Crowns, chaos and chemistry: 'The Royals' reigns with romance and royal rifts

Ishan Khattar plays Aviraaj Singh in "The Royals", currently streaming on Netflix. Image: Instagram. Netflix's latest offering, "The Royals", takes viewers on a captivating journey through the ornate corridors of an imaginary princely state, Morpiur. Serving up a visually stunning feast of gold-leafed halls and vibrant traditions, this show combines Indian heritage with the universal allure of romantic drama. The premise is intriguing: a nearly bankrupt royal family, led by Ishan Khattar and his co-stars, grapples for survival when a hospitality company, helmed by the determined Sofia (Bhumi Pednekar), offers them a lifeline in the form of a Royal B&B. This innovative concept invites commoners to mingle with the royals, promising an experience that dances between fantasy and reality. It's a clever twist that is ripe for conflict and sparks, which serves as the foundation of the plot. Sofia is introduced as a dynamic and quick-witted CEO, ready to challenge the status quo. From her brisk horseback escapes to confrontations steeped in wit and determination, she embodies a fresh sensibility. Video Player is loading. Her rivalry with Aviraaj Singh, a polo-playing prince who expertly blends charm with entitlement, gradually morphs into a romantic connection against a backdrop of playful banter and cautious partnership. The character dynamics, especially between Sofia and Aviraaj, follow the classic enemies-to-lovers trope. However, it's the supporting characters that enrich the story, with Aviraaj's brother, Digvijay 'Diggy' Singh, emerging as a relatable character. He finds solace in culinary creation, while their sister, Divyaranjani 'Jinnie', navigates her path toward self-acceptance. The series also dares to explore progressive themes surrounding sexual identity and gender roles. These inclusive narratives allow for moments of colour and risk in what could have been a purely traditional royal saga. The representation of LGBTQ+ characters challenging societal norms also injects a refreshing vibrancy into the plot. Nevertheless, despite its charming ensemble and heartwarming moments, "The Royals" struggles at times with a lack of emotional depth and character development. As episodes progress, the show teeters on the edge of meaningful engagement but often retreats to a surface-level experience of romantic escapism. "The Royals" delivers a binge-worthy escape into a world of glittering palace life, complete with engaging romance and charming side stories. It successfully entertains and enchants, even as it grapples with deeper themes and narratives. If you're seeking a captivating mix of palace glamour and light-hearted drama, this series is a worthy addition to your watchlist, sure to sweep you off your feet, if only for a moment.

South African talent shines in Superman documentary

South African-born producer Robert Ford is basking in international acclaim with his latest project, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story . The documentary, which arrives on Showmax from Friday, 25 July, has earned an impressive four Emmy nominations. Recognition comes in the categories of Directing, Writing, Editing, and Music Composition. Super/Man celebrates the extraordinary life of Christopher Reeve, immortalised as Superman. Reeve rose from an unknown stage actor to a Hollywood icon. His portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the gold standard for superhero films. Reeve starred in four Superman films and played a variety of roles, showcasing his remarkable range. Tragedy struck in 1995 when a horse-riding accident left Reeve paralysed from the neck down. Undeterred, he became a leading advocate for spinal cord injury research and disability rights, according to IMDB . He balanced activism, fatherhood, and continued work in the film industry, emerging as a real-life hero. Ford, originally from Wellington in the Western Cape, reflects on his journey, 'I wish I had known more about the South African film industry at that stage. I only discovered later that SA has such a vibrant film culture.' Now based in the UK, Ford has built a global reputation across film production roles over 25 years. The Superman documentary features never-before-seen home videos and a wealth of family archives. For the first time, Reeve's three children speak at length on film about their father. Hollywood friends and colleagues also share insights, giving the story depth and warmth. With a staggering 98% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Super/Man has swept more than 30 awards. These include Best Documentary at the 2025 BAFTAs and major wins from the Producers Guild of America and Critics' Choice Documentary Awards. Ford describes the biggest challenge of filming the Superman documentary: 'We had hundreds of hours of footage. The story could have gone in so many directions, so there were lots of difficult decisions in the edit. Letting go of the scenes you love is hard; it's hard killing your babies.' He is also passionate about representation. 'It's important that those stories are heard and not marginalised,' says Ford. For Super/Man , several disabled crew and consultants played key roles. Their insight shaped the film, especially on the complex ethics and realities of disability and cure. Ford's ties to home remain strong. 'I'd love to film in South Africa again. South Africa has great filmmakers and crew, and the filmmaking infrastructure is brilliant,' he says. He's thrilled for local viewers to watch his work and Superman documentary, adding, 'It's a universal story. Behind the onscreen superhero was a real-life hero.' Super/Man stands as a testament to courage and resilience, both on and off the screen. South Africans can take pride in one of their shining moments on the world stage. New Netflix initiative offers hands-on training for young creatives

Netflix has announced a promising new chapter for South Africa's creative industry. The global streaming giant launched the ScreenCraft Pathway programme. This is in partnership with the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) and the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority. The initiative sets out to empower emerging local talent by providing practical, paid experience in the world of film and television. Applications will officially open in August. Tshikululu Social Investments will administer the programme to ensure fair and effective implementation, according to their site . The ScreenCraft Pathway is much more than a training opportunity as it focuses on real, hands-on experience. Thirty aspiring creatives from across South Africa will be selected. Those chosen will immerse themselves in key below-the-line roles. These span from development, pre-production, production, and post-production, on Netflix projects and with selected industry partners. The initiative is open to both new applicants and nominations put forward by the GFC and KZN Tourism and Film Authority. Further details about how to apply will be available soon. Netflix created this new pathway after its successful 2024 on-the-job pilot, run through the Creative Equity Scholarship Fund (CESF). Thirteen young professionals benefited from the pilot, with each gaining valuable insights and direct industry access. The ScreenCraft Pathway scales up this model, aiming to foster greater youth employment and contribute to vital skills development in South Africa's creative sector. Netflix is not embarking on this journey alone, as the programme draws strength from its partnerships with established industry players. Shola Sanni, Netflix's Director of Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa, stated, 'We're excited to introduce the ScreenCraft Pathway programme. This is to show how intentional we are about investing in local storytellers and creatives. This initiative is not only a win for our members, but also us at Netflix. It will help us grow the talent pipeline so we can continue to entertain the world and bring more of the amazing local stories our members love.' Keitumetse Lebaka, CEO of the Gauteng Film Commission, echoed this pride. 'By fostering partnerships and creating inclusive opportunities through the ScreenCraft Pathway programme, we empower young professionals to thrive in the competitive creative economy. Our partnership with Netflix contributes to cultural preservation, social cohesion, and long-term economic resilience for the province and beyond.' Sibusiso Gumbi, Interim CEO of the KZN Tourism and Film Authority, tied the programme directly to provincial goals. 'This programme is the perfect fit for our objectives, and this partnership will add much-needed value. We are directly responding to South Africa's and KwaZulu-Natal's high youth unemployment rates.' Notably, the ScreenCraft Pathway ensures all participants receive financial compensation. This maes the opportunity more accessible to aspiring talent from diverse backgrounds. Netflix's previous investments in local talent, such as its CESF pilot (valued at around R18 million), have shown real economic benefit for creatives and the country at large. Through the ScreenCraft Pathway, Netflix and its partners reaffirm their commitment to the future of South African storytelling, nurturing new voices, and strengthening the local industry's global standing.
