Airport issues new SOP to tackle laser interference
At least 13 such incidents were reported between Jan and April, prompting urgent coordination between law enforcement and local administrative units.
Under the revised protocol, Bidhannagar cops have been directed to act immediately upon any laser interference report filed by the airport operator. "In case of a laser interference reported by us to NSCBI airport police station, they should immediately inform the police station or district administration concerned to identify the source of the light and take appropriate action under relevant laws.
Once the violators are identified and the laser activity is stopped, a report has to be forwarded to the airport director," said an airport official.
Cops patrolling around the airport have also been advised to keep a vigil on the use of lasers in the vicinity. If there is any request for a laser show or laser illumination, the cops shall not approve it. A laser light — often originating from nearby ceremonial events, like weddings, festivals, and circuses — can momentarily blind a pilot, leaving him incapacitated until vision is restored after a while.

This is hazardous during the landing procedure when a plane descends 1,500 ft-2,000 ft per minute.
"The problem is more acute when the pilot concentrates on the runway and then the laser lights cause distraction, causing temporary blindness," said an airline official. Municipal bodies of NKDA, Bidhannagar, Dum Dum, Madhyamgram, Barasat, and Barrackpore have been tasked with increasing public awareness through regular campaigns and advertisements, emphasizing the legal and safety ramifications of unauthorised laser use.
According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)'s mandate, laser lights are banned within an 18.5-km radius of an airport. Bidhannagar cops have repeatedly stressed that laser shows are banned within its jurisdiction and a large part of Barrackpore Commissionerate's territory. "There is a complete ban. We have also asked officers in charge of all police stations in our area to hold meetings with banquet operators and remind them that their licence will be cancelled if they continue to use such lights," said an officer.
The SOP also directs prominent signage banning laser usage be mandatorily displayed at puja pandals, banquet halls, hotels, and circus tents.

'Reassuring isn't it, to ... ': Not just Trump, Bill Clinton also among 50 who wrote birthday note to Jeffrey Epstein; WSJ reveals new details
Bill Clinton and Donald Trump Former US President Bill Clinton was among the many individuals who sent a birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein on the occasion of his 50th birthday in 2003, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Epstein, a convicted sex offender and financier, died in jail in 2019 after being arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges. The birthday messages were part of an album compiled by Epstein's former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell . According to the Wall Street Journal report, Clinton's message appeared alongside nearly 50 others, including notes from well-known celebrities and business figures. "The biggest name in the album" was Bill Clinton, the report said. The letter from Clinton, as reported by WSJ, read: "It's reassuring isn't it, to have lasted as long, across all the years of learning and knowing, adventures and [illegible word], and also to have your childlike curiosity, the drive to make a difference and the solace of friends. " Last week, the Wall Street Journal had reported that American President Donald Trump also contributed a letter to the same birthday album. Trump's note was described by the newspaper as "bawdy." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo The letter was written in 2003, when Epstein turned 50, and was included in a professionally bound book assembled by Maxwell. In response to the reporting, Trump has filed a libel and slander lawsuit against the paper's owner, Rupert Murdoch, two Wall Street Journal reporters, and the newspaper's publisher, Dow Jones. In Thursday's article, the Wall Street Journal provided further details on the album and named some of the nearly 50 individuals who wrote messages to Epstein. These reportedly include billionaire investor Leon Black, fashion designer Vera Wang, billionaire media owner Mortimer Zuckerman, billionaire former Victoria's Secret owner Les Wexner, attorney Alan Dershowitz, model scout Jean-Luc Brunel, and billionaire former Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold. The book had several volumes and a table of contents that grouped contributions under various categories such as "Friends," "Science," "Brooklyn," and "Family." Clinton and Trump were listed in the "Friends" section, according to the newspaper. The Wall Street Journal also reported that while some of the messages in the book were straightforward birthday wishes, others included crude jokes related to sex. The newspaper reviewed the contents of the album, which had been professionally organized and preserved. Epstein, who had connections with several high-profile individuals across different fields, had received messages from people in politics, business, fashion, and science, the report said. Thursday's article was published as Donald Trump's administration continues to deal with questions over the handling of the investigation into Epstein's death. Epstein was found dead in his jail cell in 2019. The Department of Justice later concluded that the death was a suicide. The circumstances surrounding Epstein's connections and his death remain the subject of public and legal scrutiny. Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in a federal jail in August 2019, one month after being arrested on sex trafficking charges. In 2021, Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted for assisting Epstein in the sex trafficking of teenage girls and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. The US Department of Justice has stated it intends to meet with Maxwell to determine whether she has any information about other individuals who may have been involved in the trafficking network targeting teenage girls and young women. Maxwell has continued to deny any wrongdoing. She remains the only person to be criminally charged by prosecutors in connection with Epstein's sex trafficking operation, which involved the abuse of more than 200 teenage girls and young women over several years.

