Asia Cup 2025: Hong Kong Name Kaushal Silva As Head Coach

News185 days ago
Hong Kong's most recent appearance was at the Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy in Singapore, where they finished runners-up.
Kaushal Silva, a former Sri Lanka Test cricketer, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Hong Kong men's cricket team. His appointment comes at an opportune moment as Hong Kong prepare for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup. They will kick off the tournament against Afghanistan on September 9, followed by group-stage matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Group B.
Silva brings extensive experience to his new role. Between 2011 and 2018, he played 39 Tests for Sri Lanka, establishing himself as a dedicated wicketkeeper-opener. In his first-class career, he accumulated 13,932 runs in 209 matches, including 41 centuries, three of which were at the international level. Since his retirement in 2019, Silva has been coaching in Sri Lanka, England, and Australia. This marks his first appointment as the head coach of an international team.
Burji Shroff, chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong, China, expressed confidence in Silva's appointment, saying that Kaushal's dedication to nurturing and developing talent aligns with their vision for the future of cricket in Hong Kong. They believe that under his leadership, the team can enhance its competitive standing and promote the sport within the community.
Silva stated that his focus will be on instilling a strong work ethic and a winning mentality in the senior squad, as well as identifying and nurturing new talent for continued growth.
Hong Kong's most recent appearance was at the Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy in Singapore, where they finished as runners-up after losing to Malaysia in the final. With Silva now at the helm, the team aims to build on that performance and make a significant impact in the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE.

Bumrah released from squad: Will he play Asia Cup or next lot of Tests in India?

London/New Delhi: Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was on Friday released from the national squad after completing his quota of three Tests in the five-match series against England and stakeholders in Indian cricket have already started discussing his next international assignment. The 31-year-old Bumrah bowled 119.4 overs across three games and took 14 wickets. However at Manchester, Bumrah conceded more than 100 runs in a single innings for the first time in his career. Live Events Bumrah now has 219 wickets in 48 Tests. Prior to India's departure, chairman of selection committee Ajit Agarkar had confirmed that the pace ace won't play more than three Tests keeping his workload management in mind. Which format will Bumrah feature next? India's next international assignment is Asia Cup T20 tournament and it would be a surprise if Bumrah opts to play the tournament considering that the next Test series against West Indies will start in less than a week's time after the event in the UAE. The Asia Cup will conclude on September 29 and the first Test against the West Indies will start in Ahmedabad on October 2 followed by the second match in New Delhi from October 10-14 . Then in November there are two Tests against South Africa. "It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup," a BCCI source abreast with Indian selection process told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies or he plays Asia Cup after a month's break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take," the source added. Bumrah is not expected to play many ODIs till the T20 World Cup at home.

Matt Henry Stars As New Zealand Crush Zimbabwe By Nine Wickets In 1st Test

New Zealand stamped their authority over Zimbabwe with a dominant performance in the first Test of the two-match series at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, wrapping up the match in just two-and-a-half days to secure a comprehensive nine-wicket win. The Black Caps now lead 1-0 in the series, which is not part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. The victory was set up by New Zealand's relentless pace attack, spearheaded by Matt Henry, who returned match figures of 9 wickets, including a stunning 6 for 39 on the opening day. Zimbabwe were bundled out for 149 in their first innings and failed to recover from the early damage, eventually folding for 165 in the second, despite some resistance from Sean Williams and Tafadzwa Tsiga. New Zealand batted solidly in response to Zimbabwe's first innings, building a commanding lead of 158 runs. Devon Conway (88) and Daryl Mitchell (80) led the charge, helping the visitors post 307. While Zimbabwe's bowlers toiled hard, they lacked the sting to restrict the South African batters for long periods. Zimbabwe began their second innings on Day 3 with hopes of putting up a more resilient fight. However, their innings followed a familiar pattern, with Will O'Rourke (3 for 28) and Mitchell Santner (4 for 27) exploiting the fragile middle and lower order. Sean Williams top-scored with a gritty 49, while Tafadzwa Tsiga, who had impressed in the first innings with a career-best 30, added 27 more runs. But Zimbabwe's total of 165 was never going to be enough to force a contest. New Zealand chased down the target of just eight runs in 14 deliveries, losing Devon Conway in the first over but eventually sealing the match with nine wickets in hand. Zimbabwe's batting frailties were once again exposed. Despite a blend of young players and seasoned campaigners, they failed to post significant partnerships. The only Test win for Zimbabwe this year came in Chattogram against Bangladesh, and the side has now suffered five consecutive Test losses, with home performances continuing to raise concern. South Africa, meanwhile, will be buoyed by their clinical showing. With Matt Henry leading the charge, they will go into the second Test with confidence and momentum on their side. The second and final Test of the series begins on August 7 at the same venue. Brief scores: Zimbabwe 149 & 165 all out in67/1 overs (Sean Williams 49; Mitchell Santner 4-27, William O'Rourke 3-28, Matt Henry 3-51) lost to New Zealand 307 all out (Devon Conway 88, Daryl Mitchell 80; Blessing Muzarabani 3-73) & 8/1 in 2.2 overs (Henry Nicholls 4 not out) by nine wickets. --IANS

McLaren's Rise Faster Than Ferrari's Schumacher Era: Andrea Stella's Bold Claim

Last Updated: McLaren leads the constructors' championship by 268 points, while both their drivers, Piastri and Norris, are vying for the drivers' title. McLaren's recent transformation has been so rapid and effective that its current trajectory may even outpace the legendary Ferrari era under Michael Schumacher, according to team principal Andrea Stella. Speaking on Friday ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Stella reflected on his past with Ferrari and expressed astonishment at the scale and speed of McLaren's resurgence. The Italian, who served as an engineer at Ferrari during Schumacher's dominance in the early 2000s, now leads a McLaren team that is dominating both the drivers' and constructors' championships in 2025. Stella, who joined McLaren in 2015 after more than a decade at Ferrari, emphasized that drawing direct comparisons between eras and teams can be tricky, particularly given his different roles in each organization. However, he admitted that McLaren's current rate of development stands out. 'It's always difficult to compare across seasons," Stella said. 'In this case, we are comparing across teams, and even myself, I was in a very different role, so my field of view, my perspective was very different." During Schumacher's golden run from 2000 to 2004, Ferrari secured five consecutive drivers' titles and six consecutive constructors' championships, with the 2004 season being especially dominant—15 wins from 18 races. McLaren's Dominance in 2025 In stark contrast to their recent struggles, McLaren has surged to the front of the grid in 2025. After finishing fifth in 2022 and fourth in 2023, the team has won 10 of the first 13 races this season and holds a commanding 268-point lead over second-placed Ferrari in the constructors' standings. Their driver duo—Oscar Piastri of Australia and Britain's Lando Norris—are currently locked in a close fight for the drivers' title. Piastri leads Norris by 16 points, while Max Verstappen, the reigning champion and Red Bull ace, trails by a distant 81 points in third place. Despite the commanding lead and consistent performance from his drivers, Stella is unwilling to label the championship battle as a closed contest. 'Definitely not," Stella said when asked about whether Verstappen was out of the Championship race. 'I only agree with mathematics. So once mathematics tells us that's the case, then I'll change my answer." First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
