2 Nigerians among 6 arrested for running lottery scam in Delhi

Six people, including two Nigerian nationals, were arrested for allegedly duping people by selling them forged lottery tickets, the Delhi Police said Sunday. The operation started on July 7, when a Crime Branch team raided a location in Central Market, Lajpat Nagar, on a tip-off about a fake lottery scheme, and arrested Shahid Raza, 45. 'He revealed that victims were duped through fake lottery schemes and were induced to transfer money into designated accounts. They were promised significant wins in returns. These funds were subsequently withdrawn by Raza and handed over to his Nigerian associates,' said Vikram Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime). Raza revealed the name of the Nigerian mastermind, Shedrack Onainor, 29, who was allegedly residing illegally in India. The police conducted a raid at Khanpur and arrested Onainor. 'Onainor arrived in India on a medical visa in 2013, which expired in 2018, but he continued to stay illegally and engaged in cheating Indian citizens by luring them with fake lotteries, gifts, and parcels to earn easy money. He operated with his Nigerian associates and collected cheated money from Indian accomplices Raza and his son-in-law Shahrukh, which was later shared among his Nigerian partners,' DCP Singh said. The police said that Onainar disclosed that he had been running the scam since 2023, after meeting another Nigerian national, Liberty, in Delhi. 'Liberty arrived in India on a business visa in 2023. Although his visa expired the following year, he continued to reside in the country unlawfully. During this period, he became actively involved in fraudulent schemes, duping Indian citizens by luring them with fictitious offers of high-value gifts, lottery winnings, and parcels, as a means to generate illicit income,' DCP Singh said. On Onainor's instance, the police arrested Liberty from his house in Mehrauli. The police said Liberty revealed that he would travel across Delhi in an autorickshaw to collect the defrauded amount in cash from Shahrukh and Raza. On July 10, the police arrested Shahrukh, who subsequently revealed the names of two more associates, Rakesh and Vikas. The brothers would facilitate the creation of SIM cards that would later be used to set up mule accounts, according to the police. 'They fraudulently altered Aadhaar addresses (to Delhi-based locations), obtained new SIM cards, and opened 1820 bank accounts in Vikas's name using forged documents,' said DCP Singh. The police said Shahrukh and Raza would then create UPI addresses based on these accounts and use them to transfer the defrauded money. Shahid would then take out the cash and hand it out to his Nigerian associates, they added. On Shahrukh's instance, the police arrested Rakesh and Vikas on July 17.

Delhi Police busts transnational lottery scam; two Nigerians among six held

NEW DELHI: A well-oiled transnational racket that duped Indians through fake online lotteries and prize schemes has been busted by Delhi Police's Crime Branch, leading to the arrest of six individuals, including two Nigerian nationals illegally residing in India. The syndicate, which had been operating in the capital and NCR region for several years, was unearthed following a targeted surveillance operation based on specific intelligence inputs received earlier this month. 'Shahid Raza was apprehended from Punjabi Bagh while in possession of Rs 3.63 lakh in cash, nine ATM cards and a mobile phone containing incriminating data. His interrogation revealed a deep-rooted network involving both Indian and foreign nationals of Nigerian origin,' said Vikram Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch). The police then apprehended Shedrack Onainor from Khanpur while he was allegedly collecting cheated money. Onainor, who originally came to India in 2013 on a medical visa, had been overstaying since 2018. Subsequent arrests included Raza's son-in-law, Shahrukh Khan, and brothers Vikas and Rakesh from Bareilly. Another Nigerian national, Sunday John, alias Liberty, who overstayed his business visa, was also arrested. 'Teams seized multiple mobile phones, Aadhaar and PAN cards, cheque books, passbooks, and other items linked to the cheating racket,' the DCP said. 'The Nigerian handlers — Onainor and Sunday — acted as masterminds, luring victims through fake online lottery and prize announcements. Once a victim transferred the money into designated accounts, the Indian accomplices managed its withdrawal and delivery,' Singh said. Raza and Shahrukh managed the cash operations. Vikas and Rakesh facilitated account creation using forged Aadhaar cards and fake SIMs, while Shahrukh generated UPI IDs and handled digital transfers. 'The ATM cards linked to these accounts were handed over to Shahrukh and Shahid,' he added. 'All six accused have been remanded to judicial custody,' police said.

