This Morning viewers slam show over 'animal cruelty' as dressed up dog shakes live on air

This Morning viewers have blasted the show after a dressed up dog was seen shaking live on air and presenters tried to insist that it was simply 'chilly' in the studio This Morning viewers have blasted the show after a dog was seen shaking live on air. ‌ On Tuesday morning, Dermot O'Leary and Rochelle Humes were hosting the ITV magazine show when invited Bev Nicholson and her dog Mia onto the set after her pet pooch has become something of a Hollywood star after being cast in Lena Dunham's series Too Much and has even posed for Vogue. ‌ The Chinese crest was walked over to the famous sofa to the sound of Madonna track Vogue while dressed in a frilly purple tutu complete with ribbons. ‌ Bev explained: "Mia is a rescue dog, so she had a sticky start but ended up with me. She's been with me quite a long time now, she's Chinese Crest." But viewers were instantly concerned for the wellbeing of the dog when she began to shake in front of the cameras, prompting Dermot to ask: "Is she shaking because she's a bit cold?" Bev replied: "Yeah, it's chilly in here," as Rochelle cut in: "I'm glad you say that, because I'm a bit chilly with myself" before proceeding with the interview. But viewers at home were still worried about the dog, and flooded social media with their comments. One wrote: "This dog is shaking because it's cold in the studio???? How about scared & worried!! This is just wrong!" and they embellished their post with a series of angry-faced emojis. Another viewer weighed in: "Some of us disagree on this hashtag, some of us argue But all of us love animals. This is cruelty" and another said: "Absolutely ridiculous!!!! Someone give this woman a grandchild and some mental health counselling ffs!! That poor dog!!!" ‌ One fan berated This Morning for giving the item airtime in the first place as they wrote: "them actually promoting it is disgraceful they should be ashamed!!" and, another, concerned for the dog's safety, said: "The dress and blanket will be heavily weighing that poor dog down." Another angry viewer insisted that dressing an animal like that should be 'made illegal' whilst someone else suggested: "If your gonna dress mia dress her with a warm doggy coat not a daft dress", whilst another viewer said: "This is all about making money, attention seeking and having her 15mins of fame for the owner, not about caring for the poor dog, It's animal abuse." The Mirror has contacted ITV for comment. ‌ During her chat with Rochelle and Dermot, Bev spoke of how she had signed many of her canine companions to an agency but didn't hear anything for years so had given up hope that any sort of success would come about. Then, out of the blue, she received an invite to go to a casting and she claimed that former Girls star Lena picked Mia on the spot to star in her new Netflix show. She said: "I had a house full. At the time, I had seven so I put them all on the agency. But then I didn't hear anything for 10 years so I'd kind of forgotten about it and then we got a phone call asking if we wanted to go for a casting. I wasn't too sure. I didn't realise [how big the role was] at the time. Lena Dunham came out of her office, scooped Mia up and went 'This is Astrid!' "We had a few days where we were let go earlier which was nice but very long days. Most of it was sitting around waiting with lots of repetition. Very well looked after, she got puppicinos every day!" A year after filming Too Much, the pooch was asked to be in a Fergie music video reimagining for London Bridge and was then scouted to appear in the world's most famous fashion magazine. Bev explained: "They were doing a thing for Too Much and said 'They want the dog.' She prefers people, she's not nasty with other dogs, she just can't be bothered with them." Asked if Mia has retired now, Bev said: "Well, yes, unless we get a phone call that we can't [turn down]."

