Meghalaya deputy CM slams US advisory, says state safest for tourists in world
The US government had recently issued an advisory asking its citizens to reconsider visiting Meghalaya and the northeastern states due to terrorism and violence.
Shillong, Jun 24 (PTI) Reacting to a recent adverse travel advisory by the United States, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday asserted that the state is the safest place in the world for tourists.
Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, strongly defended the state's record on safety and hospitality.
'Meghalaya is one of the safest places in the world, and people of the state are known for their hospitality,' he said.
Tynsong said people who have not visited Meghalaya and met the people may have all sorts of doubts.
'Talk to those who have visited Meghalaya and met the hardworking people living in the beautiful villages of the state. These are the real ambassadors,' he said.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said the state is expected to host 2 million visitors this year, and the tourism department has charted a calendar of events for the whole year, with events like the Cherry blossom festivals among others.
The state government has also initiated a programme to induct 'Tourist Buddies' whereby tourists will be assisted by them at major locations.
'The state is recruiting 50 Tourist Buddies in the state capital itself, where they will be stationed at key tourist locations such as Wards Lake, Golf Links, and Khyndai Lad,' Lyngdoh informed.
A senior tourism officer told PTI that the state government plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore to boost the tourism sector.
He said the sector provides employment to over 50,000 people directly and indirectly and is one of the largest job providers in Meghalaya, second only to the state government which employs over 85,000 people. PTI JOP MNB

Sri Lanka to offer free visas to 40 countries to boost tourism: Foreign Minister
Colombo, Jul 25 (PTI) Sri Lanka will extend free tourist visa policy to 40 additional countries as part of its efforts to boost tourism and sustain economic recovery, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said on Friday. The move comes after cabinet approval last week to expand the current list of seven eligible countries to 40, Herath told reporters here. The Free Visa regime is already in place for nationals of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan from March 2023. The countries that are now part of the list of 40 include the UK, the US, Canada, Pakistan, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. Although the government expects an annual revenue loss of USD 66 million due to the visa fee waiver, Herath said, the indirect economic benefits from increased tourist arrivals would outweigh the loss. 'We have stabilised the economy, and through policy changes in tourism, we aim to ensure steady growth in arrivals," the minister said. Protest held against ropeway project in Himachals Mandi
Agency: PTI Shimla, Jul 25 (PTI) Protests against the proposed 'Bijili Mahadev Ropeway Project' spread from Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district to the neighbouring town of Mandi, with several organisations joining a march to Seri Ground against the project. Addressing the protesters, Manish Vats, convener of Himachal Dev Sena called for the project to be dropped, saying it would 'spoil the sanctity" of religious shrines in the name of religious tourism. 'The community will not tolerate any interference with faith or nature. In case the government is keen to promote tourism, they should look for alternative locations and spare religious places and shrines," he added. He said that for the first time, the famous Shiv Temple has been closed for devotees during the auspicious month of 'Shravan', with visitors being redirected to have 'darshan' from outside, adding that there would be no compromise with the 'purity" of temples. The Bijili Mahadev temple is located at a distance of 14 km from Kullu and it takes a three-hour trek to get there. Monsoon Havoc In Himachal: 147 Lives Lost, 235 Roads Blocked
Shimla: Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in Himachal Pradesh, disrupting public utilities and causing widespread damage. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 235 roads remain blocked, along with 56 power distribution transformers and 139 water supply schemes, as of Friday morning. The cumulative death count during this monsoon season has risen to 147, with 79 people killed in rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, and 68 losing their lives in road accidents, SDMA reported. District-wise, Mandi is the worst-hit, with 144 road blockages, followed by Kullu (58 roads) and Kangra (11 roads). National Highway 70 (NH-70) remains closed between Mandi and Kotali due to heavy landslides. Water supply disruptions are severe in Mandi (65 schemes) and Kangra (59 schemes). The report also noted significant losses to agriculture, horticulture, and infrastructure, with damage to public property exceeding Rs 1,38,753 lakh since June 20. Rescue and restoration efforts are underway across the state, but persistent rainfall continues to impede operations. SDMA, in its cumulative report released on Thursday, stated that essential services have also been disrupted. A total of 173 water supply schemes are currently non-operational, particularly in Mandi, Kullu, and Sirmaur districts. Additionally, the power supply remains disrupted in 56 areas due to damage to distribution transformers. Restoration work is underway on a war footing by teams from the Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority. Authorities continue to caution residents against travel in vulnerable areas, warning that persistent heavy rains may trigger further landslides and flash floods in the coming days. Commuters and residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay alert and avoid non-essential travel.
