Lena Dunham reflects on the 'insane' public discourse around her body in nude scenes on Girls as she says she's lucky that her thing was 'never to look at a picture of myself and pick it apart'
The actress and director, 39, created and starred in the acclaimed HBO show from 2012 to 2017, and frequently bared all as character Hannah Horvath to film the show's trailblazing sex scenes.
However, the frank depictions of sex stirred much controversy at the time, with particular discourse centering on Lena and her body shape, including from cruel trolls.
Reflecting on the furor in a new interview, the star admitted she had never expected the level of obsession around her figure and admitted she was 'lucky' that it didn't affect her as much as it could've.
Speaking to The Sunday Times STYLE, Lena said: 'I expected that people would have a response to the kind of sex the show was depicting or the level of nudity, but the idea that my body, the shape of my body, would become such a hotbed for discussion? It was insane.
'I can't say I was never rocked, but I'm lucky enough that my thing has never been looking at a picture of myself and picking myself apart or feeling tortured about how I looked — it's just not my area. I have my own stuff I'm tortured about, but it wasn't that.'
She added that we are now living in an 'Ozempiced-out moment', where the body positive movement has seemingly disappeared.
Last year, Lena revealed that her desire to not have her 'body dissected again' was the reason she cast Megan Stalter to play the lead role in the semi-autobiographical series, Too Much - which is set to drop on Netflix on July 10.
Speaking to the New Yorker in July about why she didn't play the role herself, she said: 'I was not willing to have another experience like what I'd experienced around [Girls] at this point in my life.
'Physically, I was just not up for having my body dissected again. It was a hard choice, not to cast Meg — because I knew I wanted Meg — but to admit that to myself.
'I used to think that winning meant you just keep doing it and you don't care what anybody thinks. I forgot that winning is actually just protecting yourself and doing what you need to do to keep making work.'
While she heaped praise on actress Megan, saying: 'I remember looking at Meg and being, like, "You are my muse. You inspire me every single day to go home and tap out pages upon pages." I definitely don't want to be my own muse.'
Too Much follows thinly-veiled character Jessica, who falls in love with a British musician called Felix (Will Sharpe) after moving from New York to North London.
Lena also happens to be a New Yorker who had a bad break-up with singer Jack Antonoff and then moved to London where she married British-Peruvian musician Luis Felber - who's the composer and co-creator of Too Much.
The eight-time Emmy nominee acknowledged: 'It's not a huge leap. But I knew from the very beginning I would not be the star of it.
'I was thinking a lot about, like, What is it that allows women to be complicated on TV and still be embraced and seen and understood?
'There's an openness to Meg's presence that I think goes a long way. She has whatever the opposite of resting bitch face is. She has resting angel face.'
She went on to emphasize that the show isn't conceived around the idea of plus-size woman finding love, with her curves being incidental to the story.
Lena explained: 'Meg is one of the beautiful women working today. She is so alarmingly gorgeous. The fact that she is not a size 0, or that she's not part of the new class of Ozempic-thin women, is not part of it...
'It's really important to me that there be a love affair between a guy and a girl where the fact that she is not teensy-weensy doesn't drive it.
'We were, like, "We don't want anyone to think we're doing a show about a beautiful man doing someone a favor."'
It comes after Lena previously admitted struggling with her frequent nude scenes on Girls as the seasons went on.
Speaking to Refinery29 in 2016, ahead of the final season of the show, she confessed her feelings towards stripping off on screen had been affected by the huge amount of scrutiny over her body that she was hit with.

Speaking in 2016, ahead of the final season of Girls she confessed her feelings towards stripping off on screen had been affected by the huge amount of scrutiny over her body that she was hit with (pictured in 2016)
She confessed: 'When I first started the show, I wasn't in a relationship, no one knew who I was, I was just kind of living for the work.
'So when I took my clothes off on camera, it was just an extension of that. It didn't occur to me that in the first season, TV critics and people on the Internet would be seeing this.
'Now, for better or worse, when I take my clothes off, I already can hear the din of the reaction.'
While she added that it wasn't only external pressure that has changed her outlook on nudity, but also her age.
Lena said: 'Part of getting older for me has actually been feeling more modest. Unfortunately, Hannah Horvath doesn't always allow for that. I hope to reprise some of her nudity in this final season with vigor'.

