Reduce GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5%, Atchannaidu urges Union Agriculture Minister

The Hindu07-07-2025
Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu has urged the Central government to extend strong support for the revival of the agriculture sector in the State.
Mr. Atchannaidu met Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday in New Delhi and pressed for a reduction in GST on mango pulp from 12% to 5%, highlighting the distress of mango farmers in Chittoor, Tirupati and Annamayya districts.
Later, speaking to reporters, he criticised the previous YSRCP government, led by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, for neglecting farmers and failing to leverage Central schemes, which he claimed led to widespread damage to the agriculture sector. He noted that nearly 64% of Andhra Pradesh's population depends on agriculture and allied activities.
Restoration of courses
In a key development, the Minister announced that the Centre has approved the restoration of third and fourth-year B.V.Sc. and A.H. courses at the Garividi Veterinary College under Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University for 2022–23 and 2023–24, after a gap of two years.
Mr. Atchannaidu accused Mr. Jagan of staging political events under the guise of condolence visits, alleging misuse of funds and mobilisation of crowds from outside. He warned that the government would not tolerate any disruption to public order.
Highlighting recent support for mango farmers, the Minister said 3.5 lakh tonnes of mangoes had been procured at ₹12 per kg, and a proposal for ₹130 crore under the Market Intervention Scheme had been sent to the Centre. He dismissed claims of fertilizer shortages, stating that over 8.73 lakh tonnes are available in stock.
Urging the farmers not to believe misinformation spread by YSRCP leaders, he assured that the government is taking timely steps and ensuring fertilizers are available through private dealers, societies and Rythu Seva Kendras. He warned that dealers creating artificial scarcity or selling fertilizers above MRP would face strict action. He reiterated the government's commitment to putting the agriculture sector back on track with the Centre's cooperation.

Need permit? Roll out new private buses adhering to emission norms

KOCHI: In a move aimed at phasing out 'rickety' private buses, the motor vehicle department (MVD) will henceforth issue fresh permits only to private players willing to operate new buses that adhere to Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission norms. 'New permits will be issued only to new private buses. We've discussed the matter with major private bus associations which agreed to the condition. A government order (GO) in this regard will be out in a few days,' Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar told TNIE. The authorities will also curtail the issuance of temporary permits. 'Many are operating old buses using temporary permits, which is a safety concern. Private operators should now bring new buses adhering to the emission norms set by the Union government, like Bharat VI,' the minister pointed out. He said many NRIs have complained of lobbies giving false assurances that temporary licences could be acquired with old buses and new permits received later. "That won't happen now,' Ganesh said. While Kerala was the first state to limit the shelf life of buses to 15 years, the state later raised the age limit of buses to 20 years, and further to 22, considering the request of private bus owners. That even as the Union government decided to de-register and scrap all vehicles older than 15 years. Geo-fencing to curb speeding The minister said the transport department will soon introduce geo-fencing technology at select points to curb competitive running among private buses.

Botcha points out that state's law and order maintenance has gone haywire

Visakhapatnam: YSRCP MLC Botcha Satyanarayana pointed out that anarchy prevails in the state with the coalition's inefficient governance. Speaking to the media in Visakhapatnam on Friday, he said that the state suffers from lack of law and order and the ruling party resorts to making derogatory remarks against women. 'The crime rate has gone up in the state after the coalition government came to power. Rapes and assaults against women and minors have increased in an alarming manner. Also, ganja peddlers are getting the support of the government,' the MLC criticised. During YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's Nellore, Botcha Satyanarayana recalled, police imposed unwarranted restrictions and dug up roads to prevent people from gathering. 'It clearly indicates that the government is scared of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and there is growing intolerance among people,' he stated. The language being used by TDP leaders against women leaders including RK Roja and ZP chairperson U Haritha shows their audacity and respect for women, the MLC mentioned. Vizag has been gravely exploited by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his coterie by allotting prime lands at low prices. 'Lands worth Rs 1,500 crore are being given on long lease to Lulu Group. Former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy promoted IT in Vizag while the coalition is merely exploiting the resources,' he said. Students did not get fee reimbursement, farmers are not getting MSP and there is no crop insurance or input subsidy, while women are cheated by false promises, the MLC added.