PU Library Buzzes 24x7, But Girls Avoid Dark Roads On Way Back To Their Hostels

1 2 Chandigarh: While Panjab University's Central Library stays open round the clock and remains lively even late into the night, several women students say they avoid walking back to their hostels alone after dark due to poorly lit roads and lack of surveillance. Two key internal roads, both commonly used by girls returning from the library, remain without CCTV coverage and have inadequate lighting. The first road, which starts near Boys Hostel No. 3, leads to the rear gate of Girls Hostels 1 and 2. The second cuts between the university ground and tennis court, connecting to the backside of Girls Hostels 3, 4 and 5. Despite having some streetlights, both stretches have dark patches, especially near tree-lined areas, and no security cameras. "There is complete darkness on the left side of the road because of vegetation, and the lights barely help. Sometimes, the lights do not even function or just flicker" said Priya Chauhan, a student from Girls Hostel No. 1. "We avoid going alone. If it's too late, we stay in the library till early morning and walk back only after sunrise." Another student questioned the university's priorities. "The Rose Garden opposite the admin block has strong, bright lights. Why can't they fix proper lighting on roads girls use every day?" said Muskan Nehra, a former student who was in campus for over 3 years. "The road near the tennis court looks fine from a distance, but once you start walking, you realise how poorly lit it actually is, especially behind the USOL building," said Yogini Pandita, a resident of Girls Hostel 4. "The sides of the road are almost in complete darkness. Even if a few people are around, you're constantly on edge. It doesn't feel safe at all." Despite the steady footfall around the 24x7 library, these two roads quickly become deserted and shadowy after a point. There is no regular security guard posted along the route to Hostels 1 and 2, and only occasional near the Chemistry canteen, the start of the road toward Hostels 3, 4 and 5. While students appreciate the flexibility of a 24x7 library, they say it won't be fully effective unless safe, well-lit, and well-monitored pathways exist to get back to their hostels. BOX- Phase 3 camera installation still pending Panjab University had planned a third phase of CCTV camera installation in December 2024 to strengthen campus surveillance, covering 10 additional locations. Among these are the two roads frequently used by girls returning from the library- one from Boys Hostel No. 3 to Girls Hostels 1 and 2, and the other from the university ground to Girls Hostels 3, 4 and 5. However, despite a budget of Rs 75 lakh, the cameras are yet to be installed. University security officials say work is expected to begin soon. Currently, PU has around 120–130 CCTV cameras, but none on these two critical routes. Chief of University Security Vikram Singh confirmed the inclusion of these routes in the third phase. "These roads will be covered in the upcoming round of camera installation," he said. BOX- 'Cameras couldn't capture number plate,' says harassment survivor Anshika Kapoor, a student who was harassed a few months ago near the Vice-Chancellor's office around 9:30 pm, said her attempts to identify the car involved were hampered by poor surveillance infrastructure. "We checked footage from several cameras, but none of them showed the number plate clearly," she said. "Only the one near the USOL building gave a partial view. If cameras can't even capture such basic details, how are we supposed to feel safe?" Her experience has raised broader concerns among students about the quality and placement of security cameras across the campus.

