said. Haridwar DM Mayur Dixit told TOI that a combination of short- and long-term measures had been rolled out at Mansa Devi temple following the stampede. "We have discussed a long-term redevelopment plan with senior officials, which includes widening of the pedestrian route and overall infrastructure upgrades at the temple. A detailed proposal has also been sent for consideration under the Kumbh Mela budget," he said. As part of immediate safety steps, all shops located within the temple complex and along the pedestrian route have been shut. A primary health centre will be built on-site to handle medical emergencies. The administration has also created a designated holding area within the premises and sealed the rear gate for routine use—it will now be used only as an emergency exit. To improve access and crowd movement, encroachments have been removed from the temple's approach routes. Authorities are also planning to install a permanent police check post in the area. The temple committee has been asked to deploy private security personnel and sanitation workers to ensure hygiene and order during busy hours. Dixit said a proposal had been submitted to repair and upgrade the hill bypass route to help manage pilgrim flow during peak seasons. He added that the entire temple and surrounding walkways would soon be brought under full CCTV surveillance for real-time crowd management and rapid emergency response. Officials said the survey results will help develop customised crowd management plans based on each site's topography and infrastructure. The goal is to ensure a safer, more organised pilgrimage experience for devotees, particularly during high-traffic days such as festivals and melas.
