Pakistani who allegedly plotted US attack extradited from Canada
Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was arrested in Canada in September.
According to a criminal complaint, Khan planned to travel to New York and carry out a mass shooting in support of the Islamic State (IS) at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn on the October 7 anniversary of the deadly 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.
'He planned to use automatic weapons to kill as many members of our Jewish community as possible, all in support of IS,' US Attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement.
Khan allegedly revealed his plans in conversations with conspirators who were actually undercover law enforcement officers, the Justice Department said.
He was taken into custody by Canadian authorities in the municipality of Ormstown some 12 miles (19 kilometres) from the US-Canada border. Khan is charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization and attempting to commit acts of terrorism. He could face a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

In April, the Secretary-General of the Riyadh-based Digital Cooperation Organisation (DCO), Deemah AlYahya, noted that Pakistan's forthcoming presidency of the multilateral body is part of ongoing efforts to position the country as a regional and global digital leader. Pakistan is scheduled to assume the DCO presidency in 2026, following Kuwait's term in 2025. "The 2026 presidency will see Pakistan hosting the Digital Future Development Initiative (DFDI) forum in Islamabad, marking a significant step in the country's digital transformation journey." "On this occasion, I am going to have three major initiatives," the minister stressed. "First, strengthen cross-border data flows and interoperability. We are establishing a cross-border data flow norm under the South-South cooperation framework. Second, inclusive digital technology development is essential, including in the fields of agriculture, medical and healthcare. Third, we need to conduct joint training of digital talents. Through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, the two countries have signed a talent training agreement. There is high urgency for digital talent training in Pakistan." Chaudhary listed cloud computing, flood warning, climate change, smart cities and other areas where China and Pakistan can achieve in-depth cooperation and suggested establishing a Digital Friendly City Innovation Centre with branches in Beijing, Islamabad and Karachi so that different branches can carry out a series of joint pilot projects. "We're seeing that Beijing is accelerating the construction of a global digital economy benchmark city and exploring the construction of a Digital Silk Road pilot zone. Pakistan is willing to work with China and all other partners around the globe to turn vision into tangible digital reality," he added.

ISLAMABAD: In a striking revelation, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday claimed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in close coordination with the military, played a pivotal role in facilitating the recently announced ceasefire between Iran and Israel – a truce that brought a halt to 12 days of intense war between the two long-time adversaries. Soaking at a presser alongside clerics from multiple religious sects on security arrangements for Muharram, Naqvi remarked, 'Once again, the 'uniform' – our Armed Forces – stood firmly behind the diplomatic breakthrough between Iran and Israel.' Highlighting the military's quiet yet crucial involvement, he said: 'While the prime minister's role was undeniably significant, let me be clear – there was a uniform standing behind him. I won't delve into further details, but the nation should take pride in this achievement.' Turning to simmering tensions with India, Naqvi assured that Pakistan had not incurred any substantial damage during recent exchanges. Recounting a particular incident, he revealed that India had launched approximately 11 missiles targeting a Pakistani military base – none of which struck their intended mark. 'At the time, around nine to 11 fighter jets were parked at that airbase,' he noted. 'But by divine grace, the missiles veered off course, leaving our assets untouched.' Pakistan, he emphasised, refrained from retaliating against civilian targets, instead opting to strike what he described as India's largest oil depot. 'This is a testament to divine intervention,' he added. 'Our intent was never to harm civilians.' Shifting focus to domestic affairs, Naqvi stressed that ensuring peace during the month of Muharram remained the government's foremost priority. He commended religious clerics for fostering inter-sect harmony and called on them to continue their efforts. 'We're deeply grateful for the religious scholars' presence and guidance. Just as the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee includes voices from all schools of thought, promoting unity during Muharram is equally vital. Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) is not the symbol of a single sect – he is a beacon for us all,' he added. Echoing his sentiments, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry underlined the importance of solidarity in upholding law and order during the sacred month and countering extremist threats. 'Religious scholars across the nation have upheld their responsibilities admirably,' he said. Bikes, rickshaws and Evs: Insurers told to submit separate rate quotes
ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan has directed insurance companies to submit separate insurance rate quotations for motorcycles, rickshaws and electric cars within a week. He passed on these directions here on Thursday while chairing a high-level meeting to address insurance pricing and policy concerns under the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Financing Scheme 2025-30. The meeting signalled the growing momentum around Pakistan's EV ecosystem, particularly as the government prepares to roll out its Rs100 billion subsidy package aimed at accelerating EV adoption nationwide. The meeting brought together senior representatives from leading insurance firms and electric vehicle manufacturers to deliberate on risk coverage, particularly concerning battery theft and theft-prevention measures for EVs. EV manufacturers such as Ezbike briefed the forum on technological advancements in modern electric vehicles, including GPS-enabled tracking, specialized battery locks, and anti-theft lock systems. Furthermore, Lithium-ion batteries, noted for their stability and suitability to Pakistan's climate, were highlighted as the safest and most eco-friendly option currently available by the EV manufacturers, giving assurance to the insurance companies for the lesser risk involvement in the electric vehicles. Addressing the participants, Khan directed insurance firms to submit separate insurance rate quotations for motorcycles, rickshaws, and electric cars by the upcoming Tuesday. Emphasising public affordability, he urged companies to propose the most competitive pricing structures, assuring that consumer interest would remain paramount in the final selection. 'This initiative, aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision, marks another step towards making Pakistan's transport ecosystem greener, safer, and more accessible,' Khan stated. 'Electric vehicles will significantly cut down urban pollution and dependency on fossil fuels.'