Netflix's Too Much: Why Criticism Of The 'Sexual Chemistry' Feels Barbed

A week after Lena Dunham's second major TV project since Girls landed on Netflix and critics have, for the most part, been surprisingly ungenerous. Aside from claims that Too Much is an 'underbaked disappointment' and 'not as good as Girls ', plenty of reviews have referenced the protagonists', Jessica (Megan Stalter) and Felix (Will Sharpe), distinct lack of chemistry. Given that the romantic comedy – which is loosely based on co-creators Dunham and Luis Felber's own romance – tracks Felix and Jessica's relationship from their first meeting to their wedding day, and that they have sex in almost every episode, this criticism rings alarm bells. What exactly do they mean? What were they hoping for? In what ways did Stalter and Sharpe, or indeed the directors, fall short on this front? The Hollywood Reporter , for one, accused the Netflix series of having 'intimacy issues', admitting that there is plenty of 'enthusiastic sex' and 'confessional conversation' but too few 'lingering gazes' or 'intense close-ups'. This seems fair. Their critic called Jessica and Felix's romance 'sweet enough to like but too cool to fall head over heels for' and writes that 'for a whirlwind romance, Too Much feels awfully dispassionate'. This I might question. Meanwhile, The Atlantic wrote that 'romance on-screen has never been colder'. The review reads, 'Two years ago, on a New Yorker podcast lamenting the modern state of the rom-com, Alexandra Schwartz noted that the most crucial quality for any romance is this: 'You have to believe that these two people want to be together, and you have to buy in.' On this front, Too Much barely even tries.' Adding that Felix and Jessica have 'almost negative chemistry', they claim the pair stay together 'out of what feels like inertia'. Let's put a pin in that one too. Elsewhere in a Reddit thread discussing the Netflix show, one user wrote that the scene where Jessica gets an Uber to join Felix's protest on the M25 and confess her love for him 'fell totally flat' and made them realise 'they really had no chemistry'. Another review for The Arts Fuse called Jessica 'an infuriating heroine who is very difficult to root for' – surely penned by someone unfamiliar with Girls – and adds, 'I wondered what Felix saw in her, especially since their romantic chemistry is sorely lacking (a point underscored by their many cringeworthy sex scenes).' Lena Dunham, Megan Statler and Will Sharpe at the Too Much UK screening. (Photo by) 'I wondered what Felix saw in her, especially since their romantic chemistry is sorely lacking.' The Arts Fuse While it's unlikely any of these critics had ill intentions, the suggestions that Felix and Jessica have 'negative chemistry', that their romance is 'dispassionate' or that their sex scenes are 'cringeworthy' feel suspicious – and familiar. In ten episodes we see the protagonists stay up all night talking about everything from their childhoods to Paddington Bear , we see them get jealous of one another, we seem them argue, we see them look after each other, move in together and slowly surrender themselves to their expansive and overwhelming feelings. In any sense, it's hard to imagine how this could be deemed dispassionate. Both Felix and Jessica are hapless, chaotic people with a distinct lack of order and purpose in their everyday lives. The fact they are drawn to each other against all odds can only be explained by the inexplicable – as is often the case in real life. Their connection is largely inconvenient and illogical, which is exactly why it's so romantic. We saw similar critique crop up after the hotly anticipated release of One Day on Netflix last year. A review in The New Statesman called the series 'a romcom without any chemistry' and decried the adaptation as 'unconvincing'. Meanwhile The Times called out 'the slightly lacking chemistry between the two main actors', Ambika Mod (who played Emma Morley) and Leo Woodall (who played Dexter Mayhew). We saw it again when Nicola Coughlan's character Penelope Featherington was announced as the romantic lead of season three of Bridgerton . Starring opposite Luke Newton's Colin Bridgerton, it didn't take long before some disparaging think pieces concluded that Coughlan does not have what it takes to be a leading lady. 'Reader, she is not hot, and there is no escaping it,' reads a particularly mean-spirited review in The Spectator. 'Coughlan is an actress of great value, and might be adored, but she is simply not plausible as the friend who would catch the handsome rich aristocrat Colin Bridgerton's eye in that way.' The difference between the latter critique and the former is that it is not so thinly veiled. What all three shows have in common is an unconventional romantic pairing as their leads, whether in terms of race, body shape or beauty standards at large. It is hard to distinguish the shared 'lack of chemistry' criticism leveraged at all three shows from this fact – even if, thankfully, it remains in the minority. Instead, it shows what actors, producers and casting directors are up against. As a forward-thinking society, we claim we want to see more diversity on screen, and for it not to become the sole focus or storyline. However, three big budget Netflix shows that have attempted to do just that have been labelled unconvincing and unromantic – perhaps the worst thing a romcom can be called. Someone who has thought about this dichotomy a great deal after experiencing it first hand is Mod herself. 'You have a double whammy in this adaptation where a lot of people who know the story and read the book or watched the film probably didn't picture an Emma who looked like me,' she told Glamour . Speaking about the wildly different receptions she and her co-star Woodall received from fans, she added: 'The romance genre can be a double-edged sword at points. For a long time, it has not been a genre that's been respected because it's mainly for women, and now it's having a sort of resurgence. But it always seems to be the male characters and the male protagonists and the male actors who are elevated from having done a rom-com, and it's the female characters who don't get the same recognition, who don't get the same elevation, who don't get the same moment.' The comment about Stalter being 'an infuriating heroine' springs to mind. As does the widespread adoration of Sharpe since the show aired. To tackle this pattern, which has in turn become a problem, it seems like society's gripes with unconventional, complex and diverse female leads is a good place to start. Until we can not only accept but embrace these characters, TV creators will be hard pushed to convince audiences that their romances are worth rooting for. Let's hope the viewing figures – an area where all three shows triumph – continue to successfully drown out the negativity. As Jessica, Emma and Penelope serve to prove, there's great power in numbers.
