In my nearly two decades helping businesses navigate local search, I've seen a lot of trends come and go. But what's happening in 2025 signals a potential breakdown of the old local SEO model. And if you're still following outdated tactics, you risk falling behind and undermining your own visibility.
Here's the reality: A neighborhood bakery with great reviews and a polished website can still be buried in search results, while a franchise competitor with weaker service shows up front and center. That's not an accident, but rather a consequence of strategy, or more accurately, bad strategy. In response to the persistent challenges brands face with local search, I'll be covering how brands can develop a winning local content strategy in a multipart series.
The Local Content Deception
Consumer behavior continues to evolve, but many local content strategies remain stagnant. According to BrightLocal's 2025 Consumer Review Survey, 74% of people check review sites before choosing a local business, and 89% expect a response to every kind of review. Visibility today goes beyond being listed. It means showing up with substance, relevance and trust.
So what's undermining rankings now? Over-optimized pages packed with location keywords. Duplicated content with only city names swapped. Landing pages that once ranked well now trigger low-quality signals under modern search algorithms.
Here's what changed:
• Entity Relationships: Google understands which landmarks, organizations and businesses actually define a neighborhood.
• AI Content Parsing: The algorithm can tell whether your content reflects real local expertise or if it's just geo-tagged.
• User Signals: Google tracks how people from a neighborhood interact with your content. Real engagement matters more than ever.
Despite all this, many businesses still rely on city-name insertion as their default tactic. Some agencies continue to recommend it, even though it can put local rankings at risk.
The Integrated Ecosystem Framework
After analyzing hundreds of local search performance patterns, I realized something had to change. The tactics many businesses relied on were no longer working—and often doing more harm than good. The structure I developed is designed for how local SEO functions now in 2025, not how it worked 10 years ago.
The Integrated Ecosystem Framework focuses on building a connected system of content that establishes neighborhood relevance, demonstrates expertise, supports community presence and drives real results. Here's how to get started:
• Select three to five key neighborhoods based on proximity, customer base or growth potential.
• Identify the entities that Google associates with each one of these neighborhoods: local landmarks, businesses, schools, events, etc.
• Develop content that includes these entities naturally and offers something genuinely useful to the people who live in these communities.
The focus is on building content that reflects real knowledge of the area and addresses what residents actually care about.
Framework Implementation
Let's get specific. Say you're a plumber in Chicago. The old way? A page called 'Plumbing Services in Lincoln Park.' The new way? Try: 'How Lincoln Park's Aging Pipes Affect Modern Plumbing Costs' or 'Why Bucktown Homes See More Sewer Backups Than Other Chicago Neighborhoods.' Now you're showing up with purpose.
But it's not only about headlines. Your digital structure should reflect how your business operates. If you offer multiple service types, work across neighborhoods or have a diverse team, that should be visible on your site, in your content and across your profiles.
Try this: Pick your top three neighborhoods. List 10 to 15 entities that define each one. Then, plan three pieces of content per area that connect to those entities while delivering value to local residents. This positions your business to earn visibility when and where it counts.
Content Ratios That Strengthen Your Local Content Strategy
Over the past few years, we've tested content ratio variations across more than 400 businesses and found a structure that usually outperforms. A 3:1:1 ratio can deliver strong local visibility when applied across three content categories:
• Hyperlocal content (neighborhood-specific, entity-based)
• Authority content (educational, expertise-building)
• Engagement content (interactive, community-driven)
I've found this balance to be what consistently leads to higher engagement, stronger rankings and measurable growth in local markets.
Scaling Your Local Content Strategy
If you operate across multiple locations, you can't afford to treat all neighborhoods the same. Each one has its own dynamics, and your content should reflect that. Start by building a neighborhood prioritization system—score each area based on customer base, growth potential, proximity and competitive landscape. Focus on where traction is most likely.
Here's how to roll it out:
• Weeks 1–2: Identify your top three neighborhoods and map out key entities.
• Weeks 3–6: Develop and publish five pieces of hyperlocal content tied to those entities.
• Weeks 7–12: Evaluate performance, refine and scale to additional areas based on what's working.