Tipu Pathan gang member killed in encounter near Solapur

PUNE: A key member of the Tipu Pathan gang, Shahrukh alias Atti Rahim Shaikh (23), was shot dead by Pune city police during a retaliatory firing operation in Lamboti near Solapur in the early hours of Sunday. The operation was carried out by units 5 and 6 of the crime branch. Shaikh, wanted in several serious criminal cases including those under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), had been absconding. He was tracked to Lamboti village, where he had been staying at his cousin's house for the past 20 days. According to police, a six-member crime branch team, along with local personnel from Mohol police station, reached the location around 3:30 am. With the help of a local woman, they approached the ground-plus-one structure where Shaikh was staying on the first floor with his wife and children. 'When the door was opened by Shaikh's wife, officers asked for his whereabouts. Sensing trouble, both started shouting. Assistant Police Inspector (API) Madan Kamble requested Shaikh to surrender, but his wife allegedly pushed the officer. Taking advantage of the distraction, Shaikh brandished a firearm and threatened to shoot,' a senior officer said. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, Shaikh opened fire. In retaliation, police fired back. An initial round struck him in the thigh, but he continued to shoot while using his children as cover. In the ensuing exchange, Shaikh was critically injured. He was rushed to Solapur Government Hospital, where he died during treatment. Some policemen sustained minor injuries in the operation. 'Shaikh fired at the police team while resisting arrest. Our officers returned fire in self-defence. He sustained injuries to vital organs and later died during treatment,' said Pankaj Deshmukh, (ACP Crime), Pune. Police said five rounds were fired during the encounter, of which two were by the police. 'The exact number of rounds fired is yet to be ascertained. We are waiting for the post-mortem report,' said Nikhil Pingale, (DCP Crime). Shaikh was a notorious figure in Pune's underworld and had been booked in 15 criminal cases since 2011. These included charges of extortion, attempted murder, and land grabbing. He was earlier booked under MCOCA in 2021 and again in 2025 for his involvement in a criminal conspiracy linked to the Kalepadal attempted murder case. He and 17 others were booked in the case, with nine arrested so far. Shaikh was among the eight who remained absconding. Police recovered two country-made pistols, one of which was used by the accused, along with nine live rounds and two koytas from the house. Following the encounter, Shaikh's father, Rahim Hasan Shaikh, alleged that the police staged a fake encounter. 'My son had given up crime and started a footwear business. The police wrongly booked him under MCOCA in a scuffle case and harassed him. That's why he had gone into hiding for the past three months,' he claimed. Meanwhile, based on a complaint filed by API Kamble, the Mohol police registered a case of an attempt to murder against Shaikh and his wife. The case has been filed under sections 109, 132, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), section 3(25) of the Arms Act, and sections 37(1)(3) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.

A scar I will never heal from: Survivor

Jaipur: What began as a joyful getaway after Eid turned into a memory too painful to forget. Shahrukh, one of the three survivors of the Tonk river tragedy, said he would carry the nightmare of that picnic for the rest of his life—a day when he watched eight of his friends and relatives drown in front of him. He said it was supposed to be a fresh start after Eid, a chance to unwind. Shahrukh, a resident of Ghatgate, who spoke to TOI over the phone on Tuesday, said, "Instead, it became a scar I'll never heal from." The group of 11 set out from Jaipur in a large SUV in the early hours of Tuesday. The initial plan, Shahrukh said, was to travel only as far as Chaksu. "We stopped near Chaksu, unloaded our supplies, and began preparing to cook a meal. But one of us suggested we should go swim in the Banas River nearby," he recalled. Despite some hesitation, the entire group agreed and headed towards the river in Tonk. Shahrukh stayed back with Salman and Sameer at a nearby shrine to cook the meal. The others, including friends, walked down to the river for a swim. Minutes later, panic set in. "We suddenly heard loud cries for help. People were drowning," Shahrukh said, his voice trembling. "We ran towards the river. Some of us tried to pull them out, but the water was just too deep. One by one, they disappeared beneath the surface." In a matter of moments, eight lives were lost. "I can't forget the helplessness of that moment," Shahrukh said. "We tried everything, but nothing worked. It was like the river just swallowed them."
