A paddleboarder was found dead at a Maine pond. Police believe someone killed her

Yahoo12-07-2025
(CNN) — On a warm summer evening earlier this month, Sunshine Stewart went paddleboarding on Crawford Pond, a peaceful, wooded expanse of water in Union, near coastal Maine.
When she didn't return hours later, someone reported her missing. Early the next morning, authorities said they found her body near 100 Acre Island, a nature preserve in the middle of the pond.
An autopsy later that day determined the 48-year-old woman's death was a homicide.
Nine days later, there have been no arrests. Maine State Police are warning the community to stay vigilant but have not divulged the cause of death or any details about the crime scene, leaving Stewart's family with questions and nearby residents with fears that a killer may be among them.
'I think it's just confusing because we don't know what happened, like, if this was an isolated incident or … a personal thing, like a grudge,' resident Gus Williams told CNN affiliate WMTW.
Williams, who lives near Crawford Pond, added, 'In a place where most people don't lock their doors, like, ever, it definitely feels … just intrusive and, I don't know, terrifying.'
Police say Stewart, known as 'Sunny,' left a campground on the north shore of the pond alone at about 6 p.m. on July 2 to go paddling. The 600-acre pond is surrounded by private property and is home to loons, smallmouth bass and other aquatic life.
Sheriff's deputies, firefighters and other law enforcement officials found her body sometime after 1 a.m. on July 3. They alerted the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit because of the 'circumstances' of the discovery, police said without going into further detail.
'The Maine State Police recognizes the fear and discomfort that this incident has brought to the town of Union and the Crawford Pond community,' police said in a statement. 'We understand the community's concerns and ask that residents continue to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.'
Detectives are reviewing forensic leads and information submitted through a tip line, police said.
Stewart was a resident of Tenants Harbor, a neighborhood in the town of St. George, on the Maine coast some 20 miles south of Crawford Pond.
Her sister, Kim Ware, described Stewart as an active woman and a boat captain who once sailed all the way to the Caribbean.
'Sunny loved the outdoors, hiking, boating, paddleboarding and yoga,' she told WMTW. 'To know Sunny is an amazing blessing. My sister and my best friend. The aunt that stepped up to help me raise her nephews,' Ware added.
'Anyone blessed to be in her presence was in awe of her, her strength, courage, character, her energy and light.'
Stewart had been through a lot but kept pushing forward, one of her friends, Sarah Vokey, told WMTW.
'Her life was not an easy one, but she strode through it with her head held high with that beaming all-encompassing smile on her face,' Vokey said. 'One of the many reasons I admired, loved, and appreciated her. One of the hardest things I have ever written was the text I sent to my son: 'Sunshine was murdered.''
Meanwhile, law enforcement remains tight-lipped about the evidence they have collected since Stewart's death.
'Additional information will be released when it becomes appropriate to do so based on the progress of the investigation,' state police said.
Investigators are asking anyone who saw Stewart paddling on the evening of July 2 near 100 Acre Island to reach out to the Maine State Police at 207-624-7076. Nearby residents with security cameras that may have captured relevant footage that night are also being urged to contact police.

13-year-old threatens man with flare gun, tries to steal van using a screwdriver, Delaware State Police say

A 13-year-old boy was arrested after trying to steal a Ford Transit van from the Harry O. Eisenberg Elementary School in New Castle, Delaware, on Tuesday. According to Delaware State Police, a 64-year-old man went out to his Ford Transit in the school parking lot just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, where he found 3-4 teens in the van. The man confronted the teens and ran after them once they tried to get away. The 13-year-old boy pointed an orange flare gun at the 64-year-old, who eventually caught up to him. State police said the boy then punched the man. State police took the 13-year-old into custody and recovered the flare gun. The boy is charged with attempting to commit theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, aggravated menacing, as well as other offenses, according to state police. Investigators later discovered the Ford van's driver's side door was damaged by the teens, and a screwdriver had been shoved into the ignition. "This type of damage is consistent with the nationwide trend of vehicles being stolen using a screwdriver," state police said in an announcement about the investigation. The 13-year-old was sent to the New Castle County Detention Center. The other teens were not found and have yet to be identified. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Corporal W. Beinke at Troop 2 by calling (302) 834-2620.

14-year-old boy identified as victim in University of New Mexico dorm shooting

A shooting inside a dorm room at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque early Friday morning left a 14-year-old boy dead and another teen wounded, state police said. The suspect in the shooting, identified by police as 18-year-old John Fuentes, was taken into custody hours after the shooting during a traffic stop in Los Lunas, New Mexico, about 25 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico State Police said during a news conference Friday evening. Fuentes has been booked on one count of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence. An initial investigation indicates that four young people were inside a dorm room at Mesa Vista Hall playing video games when the violence broke out, according to State Police. "At some point, for reasons still being investigated, the suspect began shooting a firearm at the other occupants in the room. The 14-year-old victim was fatally shot while the other occupants, along with the suspect, fled from the room," State Police said in a statement Saturday. The other person who was wounded in the shooting is 19, according to police, and had injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, the university said earlier. University of New Mexico Police officers responded to an alarm call at the dorm at around 1:30 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found broken windows and suspected blood, according to New Mexico State Police. University police then received two more calls reporting gunshots and a second from UNMH that a 19-year-old male came in with a gunshot wound and said he had been shot at UNM campus, according to state police. While conducting a sweep of the surrounding buildings, officers found a 14-year-old dead, state police said. Fuentes remains in state police custody. Authorities said he will be booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center in Bernalillo County. The university initially issued a shelter-in-place, which lasted much of the day. By Friday afternoon local time, the university said there was "still an active crime scene" in the central part of the campus, but that the shelter-in-place order had been lifted. The central campus remained closed, the university said. New Mexico State Rep. Marianna Anaya said new student orientation was underway this week. "Waking this morning to the news of this act of violence has shaken the entire UNM community," she said in a statement. "It is especially heartbreaking that this occurred during the time of a new student orientation -- a time when students and their families should be filled with hope, excitement, and a sense of possibility." She added, "This heartbreaking incident is yet another reminder of the urgent need to address gun violence and historical trauma in our state."