Alphabet Beat on Most Metrics While it's customary for company management to say that they are 'proud' of their performance, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai began his commentary by classifying Q2 a 'standout quarter for us with robust growth across the company.' He added, 'As you saw at IO, we are leading at the frontier of AI and shipping at an incredible pace. AI is positively impacting every part of the business, driving strong momentum.' Here are some of the other key takeaways from the report. Google Search Reported Double-Digit Increase in Revenues: With all the talk of Google losing its dominance in search, the company's Search revenues rose 11.7% in Q2, and if anything, the growth rate accelerated from the previous quarter. YouTube's Performance Improved: During the earnings call, Alphabet said that it now earns as much revenue per watch hour in the U.S. on YouTube shorts as traditional in-stream. In some regions, the balance is actually in favor of shorts over the long-form videos. During the quarter, YouTube ad revenues increased 13% YoY to $9.8 billion, which comfortably beat the consensus estimate of $9.56 billion. As I have noted previously, YouTube remains an unappreciated asset in Alphabet's arsenal even though it is the market leader in U.S. streaming for the last several years, per Nielsen data. Gemini User Count Swells: Alphabet said that Gemini's monthly active user is now more than 450 million, and it saw a 50% increase in daily requests in Q2, as compared to Q1. Cloud Growth Gets a Boost from AI: Google's cloud revenues rose 32% YoY to $13.62 billion, well ahead of the $13.11 billion that analysts were expecting. AI is driving the growth of that business. Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI has also partnered with Google's cloud infrastructure, a partnership CEO Sundar Pichai said the company is 'very excited' about. AI Monetization: As expected, questions related to the monetization of AI investments did pop up during the Q2 earnings call. Responding to the question, Pichai pointed to the strong operating margins despite the rise in AI capex, while reassuring, 'We'll be able to have a healthy ROI on our investments.' Alphabet's post-earnings price action might look at odds with its otherwise stellar earnings. However, the disconnect can be attributed to four main reasons. Firstly, the stock rallied heading into the Q2 confessional and is up 13.4% over the last month, which is the second highest among its 'Magnificent 7' peers, trailing only Nvidia (NVDA). Second, the increase in 2025 capex guidance by a whopping $10 billion to $85 billion did not sit well with the markets. Third, some market participants are still worried about the 'existential threat' to Google as the likes of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity challenge the status quo in search. Finally, there is the regulatory overhang as the U.S. Justice Department plans to break up Alphabet and force the company to divest its Chrome browser and Android operating system. It also wants the company to its end exclusive agreements with phone makers like Apple (AAPL) and Samsung. GOOG Stock Forecast After Q2 Earnings Sell-side analysts reacted positively to GOOG's Q2 earnings, and Oppenheimer, Pivotal Research, JPMorgan, and Raymond James were among the brokerages that raised the stock's target price following the report. Alphabet's Street-high target price of $250 implies potential upside of 29.4% over the next year. I believe GOOG stock has room to run higher given its tepid valuations. The stock trades at a forward price-earnings (P/E) multiple of just 20x, which is not only the lowest among its Big Tech peers, but also makes GOOG the only Magnificent 7 constituent that trades at a discount to the S&P 500 Index ($SPX). The depressed valuations are primarily due to the regulatory uncertainty, as well as concerns that the company might lose market share to AI chatbots like ChatGPT. However, Alphabet's Q2 earnings show that the company is yet to feel any meaningful impact from a flurry of competing products, and while these are still early days, so far Alphabet has handled the competition well. Alphabet also has services like Waymo, which will add long-term value, even as that business, which is part of its 'Other Bets' segment, is currently a drag on its profits, reporting an operating loss of $1.2 billion in Q2. Overall, despite the run-up over the last month, I find GOOG's risk-reward still attractive and believe that concerns over it losing out to AI rivals are a bit overblown. SHANGHAI — The tech race between the world's two largest economies just intensified. China on Saturday released a global action plan for artificial intelligence, calling for international cooperation on tech development and regulation. The news came as the annual state-organized World Artificial Intelligence Conference kicked off in Shanghai with an opening speech by Premier Li Qiang, who announced that the Chinese government has proposed the establishment of a global AI cooperation organization, according to an official readout. Days earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an American action plan for AI that included calls to reduce alleged "woke" bias in AI models and support the deployment of U.S. tech overseas. "The two camps are now being formed," said George Chen, partner at the Asia Group and co-chair of the digital practice. "China clearly wants to stick to the multilateral approach while the U.S. wants to build its own camp, very much targeting the rise of China in the field of AI," Chen said. He noted how China may attract participants from its Belt and Road Initiative, while the U.S. will likely have the support of its allies, such as Japan and Australia. In his speech, Premier Li emphasized China's "AI plus" plan for integrating the tech across industries and said the country was willing to help other nations with the technology, especially in the Global South. The category loosely refers to less developed economies, especially countries outside the U.S. and European orbits. Since 2022, the U.S. has sought to restrict China's access to advanced semiconductors for training AI models. Earlier this month, U.S. chipmaker Nvidia said the U.S. was allowing it to resume shipments of a less advanced H20 chip to China after a roughly three-month pause. However, China has been developing homegrown alternatives, which Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang both praised and described as "formidable" during his third trip to China this month. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt met with Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining on Thursday in the city ahead of the AI conference, according to a city announcement. My Pixel 9 Pro is removing all color and warmth from my photos, and I'm sick of it

