What is it? A scene-y Sunset Strip steakhouse with satellite locations in Santa Monica and Manhattan Beach.
Why we love it: With its sultry interior design, reasonable prices (for a glitzy steakhouse, that is) and a commitment to consistency and high-touch service, it's no surprise that BOA has stuck around for over two decades. These days, executive chef Brendan Collins—formerly of Fia in Santa Monica—has refreshed the menu with a slate of new seafood items, including caviar-topped spicy tuna cones, tartare served on a bed of dry ice and a knockout lobster pasta spiced up with Calabrian chili. Signature dishes, such as the Wagyu meatball and classics like truffle mac-n-cheese, deliver the sort of familiar, craveable comfort that explains why BOA holds such wide appeal: The restaurant is just as popular among Gen Z influencers and starry-eyed tourists as it is among BOA's regular, typically older clientele of professionals and Hollywood power brokers. For a more subdued but still sultry vibe, try their more relaxed beachside outposts, both of which are perfect for an oceanside dinner date.
Time Out tip: A newly added Wagyu flight lets you sample two ounces of meat from three different Japanese prefectures.

Ellen DeGeneres mocked over 'monstrosity' home in UK after melodramatic move to avoid Trump

Ellen DeGeneres has been mercilessly mocked over her new-build home in the English countryside, with furious Brits labelling the mansion a 'monstrosity'. The former talk show host and her partner Portia De Rossi, 52, moved into the hilltop home in Oxfordshire less than a year after swapping the US for the UK to avoid living under the Trump administration. The couple is thought to have moved into the modern home following a series of disasters including flooding at their previous abode, a $20 million (£15 million) Cotswolds farmhouse, which DeGeneres said is now on the market. But the 'beautiful, old' stone farmhouse is a far cry from the glass-fronted house the couple now calls home - with pictures of the couple's new house dividing opinion. Steve Loftus, a businessman and utility industry expert, described the futuristic home as 'a concrete and glass monstrosity.' Other X users likened the house to a 'remodeled community college', a 'factory' and a 'water treatment plant in Arizona circa 1976.' 'The inside of Ellen DeGeneres' home in the Cotswolds is totally devoid of any personality,' said another person, who added: 'It looks like a prison.' The sprawling single-storey house was built by a UK-based developer which described by it as an attempt to 'redefine rural modern living'. 'The inside of Ellen DeGeneres' home in the Cotswolds is totally devoid of any personality,' said one internet critic The couple is thought to have moved into the modern home following a series of disasters including flooding at their previous home The architect specializes in restoring industrial buildings, with the property unrecognizable from the ramshackle farmyard which previously stood on the site. The farmhouse stood empty for many years before it was finally sold as a derelict building only fit for redevelopment to the developer for almost £2million. Planning permission was granted to demolish the farmhouse and erect a 'replacement dwelling' and for the surrounding site to be landscaped. The cost of the home is unknown but reports suggest the TV personality could have bought it for anywhere between $20 million and $27 million. It is made up of five bedrooms and is built around a Japanese style courtyard garden in the centre. Pictures of the interior show a double height living room with exposed beams and minimalistic stone and wooden furnishings. The hilltop position and huge glass windows mean it boats panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. For privacy, the home is said to be set in 100 acres of unspoiled grounds, which the couple have used to keep their small flock of sheep and chickens. It is about a 30-minute drive from their original home and planning documents show it has a 'sustainable drainage system' and is not 'at risk of flooding'. DeGeneres and her wife moved to the Cotswolds last year in the hope that it would be the perfect place to avoid living under the Trump administration A Cotswolds property expert previously told the Mail that 'It's plain that Ellen and Portia love [the house]. 'Everything has been done very discreetly so it's not clear what the terms of the deal was but it seems that it has recently changed hands for not much less than they paid for their previous place. 'To buy two properties for eight figure sums in the space of a few months really is unusual, even given the many multi-millionaires around here.' Vice President JD Vance is set to travel to the idyllic rural area DeGeneres calls home next month, alongside his wife Usha, 39, and their three children next month. The news of his holiday is unlikely to go down well with DeGeneres, who revealed only last week that she had decided to stay in the UK 'for good' because of Trump's re-election. DeGeneres yesterday told an audience pf 700 fans in the Cotswolds that life is 'just better' in the UK and the US election outcome swayed her decision to move. 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, "He got in" - and we're like, "We're staying here".' The couple had initially planned to spend a few months a year in the UK, buying and moving into what DeGeneres called a 'part-time house' in November 2024 before deciding to stay. DeGeneres is a well-known collector of 'multi-million dollar homes', according to People, including a $32 million (£24 million) property in Montecito where Prince Harry and Meghan live. In 2023, she revealed that she had bought and sold 'over 50 houses' including one property in Malibu which was previously owned by Brad Pitt. Earlier this year, it was reported that she had put two homes in Montecito on the market which are thought to be among her last remaining properties in California.