Prostitution scandal televangelist Jimmy Swaggart dies at 90
US televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, whose multimillion-dollar ministry and huge audience dwindled after a prostitution scandal, has died at the age of 90. His death was announced on Tuesday on his public Facebook page. A cause was not immediately given, although he had been in ill health. Advertisement The Louisiana native was best known for being a captivating Pentecostal preacher with a massive following before being caught on camera with a sex worker in New Orleans in 1988, one of a string of major TV preachers brought down in the 1980s and 1990s by sex scandals. He continued preaching for decades, but with a reduced audience. Jimmy Swaggart during a rally in Milwaukee in 1985 (Joseph Jensen Jr/AP) Mr Swaggart encapsulated his downfall in a tearful 1988 sermon in which he wept and apologised but made no reference to his connection to a prostitute. 'I have sinned against you,' he told parishioners nationwide. 'I beg you to forgive me.' Advertisement He announced his resignation from the Assemblies of God later that year, shortly after the church said it was defrocking him for rejecting punishment it had ordered for 'moral failure'. The church had wanted him to undergo a two-year rehabilitation programme including not preaching for a full year. He said at the time that he knew dismissal was inevitable but insisted he had no choice but to separate from the church to save his ministry and Bible college. Mr Swaggart grew up poor, the son of a preacher in a music-rich family. He excelled at piano and gospel music, playing and singing with talented cousins who took different paths: rock 'n' roller Jerry Lee Lewis and country singer Mickey Gilley. In his home town of Ferriday, Louisiana, Mr Swaggart said he first heard the call of God at the age of eight. The voice gave him goosebumps and made his hair tingle, he said. Advertisement 'Everything seemed different after that day in front of the Arcade Theatre,' he said in a 1985 interview with the Jacksonville Journal-Courier in Illinois. 'I felt better inside. Almost like taking a bath.' He preached and worked part time in oil fields until he was 23. He then moved entirely into his ministry: preaching, playing piano and singing gospel songs at Assemblies of God revivals and camp meetings. Jimmy Swaggart speaking at the funeral service for his cousin Jerry Lee Lewis (Gerald Herbert/AP) He started a radio show and a magazine, and then moved into TV with outspoken views. He called Roman Catholicism 'a false religion. It is not the Christian way', and claimed that Jews suffered for thousands of years 'because of their rejection of Christ'. Advertisement 'If you don't like what I say, talk to my boss,' he once shouted as he strode in front of his congregation at his Family Worship Centre in Baton Rouge, where his sermons moved listeners to speak in tongues and stand up as if possessed by the Holy Spirit. Mr Swaggart's messages stirred thousands of congregants and millions of TV viewers, making him a household name by the late 1980s. Contributors built Jimmy Swaggart Ministries into a business that made an estimated 142 million dollars in 1986. His Baton Rouge complex still includes a worship centre and broadcasting and recording facilities. His downfall came in the late 1980s as other prominent preachers faced similar scandals. Mr Swaggart said publicly that his earnings were damaged in 1987 by the sex scandal surrounding rival televangelist Jim Bakker and a former church secretary at Mr Bakker's PTL ministry organisation. Advertisement The following year, Mr Swaggart was photographed at a hotel with Debra Murphree, an admitted prostitute who told reporters the two did not have sex but that the preacher had paid her to pose nude. She later repeated the claim — and posed nude — for Penthouse magazine. Jimmy Swaggart at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles in 1987 (Lennox McLendon/AP) The surveillance photos that crippled Mr Swaggart's career apparently stemmed from his rivalry with preacher Marvin Gorman, whom Mr Swaggart had accused of sexual misdeeds. Mr Gorman hired the photographer who captured Mr Swaggart and Ms Murphree on film. Mr Swaggart later paid Mr Gorman 1.8 million dollars to settle a lawsuit over the sexual allegations against Mr Gorman. More trouble came in 1991 when police in California detained Mr Swaggart with another sex worker. The evangelist was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road and driving an unregistered Jaguar. His companion, Rosemary Garcia, said he became nervous when he saw the police car and weaved when he tried to stuff pornographic magazines under a car seat. He was later mocked by the late TV comic Phil Hartman, who impersonated him on NBC's Saturday Night Live. The evangelist largely stayed out of the news in later years but remained in the pulpit at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, often joined by his son Donnie, a fellow preacher. His radio station broadcast church services and gospel music to 21 states, and the ministry developed a worldwide audience on the internet. The preacher caused another brief stir in 2004 with remarks about being 'looked at' amorously by a gay man. 'And I'm going to be blunt and plain: if one ever looks at me like that, I'm going to kill him and tell God he died,' Mr Swaggart said, to laughter from the congregation. He later apologised. He made few public appearances outside his church, except for singing Amazing Grace at the 2005 funeral of Louisiana secretary of state Fox McKeithen, a prominent name in state politics for decades. In 2022, Mr Swaggart shared memories at the memorial service for Lewis, his cousin. The pair had released The Boys From Ferriday, a gospel album, earlier that year.