Witnesses shot, silenced, ignored: SC flags 'eyes and ears' of justice system, seeks real protection beyond schemes
Following the murder of a double murder witness in Delhi, the Supreme Court emphasized the critical need for witness protection. Legal experts are urging the strict implementation of the witness protection program. NEW DELHI: It's been over two weeks since armed assailants shot dead a double murder witness inside his car in southwest Delhi. In the last one year, witnesses in three cases have been killed and several have faced intimidation. With the apex court on Thursday expressing the need to protect witnesses and calling them police's eyes and ears, legal experts said there was a dire need to implement the witness protection programme in spirit. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Cops say that they take a lot of measures and precautions ranging from naming the witnesses in codewords in charge-sheets and providing them security cover if required. However, sources said that a more robust threat analysis of witnesses needed to be carried out in critical cases and measures taken to secure them. "This is crucial so that important witnesses are not harmed or don't turn hostile in critical cases. Any complaint of witness intimidation should be given high priority given the extent to which Delhi Police 's cases rely on witness statements," said a retired senior cop. Delhi govt notified the new witness protection scheme in April this year. It categorises witnesses into three threat levels-high, moderate and low- and provides tailored protection measures accordingly. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Compare Spreads: Bitcoin vs Ethereum CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo by Taboola by Taboola These measures include physical security enhancements, identity concealment, relocation assistance and special court arrangements. "The scheme is financed through a state witness protection fund, which is supported by budgetary allocations, court-imposed costs, donations and CSR contributions. Witnesses or their representatives can file applications for protection with the authority concerned, who will then prepare a threat analysis report and recommend protection measures," an officer explained. The protection orders are implemented by the witness protection cell of Delhi Police or the trial court, while the home department handles identity changes and relocation. The scheme emphasises confidentiality and record preservation, with stakeholders required to maintain strict secrecy and preserve records until legal proceedings conclude. An appeal mechanism allows aggrieved parties to challenge decisions within 15 days, and filing false complaints may result in expense recovery from the witness. Besides strict enforcement of this scheme, retired police officers also highlighted that witness protection was not just about short-term safety but long-term support and monitoring were crucial to ensure the witness's continued safety and well-being. "Psychological support and counselling are crucial to help them cope with the emotional impact of testifying," said a retired senior cop. Delhi Police said it had a dedicated witness protection cell at the district level, headed by an additional DCP rank officer, to implement the scheme and the cell acts on threat analysis reports. In various countries, the police's witness protection plan comprises various measures, including installation of security doors, CCTV cameras, alarms and fencing in witnesses' homes. Their identities are protected by changing their names or alphabets. In cases of grave threats, witnesses and their families are relocated to a safe location too. The US Marshals Service operates the witness security programme, which provides protection and new identities, including social security numbers to witnesses and their families.

‘Man-eater' tigress tranquilised in Pilibhit, to be put in zoo
The big cat had been frequently moving around human habitats. PILIBHIT: A tigress suspected of killing five villagers, including a woman, out of seven human fatalities since May 14 in Pilibhit district, was tranquilised around 6.30 pm on Thursday at Dandia village under Neuria police station limits. The joint operation was conducted by the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) and the forest and wildlife division. The big cat had been frequently moving around human habitats, prompting forest teams to comb 20 villages within a 25km radius. The search operation lasted seven days and was supervised by senior forest officials. Chief conservator PP Singh said pug marks found in a sugarcane field in Dandia village on Wednesday evening — about 5 km from Bithra Mandaria, where a woman was killed on July 14 — indicated the presence of the tigress. The field was immediately cordoned off. Using thermal drone cameras, the tigress was kept under surveillance throughout the operation, which was accordingly named 'Operation Third Eye'. Chief wildlife warden Anuradha Vemuri has ordered the big cat's relocation to a zoo due to its repeated intrusion into human settlements. This same tigress was earlier tranquilised on May 25 near the junction of PTR, South Kheri forest division, and Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary after it killed two farmers in Nazirganj and Haripur Kishanpur villages on May 14 and 18, respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo She was released near Chuka ecotourism zone but was again linked to a fatal attack on farmer Mahesh Verma in Mewatpur village on June 9, around 20 km away.
