Childless couple donates house to Tirupati temple

Tirupati, Jul 29 (PTI) A childless Hyderabad couple has donated their house to Venkateswara swamy temple here on Tuesday.
The TTD, the temple body, said the couple donated their house, inspired by a similar donation made by late IRS officer, YVSS Bhaskar Rao.
'T Kanaka Durga Prasad and T Sunitha Devi, residents of Vasanthapuri Colony in Hyderabad donated their house measuring 250 square yards worth Rs 19 lakhs to Sri Venkateswara Swamy," said the press release.
The childless couple executed a will to transfer the ownership of their house to Sri Venkateswara Swamy, a move highlighting their deep devotion, said TTD.
The documents were handed over to TTD additional executive officer Ch Venkaiah Chowdary at his office in Tirumala.

Cracks in Mangaluru-Madikeri NH275 retaining wall spark landslide fears; residents evacuated
MADIKERI: The first landslide-prone spot on the Mangaluru-Madikeri NH275 that caved in during the 2018 floods is once again under threat, with the multi-crore retaining wall at the site developing major cracks. Residents living right below the wall have been asked to shift to a relief center in Madikeri. Permanent relief work across the Mangaluru-Madikeri National Highway, which has become vulnerable to landslides and road slips, has remained a distant dream from 2018. While crores of funds have been sanctioned for temporary relief works, the National Highway faces the threat of collapse and poses a risk to commuters every monsoon season. This highway is lined with several retaining walls, including the Rs 7.5 crore retaining wall behind DC Office that also faced the threat of collapse and is currently being strengthened. Another retaining wall on this road is located about 4 km from Madikeri city centre and was sanctioned after a major landslide on the road in 2018. Thousands of sandbags were then lined across this vulnerable spot and crores of funds were released for the establishment of the retaining wall. After over five years of project sanction, the retaining wall recorded was completed in 2023. Nevertheless, just two years after its completion, massive cracks have developed on the retaining wall that faces the threat of collapse. Following the development of cracks, Madikeri taluk tahashildar visited the spot and requested the families residing below the retaining wall to shift to a relief centre. Meanwhile, the locals voiced against the authorities for poor quality work and urged them to take action against the concerned contractor. DC Venkat Raja visited the spot and inspected the retaining wall.

MCD approves installation of ingesta plant at Ghazipur slaughterhouse
New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi has told National Green Tribunal that its standing committee has approved the installation of an ingesta plant at Delhi's lone slaughterhouse in Ghazipur that has remained shut since May 30, 2022, for flouting environmental norms. MCD said that after the work order has been issued and it will take three to six months to complete the plant's installation. The ingesta plant helps in handling large quantities of paunch waste and dung generated at the slaughterhouse. The senior counsel appearing for MCD has submitted that the "meeting of the standing committee was held on July 16", when it approved the proposal and the work order will be issued in two weeks. The RO plant was installed by the concessionaire of the slaughterhouse on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis. After multiple efforts, MCD was successful in identifying an agency for running the ingesta plant project last year. "But the project was costing around Rs 6 crore and it needed approval from the standing committee," an official earlier said. The abattoir has a capacity of slaughtering 15,000 animals per day in three shifts. It became operational in 2009 after the old slaughterhouse at Idgah was shifted to Ghazipur.

Mega disaster management drill at 55 spots in Delhi-NCR on Friday
Last Updated: New Delhi, July 31 (PTI) A mega disaster management mock drill in Delhi-NCR will be conducted at more than 55 locations including markets, schools and hospitals on Friday. The district officials in Delhi said all preparations are in place for the exercise that will be participated by hundreds of disaster management personnel, first responders as well as members of non-governmental organisations, market associations and resident welfare associations. The drill will be conducted in all 11 districts of Delhi, along with Ghaziabad and Noida in Uttar Pradesh, and Faridabad, Gurugram, Palwal, Nuh and Rewari in Haryana to strengthen coordination and response mechanisms for major disasters like earthquakes and industrial chemical hazards, the officials said. 'The exercise will be conducted at four to six locations in each district. Members of all the government agencies have been instructed and rehearsals for the disaster management modules have already been conducted," said a senior Delhi government officer. The field-level drill will mark the culmination of a multi-agency 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra' designed to enhance emergency response coordination in the National Capital Region (NCR) covering 18 districts in Delhi, Haryana and UP. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said the mock drill will simulate a major earthquake scenario and test real-time preparedness, inter-agency coordination and public response mechanisms. All necessary preparations have been made to conduct the mock drill smoothly in all 11 districts of Delhi. This is a crucial step towards building a resilient city capable of handling major disasters, an advisory from DDMA said. As part of the exercise, residents may witness increased movement of emergency vehicles including ambulances, fire tenders, police vans and Army trucks. Sirens and public address systems may be used to signal the start of the drill. Temporary facilities like incident command posts, staging areas, relief camps and medical aid posts have also been set up. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), armed forces, civil defence, Delhi Police and other stakeholders will carry out simulated rescue operations, casualty evacuations and medical assistance to the mock victims, officials said.