The average Nintendo fan is around 30 years old according to new data

A new survey breaks down the average age and gender of fans of popular gaming franchises like Pokémon and Final Fantasy. Compared to Sony and Microsoft, whose priorities lie in appealing primarily to adult gamers, Nintendo has long benefited from catering to the whole family. The Nintendo Switch 2's initial line-up perfectly demonstrates this, with Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza being simple, easy to understand experiences for kids yet offering enough depth to appeal to adults. And yet according to new research on average age and gender ratios for popular video games, it appears the average Nintendo fan is in their 30s, while online live service games are where theyounger audiences are. The research was conducted by GEM Partners and Nikkei Entertainment, which surveyed 30,000 people across the ages of 15 to 69, and has been handily compiled and translated over on the ResetEra forums. While it focuses solely on the Japanese market, there are still some interesting takeaways regarding the more globally recognised gaming franchises. Nintendo franchises appear to skew more towards older audiences. The average age of players of the Super Mario, Kirby, and Pokémon games falls between 30 and 32, with The Legend Of Zelda and Animal Crossing sharing an average player age of 35. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The one exception is the Splatoon series, where the average player is aged 27. Perhaps this is a result of Splatoon being much newer, with the first game only coming out in 2015, whereas the other franchises are over 20 or 30 years old and thus more appealing to older, nostalgic fans who grew up playing the original games. Japanese outlet Kultur reports that the average age of gamers is around 30 years old, so Nintendo does appear to have cracked the code of ensuring its most popular franchises are appealing to the most common demographic. Intriguingly, these Nintendo franchises have a near even split in terms of gender ratio. Pokémon and Zelda have a male to female ratio of 60:40, while Splatoon's is 65:35. Super Mario's audience is mostly male at 70:30 but Kirby, and especially Animal Crossing, are more popular with female players, with ratios of 45:55 and 25:75, respectively. Elsewhere, the data shows that the average age of players of live service shooters such as Valorant, Apex Legends, and Fortnite are in their 20s. All three examples also have the same gender ratio of 85:15, with very male dominated player-bases. On the opposite end, you have Square Enix's Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises, which still skew heavily towards male players but have an average player age of 42. Both franchises are long-running role-players that have been around since the 80s, so it makes sense for their core audiences to be older people who've been playing them since the early days. More Trending However, it also shows that both franchises have struggled to make themselves appealing to younger audiences. In Final Fantasy's case, this could be a contributing factor as to why both Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth underperformed in terms of sales. Of course, this doesn't necessarily reflect the gaming habits of the Western market. Mobile gaming, for instance, is even more popular in Japan than it is here, as evidenced by how prominent mobile games are in the collected data. It also demonstrates how console gaming is being predominantly held up by the older generations, with console franchises like Resident Evil and Like A Dragon having average player ages in the late 30s while mobile games like Brawl Stars and Project Sekai have average player ages of 18 and 22, respectively. This can be attributed to how mobile games are typically free-to-play and thus there's less of a barrier of entry for kids, teenagers, and unemployed or underpaid young adults. What happened to Sylvanian Drama on TikTok? The legal fight over controversial viral clips explained

