Gold gains on dollar weakness, US jobs data awaited

Business Recorder12 hours ago

NEW YORK: Gold firmed on Monday as support from a weaker dollar overshadowed increased risk appetite, while the market's focus shifted to US jobs data due later this week that could influence the Federal Reserve's rate cut trajectory.
Spot gold was up 0.3% at $3,284.49 per ounce by 1305 GMT, after hitting its lowest since May 29 earlier in the session. Bullion has risen 5.2% so far this quarter. US gold futures gained 0.4% at $3,295.40.
'A weaker US dollar and the ongoing pressure of President (Donald) Trump on the US Federal Reserve to cut interest rates' are supporting gold, said Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS.
The dollar index hovered near its lowest level since March 2022, making greenback-priced bullion less expensive for holders of other currencies.
Trump said on Friday he would not appoint anyone to head the Federal Reserve who would not support lowering interest rates. Gold gains are limited 'as risk appetite has returned to the (equities) markets following the sudden de-escalation in the Middle East situation ... and optimism on the trade deal front,' said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at City Index and FOREX.com.
World shares held just below recent record highs as the revival of US/Canada trade talks helped risk sentiment. Canada on Sunday said it had rescinded its digital services tax in a bid to advance trade negotiations, bowing to pressure from Trump.

Oil edges up as investors await OPEC+, tariff talks

LONDON: Oil prices were slightly higher on Tuesday as investors assessed expectations that OPEC+ will announce an output hike for August at an upcoming meeting as well as trade negotiations. Brent crude was up 54 cents, or 0.8%, to $67.28 a barrel at 1133 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up 56 cents, or 0.9%, to $65.67 a barrel. The market's main focus is the 411,000-barrel-per-day production hike that OPEC+ is expected to announce for August in a meeting on July 6, said Saxo Bank analyst Ole Hansen, adding that this was partially offset by potential trade deals improving the demand outlook. 'The market is now concerned that the OPEC+ alliance will continue with its accelerated rate of output increases,' ANZ senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes said in a note. Four OPEC+ sources told Reuters last week that the group - comprising OPEC and allies including Russia - plans to raise output by 411,000 bpd in August, following similar hikes in May, June, and July. If approved, this would bring OPEC+'s total supply increase for the year to 1.78 million bpd, equivalent to more than 1.5% of global oil demand. Investors are also watching trade negotiations ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff deadline of July 9. Oil prices slip on easing Middle East risks U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that countries could be notified of sharply higher tariffs despite good-faith negotiations as a July 9 deadline approaches, when tariff rates are scheduled to revert from a temporary 10% level to Trump's suspended rates of 11% to 50% announced on April 2. The European Union wants immediate relief from tariffs in key sectors as part of any trade deal with the U.S. due by the July 9 deadline, EU diplomats told Reuters. Morgan Stanley expects Brent futures to retrace to around $60 by early next year, with the market being well supplied and geopolitical risk abating following the Israel-Iran de-escalation. It expects an oversupply of 1.3 million bpd in 2026. A 12-day war that started with Israel targeting Iran's nuclear facilities on June 13 pushed up Brent prices. They surged above $80 a barrel after the U.S. bombed Iran's nuclear facilities and then slumped to $67 after Trump announced an Iran-Israel ceasefire.

HSBC raises average gold price forecasts for 2025 and 2026

HSBC raised its 2025 average gold price forecast to $3,215 an ounce from $3,015 and its 2026 forecast to $3,125 from $2,915, citing elevated risks and government debt. Gold tends to perform well during periods of economic uncertainty and geopolitical tension, which lifted spot gold to a record high of $3,500.05 an ounce in late April. Spot gold was trading at $3,348.50/oz at 1146 GMT on Tuesday. 'We anticipate a wide and volatile trading range of $3,600-3,100/oz for the rest of the year and year-end prices of $3,175/oz for 2025 and $3,025/oz for 2026,' the bank said in a note on Tuesday. U.S. Senate Republicans on Monday evening were still trying to pass President Donald Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill despite divisions within the party about its expected $3.3 trillion hit to the nation's debt pile. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that countries could be notified of sharply higher tariffs as a July 9 deadline approaches. HSBC lowers Brent price forecasts on trade tensions, sluggish oil demand HSBC said that even if gold prices ease, levels above $3,000 an ounce have reinforced gold's role as a safe haven and effective portfolio diversifier. It noted that central bank gold purchases will moderate on further rallies above $3,300 and could increase should gold correct nearer to $3,000. On the physical front, the bank said further gold price gains above $3,500 could lead to reduced demand in the jewellery, coin and small bar markets, particularly in economies such as India and China.