Jessie J gives health update after breast cancer surgery and reveals why she's stopped taking pain medication
JESSIE J has given fans a health update after her breast cancer surgery, revealing why she's stopped taking pain medication. Singer Jessie, 37, took to her Instagram Story today, sharing how she's feeling 11 days after the operation. 7 She wrote: 'For those asking for a health update. I am 11 days post surgery. I'm good. Missing being an active Mum / human the most. "But it's been nice to slow down and Sky is having a blast with Nanny and Grandad.' She admitted the process hasn't been pain-free, adding, 'It's still uncomfortable / a little painful but I can handle that. I'm doing my exercises and taking all the healthy things. I have been trying to eat super clean. In a surprising move, the Price Tag hitmaker revealed she's stopped taking all painkillers. Jessie - who became a mum last year to son Sky with basketball player Chanan Colman - continued: 'I have stopped all pain meds. Just not my thing. Also like to feel how it feels so I don't overdo it. I have now done a [poo emoji]." "Still have my drain. Anyone else who has had this, did you feel like you are walking around one of those dog / duck toys?' 'I carry mine on the floor when I'm home so the gravity can help the drain. Hoping it's out by the end of the week. Despite the obvious challenges of recovery, Jessie said she's trying to stay in a grateful mindset, saying: 'I am feeling positive and grateful.' She also had a message for anyone who might bump into her out and about. Jessie said: 'If you do see me out, sitting in a park or coming out of a doctor's appointment or eating or walking or anything, and I seem a little out of it. I am. It's not personal. 'I don't have what I usually have to give energy wise, understandably. I will get there. It's a slow road. For now I am taking it easy. Enjoying the slow vibes and staying positive. Lots of love.' Last week, Jessie revealed she doesn't yet know if she's cancer free after her mastectomy. The musician had the operation earlier this week in a bid to beat her breast cancer, and some fans misinterpreted a post that stated: "Cancer has all gone." Jessie said her words had been "misunderstood" and that her statement was a "positive affirmation". She wrote: "I posted a list of pros and cons of having breast cancer surgery. The first pro I put was... the cancer has all gone'. 7 "This was a positive affirmation NOT a fact. I don't have my results yet. I added the [fingers crossed emoji] in thinking people would understand and clearly a lot didn't. "A weird situation," she continued. "My fault for not being clearer. But for now I do not have my results after surgery which was only 6 nights ago. I pray it will be true soon but the journey of cancer isn't that simple unfortunately." Jessie is now taking a break from social media as she continues her recovery. "Tapping off socials for a week," she said. "Healthy and needed reset. To focus on my recovery and saying stuff that gets twisted of misread. "My head and boob hurts. Lol, Bye. Always loveeeee." After her operation, Jessie admitted she was struggling not being able to pick up her two-year-old son, Sky. She then outlined the 'pros' of the procedure, writing: "Cancer is all gone. "My nipple is where it used to be, I can watch Love Island with no guilt. "I am getting to rest and talk to friends more than ever. "My mum lives with us. Sky just being Sky. Chanan making me feel safe and the messages are 10/10. "Connecting with other people who are going through a similar time and being able to support each other." The list was then followed by a "cons" equivalent. "Not being the mum I'm used to being and picking Sky up," she typed. "The fear of not knowing if the cancer is all gone - the mental with this is... "The pain and discomfort is ok and expected but a d******d when I'm trying to sleep." Jessie explained how the only painkillers she was allowed to take were paracetamol and ibuprofen due to having low blood pressure. She did try and clear up her post at the time, warning she hadn't meant for the statement to be read as "fact" and that she is still awaiting her results. The BRIT winner added: "I'm getting a lot of messages. Saying so happy all the cancer has gone. To be clear I added the [fingers crossed] emoji as it's a hope not a fact. "I only had my surgery 4 days ago. I was just saying the pros of surgery and this situation and being positive. But I will get my results soon. "And hopefully I can post that as a fact. But for now I don't know. But I will stay positive and talk what l want into the universe." Earlier this month, Jessie revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Incredibly, she went ahead and performed at this year's Capital Summertime Ball in London on June 15. Jessie held back tears as she told the crowd at Wembley Stadium that she was taking a break to "beat breast cancer". 7 7 7
