China calls for more engagement with US

Express Tribune4 days ago
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday called for more engagement with the United States, and warned against confrontations between the two global powers, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry.
Wang made the comments during a meeting in Beijing with a delegation of US businesses that include executives from Goldman Sachs, Boeing and Apple, the ministry said.
"China is willing to enhance engagement with the US, avoid misjudgment, manage differences, and explore cooperation," Wang was quoted as saying.
His remarks came a day after top Chinese and US negotiators wrapped up a latest round of trade talks in Stockholm, with both sides agreeing to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce struck in May.
Wang said that China-US relations are affected by global developments and exert a "profound impact" on international dynamics.
"China and the US need to establish more channels of communication and consultation, view each other objectively, rationally, and pragmatically, and foster a correct strategic perception," he said, urging both countries to reject "unilateralism and bullying".
He encouraged US companies to maintain confidence in the Chinese market, and welcomed them to continue to invest in China, the ministry statement said.
A high-level delegation of US executives is visiting China this week and has also met with China's commerce and industry ministers.
The trip comes as Beijing and Washington work towards a summit between the two countries' leaders later this year, probably around the time of the APEC forum in South Korea from October 26 to November 1, sources previously told Reuters. Reuters

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia condemn Israeli govt officials' provocative actions against Al-Aqsa Mosque

The governments of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Jordan have condemned the Israeli government officials' provocative actions against Al-Aqsa Mosque, after Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on Sunday and said he prayed there, challenging rules covering one of the most sensitive sites in the Middle East. Under a delicate decades-old 'status quo' arrangement with Muslim authorities, the Al-Aqsa compound is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and Jews can visit but may not pray there. Videos released by a small Jewish organisation called the Temple Mount Administration showed Ben-Gvir leading a group walking in the compound. Other videos circulating online appeared to show him praying. Reuters could not immediately verify the content of the other videos. The Waqf, the foundation that administers the complex on a hillside in Jerusalem's walled Old City, said Ben-Gvir was among another 1,250 who ascended the site and who it said prayed, shouted and danced. Israeli minister sparks outcry with visit to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned 'storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli ministers, accompanied by settler groups and shielded by Israeli police'. In a post on X, PM Shehbaz said the sacrilege against one of Islam's holiest sites is not only an affront to Muslims worldwide but also a direct assault on international law and the collective conscience of humanity. 'Such systematic provocations by the occupying power, coupled with reckless calls for annexation, imperils the prospects for peace. 'Israel's shameless actions are deliberately inflaming tensions in Palestine and the wider region, pushing the Middle East closer to further instability and conflict.' The premier said Pakistan reiterates its urgent call for an immediate ceasefire, an end to all acts of aggression, and the revival of a credible peace process leading to an independent and viable State of Palestine, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions. Furthermore, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed 'strong condemnation' from the kingdom over the repeated provocative actions by Israeli occupation government officials against Al-Aqsa Mosque, warning that 'such practices fuel the conflict in the region'. The kingdom reiterated its urgent call on the international community to intervene and halt these violations of international laws and conventions by the Israeli occupation authorities, which undermine efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region, the Saudi Press Agency said. In a statement, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry condemned Wednesday's visit as a 'storming' and 'an unacceptable provocation', AFP reported. Jordan is the custodian of the site, which is Islam's third-holiest and a symbol of Palestinian national identity. Known to Jews as the Temple Mount, it is also Judaism's holiest place, revered as the site of the second temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. Under the status quo maintained by Israel, which has occupied east Jerusalem and its Old City since 1967, Jews and other non-Muslims are allowed to visit the compound during specified hours, but they are not permitted to pray there or display religious symbols. Hamas called Ben-Gvir's action a 'provocative and dangerous escalation', saying the visit was 'part of the ongoing genocide against our Palestinian people'. 'We call on our Palestinian people and our youth in the West Bank to escalate their confrontation… in defence of our land and our sanctities, foremost among them the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque,' it said in a statement.

China, Hong Kong stocks rebound after steep weekly loss

HONG KONG: Chinese and Hong Kong stocks inched higher on Monday, recovering from last week's sharp declines, as defense and banking stocks led gains. By the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.2% at 3,567.02 points, recovering from losses in the opening hour. The blue-chip CSI300 index was barely changed. The defence sector led the onshore market higher with a 2.2% gain. The banking sector added 1% and semiconductors gained 0.4%. The small gains on Monday came after markets booked their steepest losses since April last week. The bullish trend for Chinese equities has started to show signs of slowing as the much anticipated Politburo meeting and tariff negotiations with the U.S. both failed to deliver positive surprises. 'Market sentiment is becoming more volatile as positive catalysts are losing momentum,' Citic Securities said in a note, adding that investors might shift focus to defensive sectors and those more insulated from external shocks. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index was up 0.5% at 24,627.25, also recovering from last week's loss. The tech sector jumped 0.9% and AI-related shares added 1%, leading markets higher. Looking ahead, markets are awaiting new developments on the trade truce between China and the U.S. that expires on August 12. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday that Washington has the makings of a deal and was 'optimistic' about the path forward. China's trade data and CPI readings later this week will also give investors more clues about the health of the world's second-largest economy.

Ukrainian drone attack sparks fire at railway station in Volgograd region, Russia says

A Ukrainian drone attack damaged a power line and sparked a fire at a railway station building in Russia's southern region of Volgograd overnight, the regional administration said on Monday. An unexploded drone fell on railway tracks near the Archeda train station, the administration of the region said on the Telegram messaging app, citing Volgograd region's governor, Andrei Bocharov as saying. 'No damage to the tracks has been reported,' the administration said. Russian state news agency TASS reported several regional trains were delayed in the area. Flights at the regional airport in the city of Volgograd, which is the administrative centre of the broader Volgograd region, were halted for several hours before resuming at around 0300 GMT, Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia said on Telegram. Russia's defence ministry said that its units destroyed a total of 61 Ukrainian drones overnight, including six over the Volgograd region. The ministry reports only the number of drones destroyed, not how many Ukraine launched. The region's administration cited Bocharov as saying the attack was 'massive' and targeted energy and transport infrastructure. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which has staged frequent attacks on infrastructure inside Russia that Kyiv deems key to Moscow's war efforts - including on the Volgograd region which lies not far from the border with Ukraine.
