Tourism in LA May Suffer Due to Increasing Wildfires
On Saturday, several reports revealed that Los Angeles is suffering due to the increasing impacts of wildfires and climate change; therefore, the tourism sector of the city may be deeply impacted.
Visitor numbers, which were already slow to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, took another blow in early 2025 when a series of wildfires swept through communities near Malibu and Pasadena.
While most of the affected neighborhoods were residential, leaving the major tourist attractions and other infrastructure largely intact, there was a drop in visitor numbers.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board told SF Gate: "With more than 510,000 Los Angeles residents and over 1,000 local businesses relying on tourism for their livelihood, we are concerned about any factors that could negatively impact the U.S. image as a preferred travel destination," according to travel and tourism site Fodor's.
The California Tourism Board (Visit California) quickly issued a statement after the fires, rejecting the common belief that the fires had impacted the city's appeal as a tourist destination.
The statement read: "Los Angeles has always been a beacon to the world, a place where dreams are born and stories unfold from the silver screen to iconic landmarks. Now, this resilient city needs your help in its recovery journey, and one of the best ways to support Los Angeles' return to normal is by planning a visit."
In addition to the fires, Los Angeles is also experiencing a drop in international tourism, largely driven by concerns over the difficulty of entering the country.
Increasing reports of European tourists being detained for weeks at border checkpoints due to visa concerns have led to a decline in enthusiasm for U.S. travel, which is a major source of incoming traffic to Southern California.

Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Launches Photography Competition to Highlight Underwater Cultural Heritage
Ali abo deshish To shed light on Egypt's underwater cultural heritage, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is launching a photography competition for amateur photographers starting Friday, August 1, 2025. The competition aims to select the best photograph showcasing one of the underwater archaeological artifacts recovered from the Mediterranean Sea, currently displayed at either the Graeco-Roman Museum or the Alexandria National Museum. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, H.E. Sherif Fathy, emphasized that this initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to raising awareness about the importance of submerged cultural heritage and highlighting Egypt's unique archaeological treasures discovered beneath the Mediterranean. He added that the competition is aligned with Egypt's obligations under the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, explained that the competition is one of several upcoming events organized by the Ministry to spotlight this exceptional heritage. Details of the competition will be announced via the official social media pages of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The competition is open to photographers from Egypt and abroad, who are invited to photograph the submerged artifacts on display at the Graeco-Roman Museum and Alexandria National Museum during official opening hours between August 1 and August 10, 2025. Participants must submit their photographs along with a brief CV to the following email address: [email protected] , no later than Thursday, August 14, 2025. A specialized jury composed of university professors and experts in photography and archaeology will evaluate the submissions, under the supervision of the competition's technical secretariat. Dr. Ahmed Rahima, Assistant Minister for Human Resource Development and Head of the Central Training Unit, noted that judging will focus on artistic quality, visual creativity, and the ability to highlight the fine details and aesthetic appeal of the artifacts. Pakistan Launches Remote Sensing Satellite
Israa Farhan Pakistan has successfully launched its advanced Remote Sensing Satellite (RSS), marking a significant leap in the nation's space exploration capabilities and scientific collaboration with China. The satellite was deployed from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre (XSLC) in China and is set to play a crucial role in national development and disaster preparedness. Engineered by Pakistan's national space agency, SUPARCO, in collaboration with the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) and MICROSAT China, the satellite will provide high-resolution, round-the-clock imaging. It is expected to enhance operations in key sectors such as urban planning, infrastructure development, agriculture, climate change analysis, disaster mitigation, deforestation tracking, and water resource management. Egypt's Gold Jewelry Purchases Drop 17% in Q2 2025
Waleed Farouk Egyptian demand for gold jewelry saw a notable decline in the second quarter of 2025, falling by 17% compared to the same period last year, according to a report released Thursday by the World Gold Council. The report stated that Egyptians purchased approximately 5.7 tonnes of gold jewelry in Q2 2025, down from 6.8 tonnes in Q2 2024, and lower than the 6.4 tonnes recorded in the first quarter of this year. Saeed Imbaby, Executive Director of the "iSagha" platform, attributed the drop to a surge in resale activity as individuals capitalized on high gold prices to lock in profits. Speaking to the 'Ayar 24' news outlet, Imbaby explained that the record-breaking global gold prices, coupled with the local exchange rate surpassing 50 Egyptian pounds per US dollar, contributed to weakened consumer demand. He noted that gold purchases in Egypt have become more necessity-driven — such as for weddings — or come from investors shifting away from sectors like real estate. These investors aim to temporarily preserve capital in gold, intending to sell within six to twelve months. This domestic decline comes in contrast with the broader global trend. The World Gold Council reported an increase in global demand for gold in Q2 2025, driven by strong investment demand, despite a drop in central bank purchases. According to the report, total global demand for gold — including over-the-counter (OTC) trading — reached 1,248.8 tonnes during the second quarter, marking a 3% year-on-year increase. Investment demand surged by 78%, supporting the overall growth. Conversely, central bank gold purchases declined significantly, totaling 166.5 tonnes in Q2 — about one-third less than in Q1. This pushed total central bank acquisitions in the first half of the year to their lowest level since 2022. Jewelry consumption globally also declined by 14%, falling to 341.0 tonnes — the lowest level since Q3 2020. Commenting on these developments, John Reade, Chief Market Strategist at the World Gold Council, said that rapid price increases reduced the incentive for some central banks to continue buying.
