Gunmen on the run after killing Eastern Cape emergency worker
According to a police statement, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the corner of Bridge and Main streets, Jansenville, at about 19:40 on 18 May
Upon arrival, they found the victim, identified as Piet Tieman, with fatal gunshot wounds to the upper body. Police opened a murder case and vowed to track down the killers.
The Eastern Cape Health MEC slammed the attack, condemning the cold-blooded killing of a frontline emergency worker. The victim had just finished his shift and was still in uniform when the shooters struck.
The MEC extended condolences to the victim's family, friends, and colleagues, and demanded that police leave no stone unturned to bring the killers to justice.
Tieman served the department for over 25 years.

Police arrested a 32-year-old woman in the Eastern Cape after she brought her three-year-old daughter's body to the Mbizana Police Station in a suitcase.
The woman left the child alone at their Mzamba home on Sunday, 18 May, while she visited her boyfriend. When she returned the next day, she found the toddler unresponsive near the door.
Instead of calling for help, she packed the child's body into a suitcase, took a taxi, and travelled about 30 kilometres to the police station. Upon arrival, she reported the death, and officers immediately arrested her.

Zimbabwean national arrested for illegal possession of medication
Police in Barberton, Mpumalanga, arrested a 32-year-old Zimbabwean national on Friday, 18 July, during a coordinated sting operation targeting criminal networks. The Zimbabwean national suspect was found in possession of explosives, gold-bearing rocks, and a large quantity of cough medication. Authorities also discovered gold-bearing material and two portable scales, raising suspicions that the Zimbabwean national suspect may have been supplying resources to illegal mining operations in the area. Police subsequently charged him with unlawful possession of explosives, illegal possession of gold-bearing material, and illegal possession of medication. The Zimbabwean national suspect will appear in the Barberton Magistrate's Court on Monday, 21 July. In response to public criticism of law enforcement efforts in the area, police leadership emphasised their commitment to tackling crime. 'This operation underscores our commitment to combating criminal activities and ensuring the safety of our communities,' said Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi. '[The] Barberton area has been our concern, and we made a promise to deal with the situation. So far, our continuous operations are yielding positive results,' Mkhwanazi added. Duo charged with possession of illegal firearms
THE uMkhanyakude District task team and Hluhluwe SAPS arrested two men for possession of illegal firearms in different areas last Friday. The men, aged 47 and 51, were nabbed during intelligence-driven operations in the KwaMsane and Hluhluwe areas. ALSO READ: Multi-stakeholder imbizo to address rampant crime The 47-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and eight rounds of ammunition. uMkhanyakude Cluster police spokesperson Lieutenant Sibusiso Mkhize said, after the arrest the operation proceeded to the Hluhluwe area where the 51-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 11 live rounds of ammunition. ‘Detective' cons Pinetown pensioners out of R500K in elaborate bank card scam
An elderly couple from Pinetown, KZN, is left shattered after losing R500 000 to a woman posing as a police detective in an elaborate scam. Donald Bristol (87) told the Highway Mail he received a call from a woman introducing herself as Detective Mudalay from the SAPS. She claimed his bank cards had been cloned and needed to visit him personally. 'I notified security at my residential complex to allow her access. She arrived at my flat, presented herself professionally and explained the alleged card cloning issue in detail,' said Bristol. The woman told him the case was being handled in co-ordination with the Pinetown SAPS and requested his bank debit and cheque cards, including Pins, as well as his cellphone, saying it was needed for the investigation. 'I complied with her request but never gave her my Pin. I have never used any form of online banking before,' he said. Over the following days, the scammer contacted Bristol on his wife's phone, instructing him not to speak to anyone as it could compromise the investigation. On May 9, she asked him to meet her at a bank in Josiah Gumede Road to receive new bank cards and collect his cellphone. When the couple arrived, the woman called again, insisting they meet her outside but was nowhere to be found. Inside the bank, staff checked Bristol's account and discovered he had been defrauded, with multiple unauthorised transactions at grocery shops, liquor outlets and designer clothing stores. When the couple reported the scam at Pinetown SAPS, they provided CCTV footage of the impersonator entering their residential complex. More than two months later, they say they have received no assistance. 'We do not know how this woman got my contact details and address. We do not even have family in the country; my family is overseas,' said Bristol. Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu confirmed a fraud case is under investigation. 'The investigating officer has obtained video footage and met the complainant to gather further information. Police are following leads,' said Naidu.