Social media account has frequently gone viral for its darkly comedic skits featuring Calico Critters TOY BATTLE What happened to Sylvanian Drama on TikTok? The legal fight over controversial viral clips explained Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A VIRAL TikTok account that featured toys getting drunk, doing drugs and committing violence is reportedly at the centre of a legal battle. Sylvanian Drama, launched by Irish content creator Thea Von Engelbrechten, is being sued by Japanese company Epoch. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Epoch is suing Sylvanian Drama for infringing its copyright The social media account, which has frequently gone viral for its darkly comedic skits featuring the small toys, mysteriously went quiet this year after it landed in legal hot water with the toys' maker. It is now being reported that Sylvanian Drama, which has 2.5 million followers on TikTok and 1 million on Instagram, is being sued for copyright infringement, trademark infringement and unfair competition. Why is the lawsuit only being reported now? Epoch's lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on April 7, initially went unnoticed but drew attention last week when some outlets reported on the situation. It came after reporters noticed months of silence from the account. The lawsuit, first reported by The Irish Independent, added that the site also uses a copyrighted image as Sylvanian Drama's social media profile picture. CCTV captures moment toy-loving boy crawls into claw machine The company claims that Thea Von Engelbrechten has been 'doubling her efforts to exploit Epoch's copyrights and trademarks for her own commercial gain' despite the company's attempts to work the issue out amicably. Sylvanian Families, also known as Calico Critters in the United States and Canada, are felt dolls in the shape of cute, anthropomorphized animals. They were first released in Japan in 1985. How did Sylvanian Drama become so popular? The creatures range from bunnies and kittens to squirrels and more, all with wide, black eyes and tiny clothing. The videos on Sylvanian Drama, all of which feature Calico Critters, often rack up millions of views each. Von Engelbrechten began posting Sylvanian Drama videos in 2021, when she was a 19-year-old multimedia student at Dublin City University. She told The Tab in a 2023 interview that her videos were meant to parody shows like 'Gossip Girl' and 'Pretty Little Liars.' 'I'm always surprised that I'm not already canceled for the stuff that I do,' she said. 'I don't mean any harm and also … a lot of the issues that I joke about are problems in my own life. 'There's a lot of stuff about weight and dieting and people struggling with that, and that's all just me joking about myself. So I'm not making fun of anyone.' Inspiration for content As reported by the BBC, the court document states that in an interview with influencer marketing company Fohr, Von Engelbrechten said her inspiration for the storylines came from "cringey TV shows and early 2000s comedy". She added: "I'm also really inspired by my cats because they are extremely sassy and self-obsessed and can be so cute, but they also have no morals when it comes to killing other animals. 'I try to embody that with the Sylvanians." Asked why she thought her videos were so popular she told Fohr: "Maybe it's because it's coming from the voice of a 22-year-old who struggles with the same things as [they do]. 'I have a lot of storylines about insecure people, diet culture, toxic men, and sustainability, which I think other girls my age are also thinking a lot about." Do you have a Sylvanian Families toy worth up to £500 in your house? Anyone who grew up in the 80s will remember the cute Sylvanian Families toys - and some could now fetch you a pretty penny on eBay. The furry animals come in neat family sets (mum and dad, son and daughter), all with old-fashioned outfits, jobs and homes. The cute characters were first introduced in the UK back in 1985, after being designed by Japanese firm Epoch. And it seems like the older and rarer your models, the more they might now be worth online. Last year, a collector sold a rare Japanese doll from 2003 for a whopping £500 - almost five times its auction start price of £99. Another vintage Sylvanian teddy bear from the 1980s sold for £456. A date has been set for August 14 for a pre-trial conference. This is when legal teams from both sides will meet to explore settlement options or prepare the case for trial. Von Engelbrechten and Epoch have yet to respond to press requests for comment.
