Delhi Airport To Shut Runway 28/10 For 90 Days From June 15 For Major Upgrade
The decision follows a previous attempt in April that was curtailed due to unforeseen challenges, including unseasonal easterly winds that reduced the airport's operational capacity, leading to over 400 flight delays. To mitigate such issues during the upcoming closure, the airport plans to utilise its other runways, taking advantage of the westerly winds expected during this period.
IGIA, India's busiest airport, handles approximately 1,300 flight movements daily and operates four runways: RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 11L/29R, and RW 10/28. Currently, Terminal 2 (T2) is closed for maintenance, with operations shifted to Terminals 1 (T1) and 3 (T3).
Generally, a runway is numbered at both ends, indicating the directions for landing and departure of planes. Sometimes, they are interchangeably used, like RW 28/10 is also mentioned as RW 10/28.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates the airport, had already said on Monday (May 5th) that as per the approved plan, runway RW 28/10 will be closed again from mid-June to mid-September 2025, following the peak tourist season, when wind direction is also expected to shift.

The advanced Beechcraft King Air 360 aircraft, equipped with all necessary tools to assess the accuracy and functionality of navigation systems, was used for the test. T2, IGI main runway to reopen in Sept before festive rush
New Delhi: Due to its proximity to IGI Airport 's only international terminal, T3, Terminal 2 will reopen in about two months to primarily support domestic-to-international and vice-versa passenger flow of Air India group and IndiGo . While T2 was shut for repairs on April 15, IGIA's main runway was closed for upgrading the instrument landing system (ILS) on June 15. "That runway was supposed to reopen around Sept 15, but the same could happen a week earlier. T2 is expected to reopen by Sept-end. Both will reopen in time for the festive rush," said people in the know. Once that happens, IGIA will become the first Indian airport to operate with a capacity of handling over 10 crore passengers annually (CPA), thanks to three operational terminals—T3 (4.5 CPA), T1 (4 CPA) and T2 (1.5 CPA), four runways and supporting airside infrastructure. IGIA handled 7.8 crore passengers in 2024. So apart from having spare capacity, it will see the same go up to almost 14 CPA when T2 is demolished to make way for a bigger T4. IndiGo and AI group have major expansion plans with hundreds of planes on order. GMR Airports starts operating duty-free shops at Delhi airport
Agency: New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) GMR Airports on Monday said it has started operating duty-free shops at the Delhi airport. The national capital's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the country's largest airport, is operated by the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a consortium led by the GMR Group. 'The company has started the operations of the duty free business at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi from 00:00 hours of July 28, 2025," GMR Airports said in a regulatory filing. Duty free shops are expected to provide significant benefits, especially high margin non-aeronautical business, to the company. Earlier another entity was operating the duty free shops. Last August, GMR Airports emerged as the selected bidder to develop, operate, manage and maintain the duty-free operations at the IGIA. GMR Airports also operates duty-free shops at Hyderabad, Goa and Kannur airports. Shares of the company were trading flat at Rs 90.04 in the afternoon session on BSE.
