Steps Ahead and Bundle Award bid to strengthen Derby form in Sha Tin Class Two
While there are questions about the strength of this year's Derby, won in an upset by maiden galloper Cap Ferrat, Steps Ahead and Bundle Award will be joined by Californiatotality in attempting to boost the form from the city's biggest race.
Rubylot was the first four-year-old to reappear from the Derby, but he finished eighth of nine runners behind Divano last Sunday in what was more of a warm-up run for the Group One QE II Cup (2,000m) next weekend.
Steps Ahead was sent out an $82 roughie in the Derby and was only beaten two and a half lengths in ninth, despite running into trouble twice in the straight.

The Francis Lui Kin-wai-trained gelding was a Class Three winner at the course and distance of Sunday's race in February and a solid fifth to Rubylot in the Classic Cup (1,800m) before the Derby.
'He'll be having his first run back from the four-year-old series. In the Classic Cup and Derby he ran quite well,' jockey Lyle Hewitson said.
'He probably should have finished closer if he had have got more room in the straight, so I was happy with him.'
While Steps Ahead drops to a career-low 118 pounds on Sunday, the son of Written By has to overcome barrier 10 in a competitive field of 11.
Champion jockey Zac Purton will partner Bundle Award for the first time, with the John Size-trained gelding fresh from a two-length seventh in the Derby.
The former Australian galloper won his previous start, a Class Two over 1,800m, and a 1,400m race in January.
'Obviously he won well two starts back over the track and distance,' Purton said.
'He ran a nice race in the Derby, he gets in well into this race with a light weight [121 pounds] and he's drawn well [barrier three], so he'll be a chance.'
Californiatotality will be out to bounce back from a his 11th behind Cap Ferrat on March 23.
The Tony Cruz-trained gelding is a three-time winner this term, including two at the course and distance of Sunday's race, and could be dangerous with just 116 pounds.
Alexis Badel will ride Californiatotality, who has drawn gate five.
Elsewhere on Sunday's 10-race card, Hewitson will bid to repay the faith shown by Lui and Gallant Epoch's connections in the Class Four Tsing Lung Tau Handicap (1,400m).
'I erred in judgment last time, so it's nice that I got the opportunity again and hopefully we get back to winning ways,' the South African jockey said of Gallant Epoch's last-start 12th at Happy Valley when he faded after being pushed forward early to lead.
'He has become quite a funny horse. I don't think he's putting it all in but once he gets control of a race, then he's quite good.
'Hopefully he can do that again and be strong off the front. It looks a competitive race.'
Gallant Epoch made all to brilliantly score by two lengths at Sha Tin three starts ago.

Hong Kong Jockey Club to provide ‘high-quality technical support' at National Games

Photo: HKJC This help is in addition to the HK$450 million the club will provide to the city to support its co-hosting of the Games in November The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced on Tuesday that it would provide 'high-quality technical support' to the tune of 50 million yuan (US$6.9 million) for the equestrian events at the National Games later this year. This help would be in addition to the HK$450 million (US$57.3 million) the club planned provide as the sole partner sponsor for the Hong Kong competition region. There would also be support for the National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the National Special Olympic Games in the Guangdong competition region. In a press release, the club said its contribution reflected 'its support for national sporting events and its commitment to promoting sports development in collaboration with mainland authorities'. The club said it would provide technical support to the equestrian events of the National Games in six areas: venue design, horse welfare, anti-doping measures, stable management, event service and support, and publicity and community engagement. The club would also deploy an expert team to provide support and equipment for the events, with the aim of helping to ensure the events are conducted to a high standard. In addition, HKJC would support official activities, volunteer services and promotional work in the Guangdong Competition Region. To mark the occasion, a signing ceremony was held at the club's Sha Tin Clubhouse. Among those attending were Cui Jian, the director general of the Guangdong Provincial Sports Bureau, Li Shuguang, the deputy director general of the Department of Publicity, Cultural and Sports Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HK SAR, and Yeung Tak-keung, head of the National Games Coordination Office in Hong Kong. Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Jockey Club's CEO, said the club had long been a staunch supporter of the nation's major sports events, including the equestrian events of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and the recent 19th Hangzhou Asian Games. He said the club hoped its participation would 'not only contribute to the Games' success but also further develop equestrian sport at the national level', especially within the Greater Bay Area. Cui said the club's support, including for volunteer services and promotional campaigns in the Guangdong Competition Region, had helped advance the vision of a 'green, inclusive, open and clean' National Games. He added that Guangdong and Hong Kong had always stood 'together with one heart' and he encouraged continued collaboration. The National Games, held once every four years, is the nation's largest multi-sports event. This year will be the first time Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau will be co-hosts. The National Games will be held from November 9 to November 21, with the equestrian events taking place in Shenzhen's Guangming District from November 10 to 19. The two other competitions will take place from December 8 to 15.

Harry Bentley looking forward to plum ride on ‘very competitive' Lo Rider at Sha Tin
The 33-year-old is hoping a drop in distance will be a masterstroke by Caspar Fownes Harry Bentley is relishing the chance to get on board the unexposed Lo Rider in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Tuesday as he looks to end the season on a high. The Harzand galloper was last seen running a massive race to finish fourth in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) back in March, defying odds of $19. Ridden that day by Hugh Bowman, he set out to make all the running and only begrudgingly gave up the lead at the 200m pole, ultimately finishing less than two lengths behind Cap Ferrat. While he is yet to break through from six starts in Hong Kong, Lo Rider was a two-time winner in Ireland when known as Sharinay and went close to a win when a neck second to Steps Ahead at Sha Tin in February. 'He's a good ride to have picked up, there's no question about that,' said Bentley. 'I think he's in this class as well. Obviously he's dropping in trip, which is something to consider. 'But he's definitely a great ride to have picked up from Caspar and looks to be a very competitive runner. 'Having not had any experience on the horse up until this point, I can't hand on heart say whether he'll love the drop in distance. Clearly Caspar thinks it's the right option and I totally trust his judgment. 'He's a really solid horse bringing good form into the race and he has a light weight too – he has to be considered.' Bentley has six rides on Tuesday's programme, including a pair of debutants, but he is particularly hopeful in the chances of Happy Universe in the Class Four Riding High Together Handicap (1,600m). The Jimmy Ting Koon-ho-trained five-year-old was a dual winner in New Zealand but is yet to add to his tally in Hong Kong, though it is not through a lack of trying. The Zacinto galloper has finished second on two occasions, most recently over Tuesday's course and distance back in April where he was only beaten a length. 'He's been a horse that's been a bit unlucky. Last time he didn't get drawn overly well but he's a consistent runner,' said Bentley. Bright Inheritance gets his second win! British-born Bentley is in his fourth full season in Hong Kong and sits on the 30-winner mark for the campaign. Matching his career-best haul of 39 winners is a bridge too far this campaign, but the 33-year-old is satisfied with another solid season that he hopes he can end on a successful note. 'Obviously you're always striving for more but I'm happy enough to get 30 winners up,' said Bentley. 'I'll just keep getting my head down and hopefully add to that tally before the season is up.'
