Petronas to make major announcements at SOGCE
KOTA KINABALU (June 12): Petronas is expected to make several major announcements during the 12th Sabah Oil, Gas & Energy Conference & Exhibition (SOGCE), said Sabah Oil & Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC) chief executive officer Datuk Harun Ismail.
'I believe this year's SOGCE will be a very important event because I've heard that Petronas is planning to make significant announcements there,' Harun said at a press conference held at the SOGDC office in Wisma Innoprise today.
He added that there may be two or three announcements by Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) senior vice president Datuk Ir Bacho Pilong.
'I'm not sure what the announcements will be, but I understand they will be good news for Sabah,' he said.
SOGCE 2025 is scheduled to take place from July 3 to 4 at the Sabah International Convention Centre, with the theme 'Fostering Collaboration, Paving Sustainable Opportunities.'
The annual event is the only oil, gas, and energy-focused conference and exhibition held in Sabah, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders.
Organising chairperson Dolly Jimayol said the conference will span one and a half days and feature high-level discussions, including on sustainability pathways and the emerging blue economy.
She added that the exhibition will run concurrently, showcasing innovations and technologies from 90 local and international companies in the energy sector.
'This year's SOGCE remains a platform for business matching, learningnand industry collaboration,' Dolly said. 'We will also host youth engagement programmes and B2B meeting platforms.'
'SOGCE isn't just a business event — it's a catalyst for Sabah's economic development. We urge local oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies, SMEs, youth, university and secondary school students, and the public to attend,' she added.

Kota Kinabalu: Students and recent graduates from Sabah gained invaluable exposure to the energy sector through interactive workshops and mentoring sessions during the recent Sabah Oil, Gas and Energy Conference and Exhibition (SOGCE). The two-day programme equipped participants with practical knowledge of oil and gas exploration, production concepts and emerging career opportunities in the industry. Students from City University and SMK St Francis Convent (M) experienced real-world petroleum science through hands-on experiments that brought complex energy concepts to life. The sessions inspired curiosity and critical thinking while exposing students to practical energy applications they had never encountered before. Students and recent graduates benefited from direct mentoring by senior industry professionals, gaining insights into emerging opportunities, professional grooming and career development pathways. The programme also provided crucial upskilling opportunities to help participants stay ahead of industry trends and market demands. The initiative was organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Kuala Lumpur Section in collaboration with the SPE Sabah Section, reflecting their commitment to nurturing Sabah's future energy leaders. The partnership reinforced SOGCE's inclusivity goals and aligned with its theme Fostering Collaboration, Paving Sustainable Opportunities. Two specialised programs delivered these benefits, namely the Energy4Me STEM Bootcamp, which provided hands-on energy education to school children and the Energy Career Aspiration Networking Series (ECANS), which offered mentoring for university students and young professionals. SPEKL Chairman Anwarudin Saidu Mohamed said the society has been developing industry-ready talent since 1980. With some 2,000 members across the upstream value chain, SPEKL conducts around 50 programs annually targeting diverse communities. 'SPEKL has dedicated significant resources to community outreach and empowerment, particularly in education and energy-related community projects,' Anwarudin said. The Energy4Me programme was led by Energy Education Chairpersons Eur Ing, Harvin Kaur and Badrul, with essential support from volunteers from the SPE Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Student Chapter, who guided students through each activity. ECANS was coordinated by Syafiq Jalis, Sulaiman, Niqmatullah, Ikhwan Sunoto and Hazwan Hairollah, connecting young Sabahans with experienced industry mentors. Both programs received sponsorship from Midas Events Management, showing private sector commitment to developing Sabah's energy workforce and ensuring sustainable growth in the region's vital energy industry.

Safeguard against fake participation in oil and gas: Non-Sabahan companies using drivers, cleaners as equity holders

I know many do this. That is over now. We need serious, genuine local participation.' Kota Kinabalu: Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) President Datuk Allan Keripin Nangkai said Sarawak's century-long experience in oil and gas will be useful when partnering with Sabah companies. 'We have been in oil and gas for more than 100 years. Some of our companies are well established. We want to team up with Sabahan companies to share our experience and help them grow,' he said during the forum's question and answer session. He said this at the recent Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) – Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Oil and Gas Business Opportunities Forum at the ITCC Grand Ballroom. When asked about using Sarawak's Petros licenses in Sabah, SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd's Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) and Corporate Executive Director Terry Biusing pointed out partnership while maintaining Sabah's streamlined approach. 'My advice is to work with Sabahan companies. Get them to apply for the license,' he said. He said Sabah deliberately chose not to create duplicate licensing systems, instead focusing on monitoring and transparency through existing Petronas frameworks. 'We do not want to create another unnecessary level of control. We want to work with Petronas,' Terry said, pointing out SMJ Energy's efficient, results-focused approach that delivers through policy changes rather than adding more bureaucracy. As the sector continues to grow, with companies now exporting services beyond Sabah, the State is well-positioned to become not just Malaysia's energy hub, but a regional centre of excellence for oil and gas services. 'The opportunity is huge. We spend about RM7 billion annually on oil and gas in Sabah. That opportunity is there for Sabah,' he said. Petronas, Baker Hughes partner on Asia energy growth, transition
KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Nasdaq-listed energy technology firm Baker Hughes have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore business opportunities aimed at advancing Asia's energy expansion and transition goals. Under the agreement, both companies will work together to enhance liquefied natural gas services and cross-border talent development, strengthening local operational capabilities across the region. They will also explore digital and artificial intelligence-driven energy solutions, promote sustainable technologies in carbon capture, utilisation and storage, and together expand the use of biofuels and lubricants in the turbomachinery supply chain. Petronas senior vice president of projects, technology and health, safety, security and environment Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof said the expanded partnership would enable both companies to accelerate decarbonisation and innovation in energy delivery. "Our extended strategic partnership with Baker Hughes is poised to drive excellence in project delivery, decarbonisation, supply chain resilience, and technology adoption. "It signifies what is possible when two industry leaders unite to foster innovation ecosystems and shape the future of energy. Furthermore, the setting up of an enhanced aeroderivative facility here is a positive development towards the region's cleaner energy pursuit," he said in a statement today. Baker Hughes chairman and chief executive officer Lorenzo Simonelli said this collaboration is an important step to grow alongside customers in Asia-Pacific and also a localisation effort in developing reliable, secure and lower-carbon energy. As a first step, the firm plans to expand its gas technology services facility in Malaysia to include a full aeroderivative gas turbine module repair service, covering disassembly, assembly, grinding, and testing capabilities, which will support over 600 installed gas turbines in the region. Baker Hughes currently operates two turbomachinery facilities in Port Klang and a Kuala Lumpur-based iCenter that provides diagnostics for turbomachinery equipment. The company is assessing the best location for its new expanded gas turbine services footprint in Malaysia.