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority I have long been a proponent of the Pixel camera. From my Pixel 2 XL to the 4 XL, 5, 6 Pro, 7 Pro, 8 Pro, and 9 Pro XL, I've used a Pixel as my personal phone and my primary camera since 2017, taking over 10,000 photos in the process. For years, my Pixel phone's camera was near flawless, at least compared to everything else on the market. It took clear, accurate, and well-detailed photos in every situation. Darkness or light, in movement or steady, up-close or far away, zoomed-in or ultrawide, it did everything I wanted it to. And I used it to capture stunning photos again, and again, and again. So when I say I'm getting sick and tired of this one issue with my Pixel 9 Pro XL's camera, you should know that I'm saying this out of love, not hate. And out of a growing frustration with the Pixel's propensity to suck every color and warm tone out of my pics in certain situations, leaving me with a bland, lifeless photo that is nothing like the real scene that my eyes are seeing. Let me show you some examples. Are you happy with your Pixel 9 Pro's photos? 0 votes Yes. I love the photos it takes! NaN % Kinda. Sometimes it gets things right, sometimes it fails. NaN % Not really. I was expecting so much more from this cam. NaN % Where the Pixel camera is failing me, repeatedly C. Scott Brown / Android Authority The Pixel camera's post-processing has leaned heavily towards desaturated, closer-to-reality photos for years now, and this was the reason many of us fell in love with it in the first place. We didn't want the over-saturated effect of Samsung's camera, or the over-processed nature of many other cams that were trying too hard to compensate for bad optics or bad processing algorithms. In its pursuit to capture the most balanced photo, though, Google has slowly left behind accuracy. Or reality, to be honest. I've been noticing this for years now, but my Pixel 9 Pro XL is the biggest culprit. I see it mostly in dark, warm environments. Cozy restaurants, dark airplanes, yellowish/reddish indoors. Anything that veers towards the warmer spectre of color is where my Pixel decides to even out the white balance no matter what, and thus strip all the color out of the photo. In its pursuit of the most balanced photo, Google has slowly left behind accuracy or reality. This is very obvious to me when I see pics captured with a Motion Photo. The short video is all warm and full of color; the still photo, in contrast, is cold and sometimes lifeless. Check out this photo of a Ratatouille plushie as an example. The entire still photo is better exposed, but it's also colder and less vibrant. Still from motion photo Final processed image If the example above is not that obvious, here are a couple more. The wooden sculpture shot is the most glaring example. I tend to snap pics of my husband in random cozy places, and most of those end up flatter than I ever thought they could. It's as if yellow, orange, and red hues are my Pixel 9 Pro's sworn enemy. It's so sad to see an interesting, lively, beautiful scene turn into a washed-out, over white-balanced snap time and again. It's so sad to see an interesting and lively scene turn into a cold, flat, and washed-out photo. Here's a screen recording showing the issue in action: I start with the cam viewfinder, tap to adjust white balance and exposure, take the photo, open it to see a good result that's similar to what I expected, then, when the 'Processing' is done, the final image is all flat and cold. And here's another screen recording in an underground theatre with lots of red lights. This one ends up way too dark, too, as a side effect of Ultra HDR being enabled (I'll get to this later). And one more. In this case, I didn't even tap to adjust white balance and exposure, to prove that my tap wasn't affecting the shot either. I'm sure we can all agree that the final result is literally nothing like what the original shot was supposed to be. And in every case, I confirm that what I was seeing with my own eyes was closer to the viewfinder preview, and nothing like what the final photo ended up like. Is it just Ultra HDR or…? After noticing this repeatedly happening, I decided to dig in and see if Ultra HDR was messing with these photos. Maybe Google's over-processing was being affected by this zealous HDR or by my phone's display and its ability to show Ultra HDR images. So I tested it again and again, trying the same photos with and without Ultra HDR. The result? It's not the culprit. Here's another screen recording where I snap a photo of my husband with Ultra HDR on, then go and disable it, and snap another photo. Both exhibit the same over-processing flatness and warmth-stripping symptoms that I've talked about earlier; Ultra HDR played no role in making that effect better or worse. And here are the two shots, side by side. Like here, Ultra HDR doesn't make a tangible difference in most cases. With Ultra HDR Without Ultra HDR So, what's the solution? Throughout all this testing, what has annoyed me the most — beyond the fact that my Pixel 9 Pro is stripping photos out of their vibrance and color — is the fact that it's not obeying the white balance and exposure preview. When I tap a specific part of the image to focus there and tell the camera to adjust its settings around this particular area, I expect the preview and end result to be similar. Instead, I see one thing on my screen and get a photo that has nothing to do with it. Google pipes the camera directly to the viewfinder but then applies heavy white balance, HDR, and color processing after you hit the shutter. With no indication of how that final picture will turn out, adjusting your settings via the viewfinder feels essentially useless. The only advantage to tapping on my subject is adjusting the plane of focus, nothing else. I see one thing on my screen, then get a photo that has nothing to do with it. Over the last few weeks, I've tried to adjust white balance before snapping the pic; it didn't do much. I tried editing the photo post-capture to add warmth, but it felt too artificial and unlike what the original shot should've been like, had my Pixel stuck with the viewfinder original colors and white balance. I wanted to try third-party camera apps, but there's still a lot I love about the Pixel Camera app and its processing in most situations that I don't want to give up on. I think the only real solution to this is an update from Google itself, either for the Pixel Camera app or the phone's entire firmware. Clearly, something has gone amiss with the phone's processing powers and it's not doing what it's supposed to do anymore, which is give us true-to-life shots. I haven't tested this on other Pixels, but several Redditors have confirmed this is also an issue on their Pixel 7 and 8 series, too. The ball's in your court, Google. You can't lose one of the biggest selling points of your phones.
