Mets first-round pick could be in danger of losing roster spot this summer

The New York Mets are one of the best teams in Major League Baseball but have fallen on hard times lately, going 5-14 over their last 19 games. The good news is the Mets still sit with one of the best records in the MLB at 50-38. Advertisement New York is going to have to make a handful of moves by the end-of-the-month trade deadline if the team wants to compete in the World Series. One decision the Mets will have to make is what to do at third base, and Noah Wright from Fansided thinks Brett Baty could be in danger of losing his roster spot soon. "But like with most of the Mets' roster, Baty didn't have a good month of June and is off to a poor start in July. His last 92 trips to the dish have yielded a .188/.253/.294 triple-slash. He has only hit a pair of home runs, as his ISO has fallen to just .106. The only positives for Baty are his walk rate and K%. He's improved both to 8.4% and 23.2%, respectively," Wright wrote. "Baty's defense has at least been solid. He still has +3 defensive runs saved and +3 outs above average in just 322 innings at the hot corner. For reference, Baty had -9 DRS and -3 OAA in nearly 1300 innings at third base during his first three years in the Major Leagues. Despite playing second base for the first time in the Major Leagues this season, Baty has zero DRS and OAA at the keystone across 170 innings." Baty was selected by the Mets 12th overall in 2019 and hasn't lived up to the hype just yet. MLB Announces Juan Soto News Before Subway Series

MLB Announces Juan Soto News Before Subway Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Mets and Yankees enter the second iteration of the Subway Series in a mutual tailspin. The Mets come with a two-game winning streak and a series win over the Brewers, while the Yankees dropped to second in the AL East for the first time since April following a four-game sweep by the Blue Jays. Advertisement While Friday will be the first game of a tepid matchup between crosstown foes, Mets star Juan Soto has put his foot on the gas since the Mets' mid-May series loss in the Bronx. So much so, in fact, that the MLB made a huge announcement on Soto Friday. New York Mets right fielder Juan Soto (22)© Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Soto was announced to be one of three outfielders on MLB's June Team of the Month, along with Byron Buxton and Ronald Acuña Jr. Soto slashed .322/.474/.722 in the month of June, with an absurd 11 home runs, tying his August 2020 career-high for one month and joined Darryl Strawberry as the only Mets player in history with 10+ homers and 20+ walks in a month. Advertisement Soto failed to make the All-Star Game this year, and finished fifth in voting among NL outfielders, behind Acuña, along with Cubs stars Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker. Dodgers star Teoscar Hernandez finished ahead of him as the fourth-place finisher. Soto's announcement follows a month where he has certainly played to his contract value, and has captivated Mets fans who are excited to see their marquee star swinging a hot bat. Reliever Santillan strikes out Bohm with bases loaded in the 8th, Reds beat Phillies 9-6

Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Spencer Steer hit a two-RBI double to spark a five-run third inning and Reds reliever Tony Santillan struck out Alec Bohm with the bases loaded to end the eighth and lead Cincinnati past the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6 on Friday. Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo lasted only two-plus innings and Reds starter Andrew Abbott — both pitchers entered with seven wins — couldn't get out of the fourth. The Reds or Phillies scored at least one run in each of the first six innings and the defending NL East champion Phillies finished with 14 hits. The Reds had 11. Nick Castellanos hit a two-run homer in the first inning to help stake Luzardo (7-5) to a 3-0 lead. Luzardo pitched like an All-Star deep into May with an ERA hovering under 2.00 through his first 10 starts. He has been rocked in most of his outings since. He allowed a run in the second inning and gave up two run-scoring singles, a sacrifice fly and Steer's double in the third that made it 6-3. Elly De La Cruz added an RBI single in the fourth and the Reds tacked on two more runs in the fifth for a 9-4 lead. Sam Moll — one of seven Reds pitchers — tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win and Emilio Pagán got his 19th save. Santillan truly saved the game when he caught Bohm looking on a 98 mph fastball to keep the score 9-6. Key moment Trailing 7-4 in the fifth, the Phillies had runners on the corners with one out and Kyle Schwarber at bat. Schwarber hit a comebacker to the pitcher, who got the forceout at second. Edmundo Sosa hesitated on the basepath and got a late jump before he decided to scurry home. De La Cruz nailed Sosa at the plate to end the inning. Key stat Reds manager Terry Francona moved four wins away from becoming the 13th manager to win 2,000 games. Up next The Reds send LHP Nick Lodolo (5-5, 3.52 ERA) to the mound against Phillies LHP Ranger Suárez (7-2, 2.00 ERA). ___ AP MLB: recommended
